French Court Says Steam Should Allow Game Resales

This French article has word that a French court has ruled that users should be permitted to resell games and other media purchased through Steam (thanks Primalchrome). IGN has a reaction from Valve saying they will appeal the ruling. There is an article about the ruling on MSPoweruser that outlines it in English so we don't have to resort to Google Translate. Here's word:
“In a judgement rendered on September 17th by the Paris District Court… The Association for the Defence of Consumer Rights managed to obtain the cancellation of a number of clauses that Valve imposed on Steam,” the website says.

The biggest cancellation is that of Valve’s licensing of Steam games. Although you pay full price for titles on Steam, you do not own games you buy on Steam. This ruling changes that: by allowing you to sell your Steam games that you’ve purchased, gamers now have some form of control over their titles. The ruling doesn’t just apply to games. Games, movies, trading cards and more are all included.

John Wick Hex Next Month

The John Wick Hex Website announces the game will be released for Windows and macOS on the Epic Games Store. A new Release Date Trailer celebrates the news with a look at the action/strategy game. Here's a description:
John Wick Hex is a fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game that makes you think and strike like John Wick, the professional hitman of the critically acclaimed film franchise. Created in close cooperation with the creative teams behind the films, John Wick Hex is fight-choreographed chess brought to life as a video game, capturing the series’ signature gun fu style while expanding its story universe. Players must make quick decisions and choose every action and attack they make, all the while considering their immediate cost and consequences.

Featuring a unique blend of strategic momentum-based combat, John Wick Hex captures the feel of the unique tactical combat from the films and blurs the line between the strategy and action video game genres. Perform well and progress in the main story mode (which features an original story created for the game) to unlock new weapons, suit options and locations. Each weapon changes up the tactics you’ll use and the manner in which you’ll play. Ammo is finite and realistically simulated, so time your reloads and make the most of weapons you scavenge on the job.

John Wick Hex complements the style of the films with a unique graphic noir art design and features the world class voice talents of Ian McShane and Lance Reddick amongst its stellar cast.

Deadly Days Dawn

Deadly Days is now available on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux, offering a rogue-lite survival game. You can get a gander at the game's stylized pixel art in the Release Trailer. Here's the pitch:
Our apocalypse started simply enough — with the fast-food chain MKing launching a new burger product on the market. Addictive additives were secretly added to the meat in order to boost sales. You see where this is going, right? The plan worked out. However, the addictive drug meant that all logical brain areas shut down over time, except for the “Gimme fresh meat!” section of the brain. And it doesn’t want just a light snack, no, this is full-on brain buffets that it craves! As if that wasn't bad enough, this disease also prevents people from dying a natural death! To survive this munching monster nightmare, a high level of force is necessary.

Key features of Deadly Days include:

  • Over 60 different crazy items and tons of powerful special abilities that can dramatically change the outcome of any battle
  • Over 25 weapon types with randomly generated modifications
  • Over 30 different survivor skins and more than 10 unique zombie and boss types that only one want thing: brains!
  • Lovingly designed pixel art style and procedurally generated cities and missions
  • New integrated Twitch feature — viewers can now become survivors and decide which mission should be taken on next!

Enemy On Board Announced

Windwalk Games announces Enemy On Board, an asymmetrical multiplayer game coming later this year to Windows and macOS on Steam. This is a "hidden role" game set on a spaceship where two of the six players turn out to secretly be aliens. A Teaser Video promotes the concept to help get us on board. Here's more of what to expect:
Enemy on Board delivers bite-sized rounds that are packed with action and real-time strategic gameplay. Each round, 6 players wake up on a spaceship and 2 are randomly selected as aliens. Innocent crew members need to use everything at their disposal: weapons, tools and voice communication to identify and kill the aliens. Aliens need to work together to keep their identities hidden and kill the crew. Last team standing wins.
Threats come from all sides in Enemy on Board: players will not only face the deception of other members of their crew but the stability of the Andromeda hangs in a delicate balance. Keeping the ship in good repair will be a constant task for all players on board. Neglecting the ship will risk critical system failures causing the Andromeda to explode, killing everyone on board.

Set in a Dutch countryside villa, this game is being designed by Dutch developer Jim Offerman, whose resume includes Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider, and Thief. Here's a Video Developer Diary #1 from a few months ago and an even older Teaser Trailer to show we're a little behind the curve, and here are the details:

The task is ostensibly simple: secure Mr. Den Heer’s undisclosed research for the company. When you enter the house, however, they soon discover that Robert-Paul was a very complicated man. Play Conan Games Free This Weekend

Funcom announces a Free Conan Weekend on Steam is now underway, offering the chance to play Conan Unconquered and Conan Exiles for nothing. You can also play Age of Conan: Unchained gratis, but this MMOG is already free-to-play, so that's not particularly novel. But they are offering a sale on all the premium add-ons for Age of Conan: Unchained, and Conan Unconquered and Conan Exiles each also carry discounts. They offer a new trailer called Bêlit's Fury to show off a new playable hero they've added to Conan Unconquered. Here are the details on this free visit to the Hyborian Age:

The open world survival game, set in the savage lands of Conan the Barbarian, quickly became one of Funcom’s best-selling games after a successful Early Access run starting January 2017. Since the game launched in full on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 8 th, 2018, the game has had 7 DLCs and a host of free updates, adding new lands to explore, more end-game content, building pieces, bug fixes and performance improvements.

