Get Kathy Rain for Free on Steam

Steam is offering Kathy Rain as a free download for anyone who picks up this point-and-click adventure between now and tomorrow at 1:00 pm EDT. The game was first released exactly three years ago yesterday, so this is presumably a reverse birthday present. Here's a description of this throwback title:
Set in the 90's, Kathy Rain tells the story of a strong-willed journalism major who has to come to terms with her own troubled past as she investigates the mysterious death of her recently deceased grandfather. Armed with her motorcycle, a pack of cigs, and a notepad, Kathy begins to delve into a local mystery surrounding her hometown that will take her on a harrowing journey full of emotional and personal turmoil.

As she follows a trail of clues he left behind, questions emerge… What was Joseph Rain really looking for that night all those years ago? What turned him into a mere shell of a man, confined to a wheelchair? What secret did a suicidal young artist take with her to the grave, and why are so many people in Conwell Springs going mad? The truth is dark and sinister…

  • 4,000+ lines of dialogue
  • Full English voice acting directed by Wadjet Eye Games' Dave Gilbert
  • Original soundtrack
  • 40+ hand-drawn environments
  • Compelling narrative with eerie plot set in the 90's

Star Control: Origins Earth Rising Part 2 This Week

Stardock us gearing up to release Return of the Lexites on Wednesday, offering part two of their four-part Earth Rising expansion for Star Control: Origins. This trailer shows off the Lexites and hints at their nefarious intentions while somewhat prematurely saying this is available now. Here's a rundown on what to expect:
Set in the last 21st century, the player is the Captain of Earth's first interstellar starship with the mission to explore the galaxy, find allies to help protect Earth from hostile aliens and find the resources necessary to help Earth begin to expand to the stars.

The expansion pack, Earth Rising, will release in 4 parts. It adds a host of new aliens, ships, adventures and destinations to the already rich universe introduced in Star Control: Origins.Because Star Control is a non-linear action/RPG game, the new content does not require the player to have already completed the main story arc from the base game.

Highlights of Return of the Lexites include:

  • Lexites - The Post-Humans who left Earth decades ago are back!
  • New Missions - A series of missions dealing with Earth's expansion into the galaxy, as well as missions involving your command crew.
  • New Ships - Battle against new, fully-armed Lexite ships. Earn rewards from quests in order to unlock and purchase ships.
  • New Weapons - Take on new challenges as you face enemies with weapons you’ve never seen before.

Close Combat: The Bloody First Trailer

Slitherine offers the first trailer from Close Combat: The Bloody First, a new installment in the World War II RTS series they plan on launching later this year. The cinematic clip evokes the opening of Band of Brothers, while enjoining us to head over to this page to apply for its beta test. They also offer details on the game, which will put the player in command of the 1st Infantry Division, aka the Big Red One, immortalized in the 1980 film of the same name. Here are the details on the game:
Close Combat: the Bloody First is the next installment in one of the popular RTS franchises of all times.

After a long gestation that aims to bring the whole IP to a newer technology, the game is now almost ready to deploy. Well into its beta and with a release date that is now approaching fast, the Big Red One now also has a well-deserved Official Trailer.

The trailer was built with an emotional feel in mind and tries to deliver the concept of a true band of brothers fighting for each other and where no one is ever left behind. All this while celebrating a long-lasting series of games that truly made the history of strategy genre.

Lead the US 1st Infantry Division, better known as "The Big Red One", from the sand dunes of North Africa and Sicily invasion to D-Day landing beaches in Normandy. The Bloody First combines the Close Combat classic gameplay to the new 3D Archon engine: a new level of graphics details, more realistic units movement, same old unrivalled RTS tactical gameplay.

More information about the game itself can be found here.

As you fight your way into and then across Europe from November 1942 to August 1944 you must overcome a wide range of diverse tactical challenges, commanding inexperienced troops being attacked by veteran panzers in North Africa, having to capture the bitterly defended town of Troina in the Sicilian mountains and of course storming across the sands of Omaha, into the "hedgerow hell" of Normandy.

Three theater campaigns, 36 battles, more than 50 vehicles and 300 infantry and unit teams, with integrated multiplayer lobby and matchmaking forums. You will command your squads in close combat situations and will have to learn how best to combine the use of small arms, mortars, machine guns, armoured cars, tanks and anti-tank guns in order to achieve victory.

Your enemies are everywhere - inside stately homes and lordly cathedrals, down to the very dregs of the world in cellars and basements. Out of the Blue

We don't usually get swayed by the "drinking holidays" like New Year's Eve or St. Patrick's Day, but as I noted yesterday, we decided to have a Cinco de Mayo margarita party yesterday. We got take-out from a local Mexican place, and in honor of the occasion and Deadpool, I had a most excellent chimichanga (apologies to Summer Wheatley). A fine time was had by all, but it's hard to go wrong with fried food and tequila. In fact, a year might be too long to wait before doing this again. Is Cinco de Junio a thing?
