Satisfactory Sells 1.3 Million Copies; Steam vs Epic Games Store Breakdown

PCGamesN reports that Satisfactory has now sold in excess of one million copies. They also have a breakdown from Coffee Stain Studios comparing how the building game is selling on Steam versus the Epic Games Store. Having started as an EGS exclusive, it has still sold more copies there, but Steam is catching up. They have some quotes from the developer explaining why:
Satisfactory has sold 1,326,518 copies in total as of today, July 3. 958,917 of those sales have been on Epic, and the remaining 367,601 sales have come through Steam. Epic reached the 500k mark just under three months after launch, and Steam has reached 367k in under a month, so the game is certainly selling faster on Valve’s platform.

Community manager Jace Varlet attributes the speedier sales on Steam to a few main factors. First, “obviously, Steam is a goliath, so there’s just so many more people there. That’s gonna weigh into things.” Second, Coffee Stain’s take on building games has also enjoyed extra promotion with a 10% discount as part of the Steam Summer Sale – the first discount on Epic happened early, but not within the first month.

“Having said that, in my opinion, I think Steam is gonna overtake it. There’s just more people.”

Varlet adds that there are “other things to consider: Satisfactory is a better game now. There’s more features. It’s had one more year of exposure.”

Beyond a Steel Sky This Month

The Steam Listing for Beyond a Steel Sky now shows a July 16th release date for Revolution Software's sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky (thanks Gematsu). Here's a refresher on this sci-fi action/adventure:
From Charles Cecil, creator of the Broken Sword series, with art direction by Dave Gibbons, legendary comic book artist behind ‘Watchmen’, comes ‘Beyond A Steel Sky’, the long awaited sequel to the cult classic ‘Beneath a Steel Sky’.

You are Robert Foster. A child has been abducted in a brutal attack. You have vowed to bring him home. The trail has led you to Union City, one of the last remaining mega-cities in a world ravaged by shattering wars, and political meltdown.

Union City is a utopia, its people loving life under the control of an altruistic AI: ever-attentive androids, designer living, piazzas and bars. What’s not to love? But this City has a dark underbelly...

‘Beyond a Steel Sky’ is a dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller in which engaging puzzles drive a fast-paced narrative set in a dynamic gameworld that responds to – and is subverted by – the player’s actions.

Op Ed

  • GamesIndustry.biz - Amazon and Google are in games for the wrong reasons - Opinion.
"The problem is that that's not a reason to make games; it's an end that they think games could fulfil. The games themselves are just a means to that end, which makes it entirely unsurprising when the games and services birthed from that philosophy aren't actually appealing or interesting to consumers. They're not designed from the outset to appeal to consumers; they're designed to connect a few things together in a corporate planning flowchart."

Tencent Opens US Studio

This week Tencent Holdings launched a new U.S. game studio in California called LightSpeed LA, reports Reuters. They say the Chinese giant is looking to create AAA games and enhance their for global appeal. Word is the studio is being headed up by Steve Martin, a Rockstar veteran who's a wild and crazy guy:
The new studio, LightSpeed LA, will be led by former Rockstar veteran Steve Martin and will focus on the development and publishing of AAA titles, Tencent Games’ LightSpeed and Quantum Studios said in a statement to Reuters.

“We’re ushering in a new era of game culture by combining world-class development with a stress-free work environment,” Martin said in the statement.

The launch is also the firm’s latest move in a strategy to derive half its games revenue from overseas, a category that accounted for about 23% of its fourth-quarter online game sales.

The Settlers Reboot Delayed

A post to The Settlers Alliance (which triggered an insecure site warning on our end) says that Ubisoft will not settle for a sub-par installment in The Settlers series, so they are delaying the release of their The Settlers reboot (thanks Neowin). This was expected this year, but now the game's launch date is up in the air:
There are so many “The Settlers” fans out there who love the many different aspects of the game. Be it the economic part, the military, the look and feel, the “wuselfaktor” or the inviting world – to name a few. We are incredibly grateful for your feedback, and over the last few months, while performing playtests and diary studies, one thing became clear: while we are on the right path to deliver a great game, we really want to deliver an exceptional gaming experience.

Since quality is our main priority, we want to take the time necessary to make it right. Therefore, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone the release of the game until further notice. The additional time will be used to address your feedback and deliver the best “The Settlers” game possible. While we cannot provide a new release date yet, rest assured we will keep you updated via The Settlers Alliance and our other channels as soon as we can give you further information.

Slitherine Turns 20

Slitherine Software is celebrating their 20th anniversary, as Wikipedia states this developer was founded by Iain McNeil in the UK on June 25, 2000 (the first mention of them here was a year later when they announced development of Legion). There's a letter to mark the occasion and thank fans on the Slitherine Forums. Here's word:
There is no fast forward to now because this is the time for us to stop and thank every single fan, player, partner, and colleague that we met along the way. We are lucky enough to have survived twenty years of videogames, which is an achievement on its own. Keeping to our original mission to create games that would appeal to wargamers, we very seldom drifted away from that track and never by much. We keep making strategy wargames that are deep and have a soul; we keep trying to find new fans with our roots running deep in our history’s soil.

The whole idea of Slitherine started with a dinosaur’s game for Game Boy, would you believe. It was the prehistory of videogames when things were so different and so much the same. Working from home was a necessity of a different kind, and business was a different kind of tough. Our quarterly meetings of five of us in JD’s war room were the only chances to talk and shake hands and see each other: three pizzas were more than enough to feed the whole company for lunch. They are not even sufficient for the PR department now.

In these twenty years, we faced challenges, we built solid foundations and almost saw them crumble, we made bad choices, and we made great ones. We found real friends and made some rivals. We launched good products and even terrible ones. When things got tough, we grew up and rose to the next level.

Tennis World Tour 2 in September

Publisher NACON and developer Big Ant Studios announce September is when they will serve Tennis World Tour 2 for Windows and consoles. They court us with a Gameplay Reveal Trailer offering a first look at this in action, showing off a new engine and new features. Here's the game's Steam Listing and here's word:
In Tennis World Tour 2, fans can experience a realistic tennis game that captures all the sport's unique characteristics and competitiveness. Using feedback from a fan community comprising some 700,000 gamers, many aspects of the game have been redesigned from the ground up. This includes faster gameplay that puts players' skills and nerves to the test. More animations have also been added, which improves the game's realism and fluidity.

Big Ant studio also wanted to offer more diverse content for this new game in the series by adding doubles tennis and a new competition that tennis players will be very familiar with: Tie Break Tens. This format consists of short matches where the winner is the first to reach 10 points, ideal for when you want to play intense matches and a quick series of games.