For a limited time, the game will be available at a 50% discount on Steam.

Age of Conan: Unchained
The MMO, which is widely considered to be one of the most brutal games in the genre, sold more than a million copies within weeks after launch. Age of Conan has benefited from years of continual development, improving the visuals, performance and content of the game.

The MMO was re-worked into Age of Conan: Unchained in 2011, making it available free, with the option of purchasing additional content. During the Steam Free Weekend, Hyborian Conqueror Collection – containing 4 expansions and an exclusive vanity item – will be available at a 60% discounted price.

Conan Unconquered
The real-time survival strategy game developed by the Command & Conquer-veterans at Petroglyph and published by Funcom was released earlier this year. This week the game has been updated, improving the game’s visuals and balancing, as well as adding a new playable hero – Bêlit the Pirate Queen – and new campaign scenarios. The price has been adjusted from $29.99 / €29.99 to $19.99 / €19.99 (prices may differ across territories) and will even be available at a 30% discount through the course of the week.

A Total War Saga: TROY Officially Announced

SEGA and Creative Assembly officially announce A Total War Saga: TROY, a new installment in the historical strategy series. This will come to Windows PCs via Steam in 2020, and Feral Interactive announced macOS and Linux editions should follow shortly thereafter. This news comes after the title was spotted on a magazine cover (this was actually first revealed in August through a trademark). They say this will go back to the Bronze Age, the earliest era ever covered by a Total War game. They also confirm the game will eschew historical accuracy by embracing some of the mythical creatures featured in Homer's Iliad. Here's the Announce Trailer, and there's a FAQ to answer any burning questions this raises. Here's the announcement:
SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced Creative Assembly's thrilling new strategy title reconstructing one of the greatest stories ever told, A Total War Saga: TROY™. Inspired by Homer's Iliad, TROY will let you forge a heroic legacy in the late Bronze Age, the furthest back in time the critically acclaimed franchise has ever travelled.

In TROY, the fate of Aegean civilisation will be in your hands; each choice you make will shape the lands from the mythical heights of Mount Olympus to the arid deserts of Lemnos. Experience history as it may have happened or shape the legend for yourself in this unique chapter of Total War™.

Homer's Iliad is rich with myth, legends, gods and monsters. TROY casts these stories through a historical lens to consider what might have really happened but ultimately lets you decide which heroes will fall in battle and which will be immortalised in legend.

The battlefields will tremble under the feet of renowned warriors like Achilles and Hector but it will take more than brute force alone to lay claim to the legendary city of Troy. You will need to deftly manage a barter economy, conduct diplomacy among friends and foes, and curry the very favour of the Gods themselves before etching your name in the annals of history.

Total War Saga titles channel the grand strategy and real-time battles of a core Total War game into an intense flashpoint in time, letting you determine the outcome of pivotal moments in history. This change in scope and perspective makes Total War Saga the perfect home for innovation, often leading to new ideas that go on to influence future tentpole titles.

A Total War Saga: TROY will release on Steam for PC in 2020. Add it to your wish list here:

For Honor Season 3 Event Begins

Ubisoft announces that a new Wrath of the Jormungandr Season 3 event is now live in For Honor, their melee combat game. This includes a limited-time game mode called Ragnarok, which sadly does not involve Thor. There are also new outfits, themed weapons, and a new execution. Here's a Wrath of Jörmungandr Cinematic Trailer and Ubisoft is holding a Livestream on YouTube for this which should kick off in about a half-hour. Here are the details:
Today, Ubisoft announces the Year 3 Season 3 For Honor® in-game event, Wrath of the Jormungandr starting today until October 3 at 6am PT. With more than 20 million players, For Honor is available on PlayStation®4 entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X and Windows PC. For Honor is now available on UPLAY+,* Ubisoft’s subscription service.

The in-game event will come with a special limited-time game mode, Ragnarok, which transforms the Breach game mode in celebration of the Jormungandr, their Hamarr, and the map Storr Stronghold. Players will have the chance to wield The Mighty Hammer, creating remarkable combat with opponents in this special version of Breach mode. The Hammer is spawned by the deadly Sea Serpent, and will change the moveset of each character, adding two new special abilities to take on enemy factions:

  • Chain Lightning: An ability that does medium damage and has a small knockback, and jumps to nearby enemies.
  • Ground Smash: A one shot area of effect attack on the ground at the position of the wielder.

