Game Developers Conference Postponed Due to Coronavirus

An Important GDC 2020 Update announces that the 2020 Game Developers Conference is being postponed due to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus. Word is they plan to reschedule the trade show to an unspecified time this summer:
After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

Arrest of a Stone Buddha Released

Arrest of a Stone Buddha is now available on Steam, offering a side-scrolling action/RPG for Windows promising "a unique ‘70s film noir atmosphere." This is shown off in this trailer which features pixel-art graphics and lots of shooting. Here's word:
As a professional killer you'll live through November 1976 alternating non-stop shoot'em up action with a downtempo mundane life.

You're fast and lucky enough so you don't plan your actions too far. You kill with one shot and you never miss. When you're run out of ammo you just throw a gun away. You can disarm any enemy and use any weapon. And when it's time to get out you just use a vehicle nearby.

You have an apartment in the historical center of the city. When you want to eat you go to a cafe, and you can visit a museum or a cinema when you're looking for entertainment. And you have a lover when you need a woman.

And there's this question which is longing for an answer.

Op Ed

  • The Outline: I don’t wanna do my video game chores. Thanks Pocket via Yiddish.
"In RDR2, though, the incentive system is deeply flawed. Completing missions gives the player way too much money, so the resources never really feel scarce or “earned.” Other in-game tasks are pointless, and don’t give the player anything significant upon completion. If Arthur doesn’t bathe for a while, for example, he’s eventually forced to by Miss Grimshaw, a non-playable character in his camp. You’re then treated to a slow cutscene of Arthur washing his face (sorry, no shots of his naked ass/schlong). The only reward is the ability to continue playing the game. It’s like any other annoying chore you have to do in real life, without any material benefit, all for the sake of gratuitous realism. As more of these chores stack up, nihilism sets in. Why do anything?"

Out of the Blue

Happy Leap Day! How do you plan on using your "extra" day? I plan on seeing a Knicks game with my friends. Stay at home most of the time and then going to a sports arena during fears of a global virus outbreak? I'm not sure I'm thinking this through properly. But one of my buddies scored some free tickets (the only reason to watch a team as terrible as the Knicks), and I never pass up a chance to hang with my crew.
