Op Ed

GamesIndustry.biz - Game streaming has not arrived - Opinion.
"For all their potential, streaming services just don't seem to be exciting to consumers yet. Much like digital distribution, they probably never will be. But they can still reshape the industry if they can find a compelling reason for consumers to adopt them. Digital distribution won players over with a degree of convenience consumers largely didn't even understand they wanted. While I can imagine an on-demand streaming service that re-shapes the industry by doing the exact same thing, the challenges to realizing that imagined service are tougher, more numerous, and some of them potentially insurmountable."

Wasteland 3 Next Year

The E3 trailer for Wasteland 3 is now online, offering the latest look at inXile's upcoming Wasteland sequel. The accompanying announcement adds a release window, saying we should expect the crowdfunded post-apocalyptic RPG in spring of 2020. Here's the news:

inXile Entertainment, the studio led by Interplay founder and Wasteland co-creator Brian Fargo and Deep Silver are pleased to announce that Wasteland 3 will be arriving in Spring 2020 on Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 4, Windows, Mac, and Linux. The legendary series, which pioneered the post-apocalypse genre in video games, returns players to the role of Desert Rangers, lawmen in a post-nuclear world working to rebuild civilization from the ashes. Trading the dry, dusty heat of the American south-west for a perpetually frozen Colorado, Wasteland 3 features a number of chilling new locations where the Rangers receive an even frostier reception from the locals.

In addition to narrative choices and consequences, and the tactical turn-based combat that the series is known for, Wasteland 3 delivers brand new features, including a dynamic conversation system that highlights the weird and wild denizens of the Colorado Wasteland, an upgradable player vehicle, and the ability to play through the storyline cooperatively with a friend online. Today’s trailer provides a small look at the big things in store for Wasteland fans.

According to inXile CEO Brian Fargo, “Wasteland 3 is a passion project for inXile and especially me. I directed the first Wasteland in 1988 and its sequel was one of the original great crowdfunding successes, and it’s a series we care deeply about. Thanks to our partnership with Deep Silver and Microsoft, we’re able to deliver the kind of deep, immersive experience that Wasteland fans want and expect.”

Stardock, Paul, and Fred Settle Star Control Lawsuits

The Star Control Website has details on the settlement of the long-running dispute between Stardock Entertainment and Paul Reiche & Fred Ford over the rights to the Star Control series. Word is this an amicable outcome that will lead to future collaborations on Star Control content and beekeeping:

Game Developers Stardock Entertainment, Paul Reiche and Fred Ford have amicably settled the dispute concerning the tangled intellectual property rights that surrounded the 30-year old game franchise.

In a statement released by Paul Reiche on their website, Mr. Reiche wrote, "Paul and Fred have offered to volunteer their own creativity to Origins by teaming up with Brad to create some new aliens and plot lines for Stardock's future Star Control games."

The settlement agreement, while itself confidential, expressly makes the terms available to the public.

"Paul and I both insisted to the lawyers that the terms should not be confidential," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. "We really wanted to make sure the fans didn't have to speculate on how we came together on this and that it was genuinely something that resulted in both sides getting what they wanted out of the situation."

The dispute revolved around the murky dividing line between what trademarks cover and what copyrights cover. Stardock claimed the trademarks to the classic series and Paul Reiche claimed the copyrights. The issue came to a head when both parties announced new games that appeared related to Star Control.

After a year of litigation, the dispute was ultimately solved by Reiche calling Wardell directly, bypassing the lawyers, and the two finding a lot of common ground on a wide range of topics ranging from game design to beekeeping.

Out of the Blue

After completing our re-watch of Deadwood, we finally got to view the new Deadwood movie. It's hard to believe my own reaction, but the series itself was even better than I remember, which says a lot for what I've long considered the best show of all time. The movie probably doesn't earn that kind of lofty accolade from me, but it was still a tremendous experience. It offered some much-needed closure and a glorious chance to revisit the setting and all those beloved characters that became so fully formed over the show's 36 episodes. Hoping this project would get made was a rollercoaster of ups and downs that spanned years, and I am still shocked but extremely grateful it finally happened.

Romero Games Announces Empire of Sin

Paradox Interactive and Romero Games announce Empire of Sin, a strategy game set in prohibition-era Chicago that's coming to Windows, macOS, and consoles in spring 2020. The Empire of Sin website is already online, offering screenshots and this cinematic announcement trailer. John Romero wants to make you his pitch:

Paradox Interactive and Romero Games have today announced Empire of Sin, a character-driven strategy game set in 1920s Chicago. Players build their own ruthless criminal empire as one of 14 distinct bosses vying to run the seedy underworld of organized crime in the city. With randomly generated starting conditions, players will have to adapt to survive and do whatever it takes to outsmart, out-gun and outlast their opponents. Empire of Sin will be coming to PC, Mac, Switch, Xbox and PlayStation consoles in Spring 2020.

Empire of Sin, the strategy game from Romero Games and Paradox Interactive, puts you at the heart of the ruthless criminal underworld of 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. It’s up to you to hustle, charm and intimidate your way to the top of the pile and do whatever it takes to stay there. This character-driven, noir-inspired game puts players smack-dab in the glitz and glamor of the roaring 20s, letting them thrive in the gritty underbelly of organized crime.