The event also introduces a new Battle Outfit, Storr Champion, as well as fantastical Illustrious Outfits, flowing with the true spirit of the Serpent. In addition, the event also adds a new execution, Rampage of Ragnarok, as well as themed weapons.

Year 3, Season 3 ’Hulda’ brought players the Jormungandr, a feral warrior who is part of the Viking Faction of For Honor. Following the events in Dead Shades, another legendary battle marked Heathmoor's history. During Year 3 Season 1, Campaign 1, the Knights had conquered most of the continent. As they marched on Valkenheim, they clashed with the Vikings of Thornfinn Coast in Battle 28. To everyone's surprise, the Vikings held the fortress, repelled all enemies from the North, and won all the remaining campaigns. The Wrath of the Jormungandr event tells the battle that led the Vikings on a path to absolute victory in Year 3 Season 1.

Rainbow Six Siege Permanent Ban Wave

Ubisoft announces plans for a ban wave for Rainbow Six Siege to remove the worst offenders behind DoS and DDoS attacks in the tactical shooter. In a post on Reddit Ubisoft confirms that these bans will be permanent (thanks PCGamesN). They also say they are initiating legal action against attackers and those providing them services. Here's the plan:
We have monitored an increase in the amount of DDoS and DoS attacks against our servers following the release of Operation Ember Rise. Below you will find our next steps for how we plan to address the situation and move forward.

We have identified the worst offenders perpetuating these DDoS/DoS attacks, and will be initiating a ban wave. This will apply to both PC and Console players.
Impact: Players that have been found to be initiating DDoS/DoS attacks will be banned.
Target: Next Week, will continue as needed

We currently host 3 matches per server. When a server crashes, or when a DDoS/DoS attack occurs, this results in 3 matches being impacted and taken offline. We are splitting this to have each server host a single match to reduce the impact
Impact: 66% reduction in the impact of DDoS/DoS attacks.
Target: End of this week

We have noted the unintended consequences of the escalating abandon sanction on players impacted by DDoS/DoS attacks. We are disabling this feature to reduce the longer term impact that is felt by legitimate players.
Impact: Reduce impact felt by legitimate players after a match has been ended via DDoS/DoS/Soft Booting.
Target: End of this week

Also, a new Borderlands 3 Troubleshooting and Optimization Guide is online. Here's are Gearbox's suggestions for PC players:

Natural Selection 2 Adds New Map

Unknown Worlds announces details on a new Update 329 that's now live in Natural Selection 2, their first-person shooter/RTS hybrid. This includes the release of ORIGIN, a new remake of one of the maps from the first Natural Selection. The update also includes the ability to earn a new skin along with balance changes and a new menu. They also note that this marks the game's official move from DirectX 11 to DirectX 12 and that they are dropping the game's Linux client, though they will continue to support Linux dedicated servers. Here's word:
Our newest official map, ORIGIN, a remake of the NS1 map, holds the answers to the Origins of Kharaa and is now available to play. You can earn the special Abyss Gorge skin after playing five rounds, but hurry as this skin is only available for a limited time! Thank you to pSyk for all his hard work on re-creating this classic map and to our map testing crew for all of their time reviewing and assisting on the map.

Update 329 also brings another set of balance changes aimed at creating more variation of play and strategy. A new menu system has been designed and built for a better player customizing experience and allows for easier implementation of future features to come. We have officially moved to DirectX 11 and added support for Temporal Anti-Aliasing, both of which can help produce better quality of play and visual upgrades to your game. Additional changes to other official maps have also been added to support better gameplay and help new players learn the maps.

A reminder that with the release of 329 we have officially dropped support for the Linux client of NS2. We will continue to support and update the Linux Dedicated Server. For those using the Linux client, you can still play NS2 via the Steam Play compatibility tools (Proton). Proton is still in Beta and being actively developed so there may be some features or functions that do not work. We have confirmed that playing the game while connecting to a dedicated server does work and in some cases the performance is much improved from the Linux client.

Out of the Blue

It's Thursday, so participants in our Pigskin Pick'em pool should get in their selection for tonight's game. Also, I mentioned the rough start to the week in my fantasy football debut. Sure enough, after scoring the most points in week one by a margin of about 35(!), I came within six points of having the fewest points in week two. I'll have to talk with my players about consistency. Finally, in the world of the actual NFL, my hometown Giants announce they will start rookie Daniel Jones this week, seemingly bringing the Eli Manning era to a conclusion. This was inevitable when they drafted Jones at number six, and I'm okay with it. At 0-2, the team's playoff prospects are already crippled. This is not really Eli's fault, but either way the time is right for the kid to start getting some real game experience under his belt. Like most Giants fans, I have an abiding affection for Eli and his two amazing Super Bowl runs. He is clearly one of the team's all-time greats, and I fully support the idea he belongs in the hall-of-fame. Here's a salute and a thank you to #10.
