Dawn of Man Dawns

Steam News announces that Dawn of Man for Windows and macOS is now available on Steam, offering an indie survival strategy game. Word is: "Command a settlement of ancient humans, guide them through the ages in their struggle for survival. Hunt, gather, craft tools, fight, research new techs and face the challenges the environment will throw at you." This trailer takes a look at the game, and this post has details on a new version 1.0.2 patch. Here's word:
Take control of a settlement of the first modern humans, guide them through the ages in their struggle for survival.

Dawn of Man is a survival/city-builder from the creators of Planetbase.

The game starts in the Stone Age, and takes you up to the Iron Age, spanning more than 10,000 years of human prehistory.

You will have to get your people to survive, expand and evolve, just like our ancestors, facing the challenges that the environment will throw at you.

DCS World F-14 DLC This Month

The unfortunately named ED Forums have word from Heatblur that their F-14 DLC is set to take off in Eagle Dynamics' DCS World on March 13th (thanks InBlack). Here's a trailer celebrating the news in glorious 21:9 aspect ratio, and here are some details from the post:
We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved so far. With a flight and systems model that has been engineered over the course of several years and carefully vetted through hundreds of combined flight hours by F-14 legends, we lay the foundation for an F-14 simulation that hopes to acknowledge and honor the men and women of the Tomcat community and all of their hard work. Throughout this journey, we’ve been blessed to work with many fantastic people and subject matter experts who have been absolutely invaluable in bringing the aircraft to life. Thanks to all of you!

This will be the beginning of our Tomcat journey. Our sole focus will now become the absolute perfection of our Viggen and Tomcat products through their Early Access periods, as we continue towards release versions of both modules and add new, exciting AI content into the skies of DCS World.

Op Ed

The Outline - I don’t wanna do my video game chores. Thanks Slashdot via Ant.
"On top of all the bigness, Red Dead Redemption 2 is also incredibly dull. I’ve been playing it off and on since it was released, and I’m still waiting for it to get fun. I’m not alone in thinking so — Mark Brown of Game Maker’s Toolkit called it “quite boring” and Mashable said it’s a “monumental disappointment.” There are a glut of Reddit posts from people complaining about how slow the game feels, usually with a tone of extreme self-consciousness. Unless you’re a real asshole, it’s not exactly fun to stray from popular consensus.

Perhaps the general hesitancy to criticize the game is due to the fact that it’s not technically bad. Its graphics and scale really are impressive. It is designed to please. And yet RDR2 seems to exemplify a certain kind of hollowness that’s now standard among Triple-A titles. It’s very big, with only tedium inside. Call it a Real World Game."

Out of the Blue

Dug out of some more snow today. This seemed almost pointless because it's so warm it would probably all melt off by itself with no human intervention. It was pleasant enough that I wore my new pajama pants shoveling uniform again. But this still seems prudent: There's more snow in the forecast, and it's not worth risking a melting, snowy refreeze situation that could result in a nightmarish ice sheet scenario.