Features:

  • Build A Crime Empire: Raise your criminal empire from the ground up in several seedy enterprises (be it speakeasies, union skimming, or casinos) and building a team of loyal mobsters to make your mark on the streets. Once you make a name for yourself, expand your influence by taking over rival territory and adding more ventures to your repertoire.
  • Defend and Expand Territory: If it comes to blows (hypothetically, of course) and your posse needs to send a message, face off in brutal turn-based combat. Recruit your goons strategically to build a strong chemistry within your crew to maximize combat damage and help secure your hold on the city.
  • Explore a Living, Breathing City: Explore the streets of vibrant 1920s Chicago and interact with a full cast of living, breathing characters, each with lives of their own that inform how they react to what you do (or don’t do). Schmooze, coerce, seduce, threaten, or kill them to get your way.
  • Wield Your Influence: Make and break alliances, bribe cops, and trade on the black market to gain an edge and expand the influence of your crime family. Always keep your enemies close and ensure you have a mole on the inside and eyes everywhere.
  • Pursue Multiple Victory Strategies: Whether you make it to the top with violence, business smarts, or city-wide notoriety, there are a number of ways to become King or Queen of Chicago. With various starting conditions and constantly changing crew dynamics, no two playthroughs will ever be the same.

Marvel's Avengers Announced

Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix officially announce Marvel's Avengers, the recently revealed tie-in with the comic book super team. This is a solo and co-op action/adventure in development at Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, Crystal Northwest, and Nixxes Software for release on PC and consoles on May 15, 2020. The Marvel’s Avengers Website is live, offering links to pre-order and promising early beta access to those who do so, though the beta is to start as a PS4 exclusive. There's also an E3 2019 trailer titled "A-Day" with a cinematic look created from in-game footage. There are some cues from the movies like magic earpiece communications, but the clip shows this isn't really a tie-in with the MCU, as the characters don't resemble or sound like their highly paid cinematic counterparts. PCGamesN notes that future new heroes and regions will come to the game for free and that the game will feature neither "random loot boxes" nor "pay-to-win scenarios." Here's the announcement:

Marvel’s Avengers invites players to live their Super Hero dreams. Outstanding storytelling and an ever-expanding universe come together in the definitive Avengers gaming experience. Master extraordinary abilities, customize a growing roster of Heroes, assemble into teams of up to four players, and defend the Earth from escalating threats.

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

A first look at what to expect comes in the official announce trailer, which shows that even in a "dark and desperate sci-fi universe" you can still get a cool haircut. Songs of Conquest Announced

Coffee Stain Publishing announces Songs of Conquest, an "enchanting" adventure/strategy game coming to PC via the Epic Games Store. They offer an E3 2019 teaser announcement trailer with a look, and the chance to get selected for an imminent alpha test on the Songs of Conquest website. Here are the details:

Coffee Stain Publishing, the team behind Satisfactory and Deep Rock Galactic, and Lavapotion today revealed ‘Songs of Conquest,’ a beautiful turn-based adventure strategy game at the PC Gaming Show at E3. The single-player odyssey unfolds across a mystically charged, beautifully rendered pixel art world and sees players raise armies, command powerful magicians and build legendary kingdoms worthy of song. The fantasy adventure is inviting players to register for an upcoming alpha now at www.songsofconquest.com.

Songs of Conquest is a classic adventure strategy game where players will shape the fate of their kingdom. In a land brimming with magic and opportunity, they will command armies of otherworldly beings and powerful combat magicians, ‘Wielders,’ as they undertake quests, battle monsters and dominate enemies. To raise the ultimate fantasy empire players must focus on developing war strategies using the games’ unique combat system whilst optimizing build orders, managing resources and exploring the rich and unique fantasy world.

“Songs of Conquest is our love letter to the old school adventure strategy games that we grew up playing, but with a completely fresh look and a unique combat system that adds so many new layers to the traditional formula,” said Carl Toftfelt, Game Designer at Lavapotion. “Our team is made up of games and TV industry veterans with a huge passion for fantasy so bringing this world to life is an incredibly satisfying project.”

“We've been talking about doing a game in the spirit of our beloved old-school adventure strategy titles since the very early days of Coffee Stain, so Songs of Conquest has a very special place in our hearts,” said Anton Westbergh, CEO/Co-Founder of Coffee Stain. “It’s a title that's captivating and beautiful, but at its core very gameplay focused, it offers great strategic freedom and we know fans of the genre are going to be absolutely enthralled."

Bigben and development studio KT Racing are pleased to announce TT Isle of Man 2, the sequel to the official game of the Isle of Man's iconic Tourist Trophy motorcycle race. Several images have been released for the announcement. The game will be available in 2020 on consoles and PC.

This motorcycle racing sim is developed by KT Racing, a development studio specialising in racing games and known for creating the first TT Isle of Man game and other games based on the WRC franchise. Created in 1907, the Isle of Man TT is one of the world's most iconic races for motorcyclists.

It is certainly the most demanding and difficult motorcycle race. The course snakes through the Isle of Man's winding and narrow roads. Riders reach speeds of over 300 km/h, take off over bumps and scrape against low walls on a 60-km course with more than 250 bends to be memorised by heart: it's a breathtaking challenge!

Out of the Blue

I joked about it yesterday, but this does seem to be more PC gaming news than the usual E3. I wonder if that has to do with being near the end of the current console cycle? Whatever the cause, I'm happy about it. The occasions when the show is mostly console games can be a little depressing. It's also funny how much of the news from the show has rolled out already since it still hasn't actually begun. E3 2019 officially kicks off today at 2:00 pm EDT. Enjoy.
