Evening Interviews

Op Ed

  • - Can Alyx pull VR out of its niche?
"However, it's still important to bear in mind that this remains a tiny, niche market relative to the console, PC or mobile device markets. Even for the best-selling VR headsets, a stellar quarter globally pales in comparison to the weekly sales of something like Switch or PS4 in a single decently performing territory, let alone the gigantic figures posted week after week for devices like the iPhone. I point this out not to bash the VR market, but because it's a reality; VR remains a niche within a niche, and that's a big part of the commercial equation developers and publishers have to grapple with when deciding where it sits in their plans."

The Archetype Entertainment Website is now online, unveiling details on this new game studio formed by Wizards of the Coast (thanks Polygon). This being headed up by designer James Ohlen, whose partnership with the Dungeons Dragons and Magic: The Gathering publisher was revealed last April. James is joined by fellow BioWare veteran Chad Robertson, who will serve as General Manager. Here is the new studio's mission statement saying their first project is a sci-fi RPG:
Archetype Entertainment is a game development studio in Austin, Texas led by industry veterans from BioWare and other AAA studios. Founded in 2019, Archetype is an autonomous division of Wizards of the Coast. We are assembling a world-class team to build a multi-platform roleplaying game set in a new science fiction universe.

At Archetype, we believe there will always be a place for story-driven roleplaying games that put the player at the center of an epic personal narrative with impactful choices. We are building games that represent the diversity of our audience. We also believe that game studios should empower top developers and challenge them with ambitious projects that are shaped by a strong, clearly communicated creative vision.

Out of the Blue

You may have noticed the Amazon banners we used to have are now missing. Yup, we were thrown out of their affiliate program again. This time the reason was: "Purchases resulting from Special Links on your Site have been for personal use, resale, or commercial use, or have been made by your friends, relatives, employees, contractors, or business relations." I told them that I am 100% baffled by how this could be the case, but they were unimpressed, and denied by appeal without further explanation. This is not the only surprising such penalty the site has suffered lately, as we also had our YouTube channel deleted by Google last year. It was explained this was due to a copyright complaint from a rights holder, I pointed out that 100% of the videos there were submitted by the publishers or developers of the games they promoted, and did not even receive a response. As someone who strives to color inside the lines at all times on an internet rife with sleazebags, scammers, and liars, these are very frustrating developments. But it does not seem there is anything else I can do about them. Oh well.
