Apex Legends Season 3 Begins

EA announces that Season 3: Meltdown is now officially underway in Apex Legends, their free-to-play battle royale shooter. This is accompanied by a new Battle Pass, which is detailed here, and they note that the pass is included with an Origin Access Premier subscription. The new season includes Crypto as the game's newest legend, a new map called World's Edge, and a new Charge Rifle weapon. Here's a Meltdown Trailer and here's word:
A NEW LEGEND APPEARS: CRYPTO

Cool, calm, and collected, Crypto deploys a specialized surveillance drone to stay in the fight and out of the spotlight.

NEW MAP: WORLD’S EDGE
After multiple suspicious setbacks during the reconstruction of Kings Canyon, the Syndicate has decided to move the Games to the cliffside mining city known as World's Edge on nearby Talos. Legends can explore towering skyscrapers "frozen" by a chemical explosion, then catch a train to ice-covered hills, while avoiding deadly pits of molten lava if they want to be crowned Champion in this new arena.

WHERE IS KINGS CANYON?
For the start of Season 3 World’s Edge will be the only playable map across both regular and ranked matches. As the season progresses we’ll be looking at data, sentiment, and feedback to help us determine the best way to bring Kings Canyon back into the mix.

NEW WEAPON: CHARGE RIFLE
This energy rifle/sniper takes a second to warm up and will do minor damage to players if you keep a bead on them before delivering a mighty blow to whomever is on the receiving end of it. The Charge Rifle is part of the standard loot pool and can be found all over the map.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint Microtransactions Revealed and Launch Trailer Released

With Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint due for release on Friday, Ubisoft paves the way with the Launch Trailer for the upcoming tactical shooter sequel. Also, WCCFTECH has an outline of all the microtransactions the game will offer, noting there's a way to use real money to purchase skill points, weapons, boosters, and more. Here's word:
Of course, a lot of the stuff you can buy in Breakpoint is your standard throwaway stuff – cosmetic gear, weapon skins, ect. – although it’s all pretty expensive. A single plain grey hoodie or vest may cost you $5 or $6, with the game encouraging you to pony up for bundles that may cost over $10 (click images for full resolution).

But the nickel and diming goes well beyond the cosmetic goodies. The game lets you directly buy vehicles, weapons, upgrades for those weapons, skill points used to unlock character perks, and bundles of crafting materials. As of now, Ubisoft is selling bundles of 60 skill points for around $20.

Just being able to buy more or less everything in the game not enough for you? You can also purchase boosters that will let you level up in the Battle Reward system quicker.

Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare This Week

Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare is set for official release on Friday, about 20 months after the launch of Steam Early Access for this guerrilla warfare simulator. A new trailer from a few days ago is the latest look at gameplay, and the announcement explains how this project evolved over the course of Early Access:
It's been one year and eight months since we participated in Early Access. During this time the game went through many changes, and if you would like to check out the first version of the game, you can download it from the Test Version Build when we fully release the game.

Back then, it's started like a small scale game, which mixed FPS and elements of Grand Strategy, Real Time Strategy, and RPG, with little features and simple graphics. Very soon after release, many media and players start to describe this game as a mix of Mount and Blade, Arma and Jagged Alliance. Then this game started to grow and become more and more unique with more complex systems, lore, and in-depth gameplay mechanics added to the game.

Now the game becomes more like an actual guerrilla warfare simulator, where you need to train civilians to become experienced fighters, equip them with whatever you can get, and fight together for the victory.

Main features:

  • One of the most unique features is that you are not only commanding your squads on the strategy map, but also go to fight with them in the first person mode. The player needs to act as both a commander and a soldier to fight a non-stop intense battle.
  • Conquering and managing towns in order to finance your war machine.
  • In-depth trading system with the option of designing your own trading routes and protecting your trading convoys from enemy ambushes.
  • Companions who can act as hero soldiers or as generals who help defend, attack, and manage cities.
  • Ability to join other factions' combat or call reinforcement from allies to assist your battle.
  • Immersive game lore which can be discovered through dialogues with NPCs.
  • Full modding support: Our game supports full modding. We have designed a set of easy-to-learn modding tools for modders to mod the game. The tools will be available after full release. Possible mods of this game can be world war mods, sci-fi mods, etc.

Drums of War Start Beating

Drums of War is now available on the Oculus Store and Steam, offering what developer Grind Core Games calls the next generation of music rhythm games. In this virtual reality musical action game you play as an orc (or troll, they use these terms interchangeably) drummer with an affection for heavy metal, as seen and heard in the Announcement Trailer. Here are some details:
The game is the brainchild of Alan Flores, a 20-year game industry veteran who was the lead designer on Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero Metallica, Band Hero, Tony Hawk's Project 8, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Sports Champions 2, and more.

In Drums of War, you hit the drums to the beat of the music to walk. Go “offbeat” … and your orc will veer off to one side! You can also bang on the side drums to turn – allowing for full 360 degrees of movement. But wait: There’s more! Your drums are also a powerful arsenal. The two center drums fire off deadly cannonballs – and you can also use the stick to throw fireballs. Take the fight to the dwarves, destroy their villages, and reclaim the right to once again call yourself “King of the Mountain.”

