Homeworld 3 Announced

Gearbox Software officially announces Homeworld 3 is in development at Blackbird Interactive, taking the wraps off the space strategy sequel at PAX West. They have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Fig, where they offer a giant batch of details on the project along with this Announce Trailer. Here's a bit on the game and why they are going the crowdfunding route:

Homeworld returns with the next chapter of the story. Homeworld 3 is the true sequel to the legendary space-faring RTS. Blackbird Interactive, founded by original Homeworld Art Director Rob Cunningham takes the helm on development, returning the series to its roots with a gripping continuation of the story, fully 3D combat, and the classic RTS elements you expect. Further supported by the veterans of Homeworld Remastered Collection at Gearbox Publishing, Homeworld 3 is coming to life and the teams couldn't be more ecstatic. With our partners at Fig, we can give fans both new and grizzled a chance to fuel and profit from Homeworld 3's success. Now, first things first:

Homeworld 3 is a thing! It's already in pre-production. We want your help in building the game's success.

So why Fig? First, we're partners, and we believe in the platform's ability to bring devs and players closer together. We've been craving the right opportunity to dive deep with a community in a way only crowdfunding offers. With Homeworld's incredibly patient and thoughtful community, we've got exactly that opportunity.

We’re incredibly early on in this project--only a few months into pre-production. That means you can snag a backstage pass to impact the game’s development and prove that the fanbase still craves Homeworld 3. When you come aboard, you’ll not only get the insider access you expect as a supporter.

This is your chance to tell us what you expect of Homeworld 3, including its features, priorities, and even what the collector’s edition will include. We’ll share the data we’ve received from you throughout the game's development and show how its influenced the scope and priorities of Homeworld 3. It’s a unique experience that only Fig can offer and we're excited for the most open development process in both Blackbird's and Gearbox's history. Of course, because it's Fig, there's the unique opportunity to invest in Homeworld 3's success. You don't just get the game. You get a chance to profit too. If you’re not into it, no worries. We’ll see you at launch later down the line.

Borderlands 2 VR Coming to PC

2K Games and Gearbox Software announce that Borderlands 2 VR is coming to PC this autumn. The VR version of the shooter sequel debuted last year on PSVR, but now they offer this PC Announce Trailer and the following details, courtesy of Gematsu:

Developed by Gearbox Software, Borderlands 2 VR brings the iconic world of Pandora to life like never before. Fans will virtually become a treasure-seeking Vault Hunter, grab 87 bazillion guns, and face off against the galaxy’s most charming psychopathic dictator, Handsome Jack, to free Pandora from the corrupt Hyperion Corporation.

Key Features

  • Virtually Step onto Pandora: Step into the boots of a treasure-seeking Vault Hunter armed with 87 bazillion possible guns on a quest to line your pockets with loot and free Pandora from Handsome Jack’s clutches. Blast bandits with real-world aiming, punch bullymongs in the mouth, find the perfect gun inside a life-sized treasure chest and inspect it from every angle. Catch-aRide and race across Pandora in first-person view and experience the thrill of a psycho running toward you with grenade in-hand yelling, “Boom time!”
  • Virtually Slow Time: Borderlands 2 VR includes new features unique to the VR experience to empower Vault Hunters in their fight against Handsome Jack. With Bad Ass Mega Fun Time (aka BAMF Time), players can use this new slow-mo ability to literally slow the speed of the game temporarily to set up their next attack. In addition, with the option to Teleport, players can glide across Pandora as gracefully as Claptrap (if he had grace).
  • Become a Virtual Vault Hunter: Take on the role of one of four playable classes – Siren, Commando, Gunzerker and Assassin – each with unique combat styles and updated skills that leverage the new VR functionality, including the new BAMF Time ability. Whether crushing enemies with Maya’s Siren powers, calling in Sabre Turret reinforcements as Axton, feeling the heft of dual-wielded machine guns as Salvador, or the satisfying swing of Zer0’s sword in an enemy’s back, Borderlands 2 VR immerses players like never before.
  • Experience Virtual Improvements: For the first time ever, players can experience the sublime exhilaration of driving around the Borderlands in first-person perspective – accelerating and steering with the joystick and aiming the vehicle’s weapons with their headset. With the use of the motion controllers and headset, players can interact with the menu systems in a new and intuitive way for the platform, easily navigating through the menus by pointing, clicking, dragging and dropping. Players will also have the choice of preferred movement styles. Whether that’s the VR popular pointed-teleportation, or the classic direct movement style with joysticks – your experience should feel good for VR and true to form of classic Borderlands.
  • Get Virtually Rich: Borderlands 2 VR brings shoot-and-loot mechanics to VR with bazillions of procedurally-generated guns and gear, each with their own capabilities and modifiers. Procedurally-generated shields, grenades, relics, class mods and more round out your Vault Hunter’s arsenal for maximum power and mayhem.

