Electronic Arts Layoffs

Electronic Arts has laid off about 350 staff, which represents about 3.9% of their 9000 employees. There's an official statement on the EA Website from CEO Andrew Wilson calling these "important but very hard decisions." Word is these affect their marketing & publishing organization and operations teams, and they are also "ramping down" their presence in Japan and Russia. Here's the announcement:
Today we took some important steps as a company to address our challenges and prepare for the opportunities ahead. As we look across a changing world around us, it’s clear that we must change with it. We’re making deliberate moves to better deliver on our commitments, refine our organization and meet the needs of our players. As part of this, we have made changes to our marketing and publishing organization, our operations teams, and we are ramping down our current presence in Japan and Russia as we focus on different ways to serve our players in those markets. In addition to organizational changes, we are deeply focused on increasing quality in our games and services. Great games will continue to be at the core of everything we do, and we are thinking differently about how to amaze and inspire our players.

This is a difficult day. The changes we’re making today will impact about 350 roles in our 9,000-person company. These are important but very hard decisions, and we do not take them lightly. We are friends and colleagues at EA, we appreciate and value everyone’s contributions, and we are doing everything we can to ensure we are looking after our people to help them through this period to find their next opportunity. This is our top priority.

Trover Saves the Universe Announced

Squanch Games announces Trover Saves the Universe, a bizarre comedy/action game from Rick and Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland, will launch on June 4th for Windows and virtual reality, just a few days after the game launches for PlayStation4 and PlayStationVR. The PC edition will be released on the Epic Games Store and Steam, and besides traditional desktops, this will support Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. This trailer (NSFW) celebrates the news, but that warning is no joke, as the clip is more than a trifle edgy. Here's more on the game:
From the co-creator of Rick and Morty comes Trover Saves the Universe. Your dogs have been dognapped by a beaked lunatic named Glorkon who stuffed them into his eye holes and is using their life essence to destroy the universe. You're partnered with Trover, a little purple eye-hole monster who isn’t a huge fan of working or being put in the position of having to save the universe. Only you and Trover can save everything in this bizarre comedy adventure, created by Justin Roiland!

A comedy adventure filled with combat, platforming, puzzles, and morally questionable choices. See how the best intentions can go horribly awry. Control Trover's movements, but not his mouth. He’s got a lot to say about what’s going on in the game. Travel the cosmos to experience a variety of weird alien planets and bizarre characters with big personalities. Upgrade Trover AND YOURSELF with new abilities to (hopefully) defeat Glorkon while evading awkward situations.

Immerse yourself in weirdness, no matter which display you use. Switch between TV, monitor or VR headset displays* whenever you want. *Additional hardware required.

Journey to the Savage Planet Trailer

Publisher 505 Games and developer Typhoon Studios now offer a new teaser trailer with a taste of what to expect from Journey to the Savage Planet, their upcoming first-person adventure game. This is described as an "environmental teaser," and it runs just 30 seconds, but they promise more details about the game will roll out over the course of this year to pave the way for a planned 2020 launch. Here's word:
Journey to the Savage Planet is an aspirational and upbeat first-person adventure and exploration game set in a bright and colorful alien world filled with weird and wonderful creatures. As an employee of Kindred Aerospace, which proudly touts its rating as the “4th Best Interstellar Exploration Company,” players are dropped onto the uncharted planet AR-Y 26, deep in a fictitious, far-away corner of the universe. Launched with high hopes but little equipment and no real plan, players are invited to explore, catalog alien flora and fauna and determine if this strange planet is fit for human habitation.

“As a studio we have a deep love of Golden Age science fiction, but it feels like some of the positivity and sense of adventure has been lost in recent years,” said Alex Hutchinson, creative director and Typhoon Studios co-founder. “There are too many dystopias for my tastes, so we wanted Journey to the Savage Planet to give space exploration its sense of adventure back in homage to those early sci fantasies and add a comedic twist. This teaser is just a small taste of what we’ve been working on; we can’t wait to show off more in the coming months.”

Streets of Rage 4 Trailer

A new trailer from Streets of Rage 4 provides a first look at gameplay from Dotemu's upcoming fighting game sequel. The clip shows off some knuckle-busting combat and the game's distinctive art style. Included is the following explanation:
The clip finds our dear friends Axel and Blaze reunited and dishing out beatdowns - with all-new moves - to a fledgling group of ill-advised criminals in full force. Streets of Rage 4’s vibrant visuals, courtesy of the team behind 2017’s stunning Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, bring the game’s troubled city to life with a fluid, exaggerated style. The game’s hand-drawn animation adds a burst of flair to every pummeling while still encompassing the gritty aesthetic perfected within the original trilogy.

Streets of Rage 4 is the first installment to the mainline series in more than two decades and will revitalize the iconic baddie-bashing gameplay with modern touches, fresh pulsing jams, and more surprises to be revealed. The team behind Streets of Rage 4 is drawing from a lifetime of love for brawlers to introduce new fans and remind veterans alike why Streets of Rage is one of SEGA’s most beloved series.

Cyan Kickstarting Firmament

Cyan announces Firmament, a "next-generation enigmatic narrative adventure" from the Myst developer. They are seeking almost $1.3 million to fund this game through Kickstarter, saying the goal is to release this initially for PC, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive in the summer of 2020. The Firmament Website is now online, offering a teaser trailer, showing off the game's steampunk vibe. Here's the plan:
Cyan once again turns to its fans with a Kickstarter campaign to help fund an amazingly immersive new game, Firmament, and to further explore VR as the next generation technology in world building. Deeply rooted in the spirit of Myst, Riven and more recently, Obduction, Firmament is an all-new, immersive, atmospheric adventure that will be released initially for traditional gaming on PC, and VR headsets Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

“Kickstarter is a way for us to reach out to our fans to help us fund the types of games we like to build and they like to play.” said Rand Miller, CEO, Cyan. “Anyone who knows Cyan understands that we have always embraced pushing the boundaries of world creation. We believe that VR is part of an evolutionary step in making our worlds even more immersive. Empowering our fans to fund through Kickstarter allows us to explore these creative opportunities. Oh, and they’re gonna love this game.”

Firmament is an all-new story and experience, but it draws on and embraces the steampunk aesthetics (that define parts of Myst) to weave a rich and surprising narrative - with just a touch of magic. The player explores various fantastic worlds with the help of a mechanical adjunct. This constant companion gradually becomes an essential instrument as the player learns how to seamlessly interact, guide, and communicate with it, uncovering a remarkable chain of events.

Cyan’s previous game, Obduction, and most recently the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection, were both successful Kickstarter campaigns. For the Firmament campaign, Cyan is collaborating with Fangamer to create the merchandise. Fangamer has a reputation for creating exceptional merchandise – shirts, plushies, books, prints, pins, etc. – inspired by some of the best video games of all time.

With successful funding through Kickstarter, Firmament will be scheduled for release in the summer of 2020 and be available for PC, Rift and Vive.

For now you can sign up for the beta on the ABYA Website, and read on for more on their plans:

Out of the Blue

It's looking like the weather is cooperating with the calendar in these parts, as it's been pretty spring-like since around the start of the season. It definitely invokes a little guilt to enjoy this amid reports of flooding and other severe climate problems in other areas, though, and it's a little scary to see news that more flooding is expected in the areas already suffering too much water. Here's hoping that it doesn't turn out as bad as predicted and that those in affected areas can stay safe (and dry).