“After a repeat viewing of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, inspiration struck. Wouldn’t it be an amazing experience to storm through a battlefield as a giant troll drummer pounding on drums and laying waste to everything in your path?” says Alan Flores, lead game designer and founder, Grind Core Games. “The only problem was: How does one get the feeling of actually beating drums without a drum kit? Fast-forward to a few years later – and the idea wouldn’t go away no matter what I tried. By then, the new generation of VR headsets suddenly became commercially viable – and the rest, as they say, is history!”

Drums of War features an original score by Gabe Castro – composer of the indie hit The Forest and featured in Blasters of the Universe, HBO’s Vice Principals, and Portlandia. The game also includes ear-blasting tracks from popular metal bands Warbringer and Exmortus.

KEY FEATURES

  • Enjoy full 360 degrees of freedom in both movement and combat.
  • Experience visceral music rhythm gameplay in VR!
  • Fight off hordes of fantasy creatures – including pesky dwarves, chalky skeletons, sexy succubi, and much more.
  • Purchase drum skins from the shop for stat upgrades!
  • Rampage through 15 story levels and an unending supply of dwarves.
  • Bonus modes include:
    • Wardrum Hero: A high score combat challenge where you slay an endless horde of dwarves (inspired by Guitar Hero).
    • Jukebox: Bang the drums to the music and enjoy the scenery.
    • Two randomized dungeons!
  • Headbang-worthy metal soundtrack:
    • Original tracks from Gabe Castro, composer of the indie mega-hit The Forest.
    • Licensed tracks from metal giants Warbringer and Exmortus.

Op Ed

GamesIndustry.biz - Excessive crunch is bad for business.
"But the question management should be asking themselves is not: 'How do we meet this deadline?' Rather, it should be: 'Is this deadline achievable under normal working conditions?' And that question should be asked in a much earlier phase of the development.

The topic of crunch has come up in different roundtable discussions between different companies as well. From senior employees and management we sometimes hear about "passionate employees" as the reason for the overtime, shifting the blame for the crunch on the individual employee. Our survey shows the opposite -- 60% of respondents credited crunch to bad planning and pressure from management. Only 4% credited it to collegial culture."

Gearbox Responds to Union Beef

Kotaku has a statement from Gearbox Software to actor Troy Baker's comments about not performing in Borderlands 3 because of the game's use of non-union talent. Gearbox notes that Texas' right-to-work laws are behind their hiring for the game. They also have a statement on the matter from SAG-AFTRA, the union in question. We start with the SAG-AFTRA proclamation:
“We applaud any member who stands up for workplace fairness and the integrity of their creative work. It is a courageous decision to act in the best interests of one’s fellow SAG-AFTRA members and this honors all working people.

The misguided decision by Gearbox to deny their performers the opportunity to have fair union wages, a safe workplace and the possibility of health care coverage for their families, is unfortunate.

We attempted to sign Gearbox to a union agreement. They refused and disengaged from those talks.

We look forward to hearing from any Gearbox performer who is interested in the many protections a union agreement offers actors.”
Here's the statement Gearbox provided to Kotaku:
Troy is an exceptional talent and we were disappointed that he declined to partner on Borderlands 3 after being offered the part. We wish him the best and hope he knows the offer to collaborate with him still stands. Gearbox is a Texas company and is bound by Texas law – which means that a person cannot be denied employment because of membership or non-membership in a labor union or other labor organization. As a talent-owned and talent-led organization, Gearbox enthusiastically works to ensure our pay and working conditions meet or exceed union standards. We also believe strongly in hiring local voice actors whenever we can which is why we’re thrilled Troy’s career really took off after working with us.

Rabbids Coding Next Week

Ubisoft announces Rabbids Coding, a new game intended to tech the art of coding they will release for free on October 8th on Uplay. It sounds like this is aimed at kids, but read on if you are young at heart:
Rabbids Coding is a game created to be a fun and engaging educational experience, giving people the tools to get excited about learning to code. Players are tasked with cleaning up a spaceship that has been overrun by the Rabbids, which can be achieved by either providing simple instructions to a Rabbid wearing a mind-control device, or by dropping sausages in their line of sight. The game doesn't require any previous knowledge of coding at all; instructions are simple and can be dragged from a menu, placed in order, and tested with the play button. Didn't get the results you were expecting? Don't worry, just see where it went wrong, move some things around, and try again!

Rabbids Coding has been created to allow you to play with the concepts of coding, without constant supervision or instruction from a teacher. It gives you the independence to learn at your own pace, whatever your age. Your goal in each level is to provide the simplest instructions possible to get the task done. Once you've proven yourself in the basics, a sandbox environment becomes available, allowing you to explore and play with the instructions to see what you can do.

Out of the Blue

It turns out I was premature in my farewell to the duckies the other day. Though only four of my fine feathered friends showed up Saturday morning, we had a full house the few days since then. So while they remain in the vicinity for now, it seems safe to assume they will depart for warmer climes shortly, as it's now October, and the onset of autumn is pretty noticeable around here at this point.