Fishing: North Atlantic Announced

Developer Misc Games and publisher astragon Entertainment announce Fishing: North Atlantic, a follow-up to Fishing: Barents Sea that takes the commercial fishing simulator into even more open-waters. They say they will catch and release this next year, and the Fishing: North Atlantic has already spawned, though details like target platforms are not being discussed at this point. Here's a first Teaser Trailer and here's more:

The success story continues: With Fishing: North Atlantic, astragon Entertainment and developer Misc Games will release a successor to the simulation hit Fishing: Barents Sea in 2020. Lots of new features, fish species, fishing methods and, of course, ships are set to delight fishery fans around the globe. As the game’s title already suggests, players will also be able to discover a brand-new setting: The Canadian province of Nova Scotia and the North Atlantic Ocean will be offering an exciting backdrop for even more extensive fishing expeditions. Another interesting news for players is the cooperation of Misc Games with the UK software studio Simul Software. Misc Games will use the already well-known weather renderer trueSKY from Simul for Fishing: North Atlantic, but also their realistic ocean renderer Volumetric Water, which is currently still in development.

While the open source ocean simulation OceanProject used in Fishing: Barents Sea reproduced the waves of the Barents Sea only as adjustable sine curves, Volumetric Water will be able to calculate the waves by taking the in-game wind direction and intensity into account, which will result in a more realistic water behaviour including wave breaking. Moreover, the new water shader provides natural transparency and light reflections on the water surface.

Additionally, Misc Games plans to develop a completely new buoyancy algorithm for Fishing: North Atlantic to ensure realistic buoyancy for every ship in the game. Fans can also look forward to seeing and steering lots of new ships and boats which will come in a varied mix of different sizes, shapes and functions.

Detailed particle effects will display water displacement, water turbulences as well as wake and therefore ensure that Fishing: North Atlantic will provide an immersive fishing simulation experience.

Oriental Empires: Three Kingdoms Released

GOG.com and Steam both now feature Oriental Empires: Three Kingdoms, offering a new expansion for this strategy game set in historical China. The Launch Trailer provides a look, and the announcement explains all:

The Three Kingdoms period was one of the most turbulent periods of Chinese history, and the most beloved thanks to its vivid depiction in the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. The ancient Han Dynasty was coming to an end, and the empire was in chaos. Bandits and rebels were overrunning the countryside, the Emperor was just a child, and control of the court had been seized by a vicious tyrant.

Yet the time of chaos was also a time of opportunity, when men of courage and ambition could rise to power from outside the traditional aristocracy. A common soldier could become a warlord, a sandal maker could become an emperor, and a fugitive would come to be revered as a god.

In this expansion you take the role of a warlord attempting to re-unite the land, and create a new dynasty.

Three Kingdoms Features

  • Choose from any of 26 factions on a new campaign map that stretches from Vietnam to the northern borders of China.
  • Play as one of the founders of the Three Kingdoms; the tyrant Dong Zhuo; one of many major or minor warlords, or exploit the chaos as a barbarian or bandit.
  • Unique portraits and in-game models of more than a dozen major figures.
  • More than 300 named historical characters.
  • Scripted events introduce new characters and depict important events from history and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel.
  • New unit models depict the soldiers of the Three Kingdoms era, as well as the Nanman and Qiang barbarians.

