Gears Tactics PC Specs and Details

Xbox Wire has word on Microsoft's collaboration with Intel to optimize the upcoming release of Gears Tactics for PC. They offer this image with system recommendations, including specifications for playing on a laptop, which is unusual. All four sets of specs list Windows 10 as a minimum OS, which is also what it says on the game's Steam Listing. Here's word on the Windows edition:
While previous Gears games started with the console as a fixed reference point, the development teams at The Coalition and Splash Damage had to consider an incredibly wide range of processors for Gears Tactics. Not only did the game have to live up to series expectations as a graphics showcase, it had to seamlessly scale across thin and light notebooks, ultra-powerful desktops and device configurations yet-to-come, including those featuring the Xe graphics architecture debuting this year.

Throughout the development of Gears Tactics, The Coalition worked with Intel and the Xe-LP architecture to optimize the game. New to Gears on PC is support for Variable Rate Shading (VRS). Async Compute capabilities have been improved, and content has been built to scale across a wide range of devices. VRS, a relatively new technique, reduces the pixel complexity of a scene to effectively give Gears Tactics a performance boost without sacrificing visual fidelity. Async Compute allows for certain graphics workloads to be run in parallel, allowing the game to perform more back-end graphics processes to keep your session running smooth. And with new Intel hardware compatibility, that translates to fantastic performance across the upcoming Intel Xe architecture.

In short, Gears Tactics will look amazing on high-end PCs and runs perfectly on laptops and lower-spec machines to help bring the franchise to a broad new audience of PC gamers. You can see this represented across the official hardware spec requirements outlined below:

Steamworks Winter Recap

A new Steamworks Winter Recap takes a look back at what Valve did on Steam during the season to support developers and publishers on their platform. They discuss the overhaul in how they present soundtracks, a recap of the various Steam Labs Experiments they launched, and talk about developer tools and the new virtual game festival they introduced. They cap off the update with the following note about developer support in the days of COVID-19:
Like most other businesses in the US and across the world, our staff has switched to working from home. This presents some new challenges for our teams that provide important Steam services like moderation, customer support, and reviewing builds and store pages. Our goal is to minimize the impact on partners and players, but we appreciate your patience in the event of any delays. We hope that Steamworks partners worldwide are able to stay safe and healthy during this difficult time.

More About Playing Half-Life Alyx Without VR

A new video from the Valve News Network follows up on the brief clip from the other day showing Half-Life: Alyx played on a flat monitor without VR. In this we learn the details on how this was done. The good news is that it didn't involve any external modding, but the bad news is that it utilized a test version of the game that's no longer available anywhere to the public. It also explains why a non-VR mod for the game will be a novelty, but ultimately will not be fun to play. Continue here to read the full story.

Shapik: The Moon Quest Next Month

Shapik: The Moon Quest is a point-and-click adventure game with a word-free narrative coming to Steam on April 22nd. Developer Paul Podberezko offers How one can become old and castaway by the example of developing a quest, an article about the creation of this game, starting with its predecessor. It's an interesting tale of the ups and downs of getting one's start as an indie developer and it includes links to playable demos for the Windows and macOS editions of the game. Here's the description:
SHAPIK: The Moon Quest is a handmade quest. The story is told without a single word - but with the help of most beautiful animations and enchanting music.

Graphics:
Background and characters are drawn by hand. The game’s animation took hours of detailed work.

Fewer words:
You won’t find a single long and boring dialogue - all the characters communicate with each other with animated “thought clouds”.

Music:
Our composer wrote the original score for the game just so you can feel all the tension of this story and get goosebumps during nerve-wracking moments.

Morning Patches

Out of the Blue

Happy birthday Neutronbeam, who has given us all the gift of interesting link submissions for many years now. I know he's expressed an interest in one of the new Aston Martins if anyone's looking for a gift idea. He also mentioned his preferred colors, but I imagine he'd take any of them.

The reaction to yesterday's new links format was mixed. Most found them more readable, especially on mobile. But many of you expressed concern about all that extra spacing. Frans pointed out some changes I could make to the style that may give us the best of both worlds. So here's take two on a reformatted list link. Again feedback is encouraged.

New Link Format, Take II
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
