Ubisoft Calls Out Breakpoint & Delays Games

Ubisoft has released a statement in advance of the release of their latest financial results adjusting their projections downward and revealing a couple of delays. The delays are to Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Watch_Dogs Legion, saying these will all now be released in fiscal 2020-21. As for the financial shortfall, they directly blame the performance of Ghost Recon Breakpoint and The Division 2. Here's word:
However, we have not capitalized on the potential of our latest two AAA releases. For Ghost Recon Breakpoint, while the game’s quality appeared on track – based on E3, Gamescom, previews and our latest internal playtests –, critical reception and sales during the game’s first weeks were very disappointing. As we have done with past titles, we will continue to support the game and listen to the community in order to deliver the necessary improvements.

At this stage, we have identified three main reasons behind this underperformance:

  • First, it is harder to generate interest for a sequel to a Live multiplayer game, when prior iterations benefited from years of optimization. Consequently, we need to make sure there is more time between each iteration of Live games.
  • Second, our strategy of introducing gameplay innovations in our games has had a very positive impact on our brands. However, to win over players, these innovations need to be perfectly implemented in order to offer an optimal experience. This has not yet been sufficiently the case with Ghost Recon Breakpoint. While the change of formula has been very well received by some players, with an average daily playtime per player of over three hours, it also has been strongly rejected by a significant portion of the community.
  • Finally, Ghost Recon Breakpoint did not come in with enough differentiation factors, which prevented the game’s intrinsic qualities from standing out.

We are tackling these issues head-on and already are implementing significant changes to our production processes. We are confident in our capacity to adapt and evolve, as we have done successfully many times in the past.

Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest Begins

The Borderlands Website announces a new patch is now available for Borderlands 3, which Gearbox says "fixes a number of reported concerns" in the looter-shooter sequel. They also reveal their plans for patches and hot-fixes that will arrive over the coming weeks. The new update also includes the launch of their Bloody Harvest Halloween event, which will run between now and December 5th. There is another event going on in the game, as this post has details on how to take part in Mayhem on Twitch, part of their Borderlands anniversary celebration. Here's a bit on the Bloody Harvest:
When Bloody Harvest begins, Maurice will offer you a repeatable mission that must be completed in order to reach Heck, the spooky setting for Borderlands 3's Bloody Harvest. Maurice kindly asks that you collect a certain amount of Hecktoplasm, an item that drops from slain Haunted enemies. You'll encounter Haunted enemies all over the galaxy during Bloody Harvest; you'll know them by their ghostly green glow. Once you've collected enough Hecktoplasm, Maurice will open a portal to Heck aboard Sanctuary III that will transport you to the creepy domain of Captain Haunt and his undead minions.

Once you've managed to stop shaking in your boots at the sheer spookiness of Heck, you'll have to fight your way through an undead army of Maliwan soldiers who are rising from their graves with ambitions of revenge. You'll also encounter freaky fauna including flying, fire-breathing Rakk-o'-Lanterns and wretched Ratch that've gorged themselves on blood. Deep within the depths of Heck lies Captain Haunt, the bony final boss of Bloody Harvest.

Ubisoft Suing over Rainbow Six Siege Cheats

Polygon has word that Ubisoft is taking legal action over Rainbow Six Siege cheats, saying Ubi is suing a company called MizuSoft that is alleged to have sold ‘hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of cheats for the tactical shooter. They say MizuSoft, perhaps unsurprisingly, is operated by a minor, but surprisingly also involves his mother. Word is: "Ten other defendants are listed on the lawsuit, the majority of which are being sued under their Discord names — Ubisoft only knows who the website owner is, according to the lawsuit. Ubisoft asking the court for maximum damages — $25,000 per violation — and to shut down the operation." Putting aside for the moment how most of us find it inexplicable (not to mention abhorrent) that players would pay good money ($13 a day!) to cheat, here's an explanation of what's going down:
Ubisoft said the cheat makers — including the site owner, called J.V.L. in the lawsuit, as he’s a minor — have violated copyright, are “trafficking in circumvention devices,” and encouraged Rainbow Six Siege players to breach the game’s terms of use and code of conduct.

MizuSoft calls itself “a leading cheat provider focused on providing powerful but user-friendly software.” On its website, MizuSoft also says it has a “clean detection record” and is “deadset on keeping cheat undetected” as a way to keep player’s accounts from being banned. The website has one product for sale, the “Budget Edition Rainbow Six Siege Cheat,” which is sold as a subscription — around $13 per day or $77 per month.

According to the lawsuit, MizuSoft is funneling the money earned through a payment processor linked to a web design firm called Simply San Webdesign, a company purportedly owned and operated by J.V.L.’s mother. Ubisoft said she’s “responsible for collecting, processing, and transmitting” payments made from the cheating software.

Ubisoft said MizuSoft’s cheats have been downloaded and used by Rainbow Six Siege players “thousands of times,” earning the website thousands of dollars each month. The company has reportedly spent “enormous sums of money (and vast amounts of time) attempting to remediate the damage” caused by the software.

FACEIT's Minerva AI Banhammer Strikes

The FACEIT Blog reveals that this anti-cheating service has launched an admin AI called Minerva that uses machine learning to detect toxic behavior without human intervention (thanks The Loadout). They report promising results from this system, saying it issued 90,000 warnings and 20,000 bans for verbal abuse and spam in a month of testing during Counter-Strike: Global Offensive matches. Word is: "Minerva is able to take a decision just a few seconds after a match has ended: if an abuse is detected it sends a notification containing a warning or ban to the abuser." They also discuss an SMS verification system that helps prevent existing users from creating smurf accounts. Here's more on Minerva's AI banhammer:
After months of training to minimize false positives, we have enabled Minerva’s automation. This began in late August, resulting in her making warning and ban decisions without manual intervention.

If you want to know more about how Minerva’s chat model work, you can read this case study by Jigsaw.

To share some insights with you, in the last few months over 200,000,000 chat messages were analyzed and 7,000,000 messages were marked as toxic.
In her first month and half of activity, Minerva issued 90,000 warnings and 20,000 bans for verbal abuse and spam. Toxic messages reduced from 2,280,769 in August to 1,821,723 in September, marking a 20.13% decrease.

Overall, fewer unique players are sending toxic messages. In August, 247,243 unique players sent at least one message that was flagged as toxic. This decreased to 227,676 unique players in September, decreasing by about 8%.

Elite Dangerous Fleet Carrier Update Delayed

A post on the Frontier Forums has news for Elite Dangerous players, as they announce a delay to the launch of the Fleet Carrier update to concentrate on fixing bugs introduced by the September update to the space exploration and combat game (thanks Rock Paper Shotgun). The fleet carriers were first promised as part of a December update, but now they are pushing this all the way out to second quarter of next year. They also say that work continues on their next paid addition to the game, and they expect this to go on sale by the end of next year:
In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:

  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.

As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

Out of the Blue

It was a pretty rough night here in the BlueTower, as MrsBlue's dad's health has taken a turn for the worse. He's been ailing for a while, but he's now in hospice, so phone calls and texts about the situation continued all through the night. Sadly, at this point it seems there's little question about how this will wrap up, it's only a matter of when. Things are too up in the air at this point to make concrete plans, but it's likely there's more travel in my immediate future. I won't be able to say what level of disruption this is likely to cause here until I know more, but when I do, I will let you know.