Heave Ho Released

The Heave Ho Website reveals this co-op arcade platformer is now available for Windows and macOS on GOG.com and Steam. Steam also offers a playable demo, and there's this launch trailer to show how you can play this with your friends and perhaps become enemies as you rely on each other to complete levels. Here's word on the game and plans to show it off this weekend at PAX West:

Independent developer Le Cartel and tight-gripped game label Devolver Digital have launched the physics-based local multiplayer game Heave Ho on Nintendo Switch and PC. Heave Ho has been hailed as the leading contender for 2019’s LMPGOTY [Local Multiplayer Game of the Year] by nearly everyone, except for that one dude Leonard who – honestly – sucks at games anyway.

Heave Ho tasks up to four players with a simple goal – don’t fall to your death! Players will use their own two hands and the outstretched grip of their friends to grapple across each level on their way to victory. Grab one another’s hands, climb across dangling bodies, and swing your pals to safety in a wobbly, dangly mass of limbs. Customise your character with all manner of stylish accessories and zany accoutrement in a vain attempt to remember who you are and which of your hands is the only thing between you and the plummet of doom.

Heave Ho is playable at PAX West all weekend on a 20-foot 4K screen and at the launch party in Paris that, well, you weren’t invited to anyway. Awkward.

Abandon Ship for macOS and Linux

Fireblade Software announces that macOS and Linux editions are now available for Abandon Ship, their seafaring action/adventure/strategy game that's currently sailing through Early Access on Steam. Here's word on how gamers on those platforms can get in on the action and help them sort through any issues that may be present:

The Mac and Linux versions of Abandon Ship have been released!

Welcome to all our new players on those platforms :)

  • Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon
  • Linux Mint native Steam
  • Manjaro Linux KDE desktop, Steam Flatpak install

Of course, if you are experiencing any issues, we're here to help! You can post on the Steam forums, email us at support@firebladesoftware.com, or reach out to our Discord: https://discord.gg/abandonship

We hope you enjoy the game, and if you like it please leave a review as it massively helps us out.

Manifold Garden This Year

William Chyr Studio announces Manifold Garden will launch later this year as a one-year exclusive on the Epic Games Store, saying that after that period passes the game will also come to Steam. Here they talk about the exploration game, and how the Epic deal is allowing them to expand its scope:

William Chyr Studio is thrilled to announce its long awaited exploration puzzle game Manifold Garden will launch for Windows PC this year as a 12-month timed exclusive on Epic Games Store -- rediscover gravity and explore an Escher-esque world of impossible architecture in this highly anticipated indie release.

Manifold Garden is a game that reimagines physics and space. Witness infinity in first-person, and master its rules to solve physics-defying puzzles. Cultivate a garden to open new paths forward, where an eternal expanse awaits.

Key Features

  • An expansive and visually striking world filled with mind-bending puzzles.
  • Manipulate gravity to gain new perspectives and walk on any visible surface.
  • Experience space in new ways as you explore infinitely repeating Escher-esque architecture.

The partnership with Epic has allowed the studio to expand the scope and polish of the project, as well as increase the size of the art and design teams. A 3rd party QA studio has also been brought on board to help track down and tackle bugs. The partnership ensures that the studio will be able to provide support for the game -- bug fixes and new features -- through launch and beyond.

Manifold Garden is also scheduled to release on Steam in 2020. Additionally, it has been announced for PS4 and other platforms are currently being explored.

Destiny 2 Year 3 Details

Bungie.net has details on how Seasons will work in year three for Destiny 2 (thanks PCGamesN). They are implementing some changes to the reward system, and changing the annual pass into a seasonal pass, so players opting for the premium experience can now do so in smaller slices. Bungie does not say if this relates to the impending move from Battle.net to Steam for the shooter sequel. Here's a bit on how you will experience the season with or without a pass:

Everyone who plays Destiny will be able to see how the world is different and changing during the Season. Those with the Season Pass will be able to play a seasonal matchmade activity within the Black Garden for that extra level of sweet gear (this is similar to the old Annual Pass access), but the goal is that everyone will be involved in how the world changes.

And at the end of the Season, your collective actions will have caused the world state to change and the Seasonal Activity connected to those events will also go away.

Doing this allows us to evolve the world—narratively, but potentially physically as well. It is not possible to keep Destiny frozen in place to allow all activities to live forever while also changing the world in meaningful ways. This strategy lets our team be agile and innovative. We believe that Destiny will grow even better when the world state can change, and that the best Destiny stories are the ones where “you had to be there when….”
