Dragon Age Return May Take Ages

Though BioWare recently teased Dragon Age announcements in 2019, VentureBeat reports a new installment in the RPG series is at least three years away. This is not confirmed, and they say EA declined their request for comment, but here's what they say they year from "sources familiar with the studio":

Dragon Age 4 — or whatever name it’ll carry — is at least three years away, according to sources familiar with the studio. That timeline could change, but that is the current expectation at EA. BioWare and EA have not even settled on a name for the new Dragon Age — although that is something they could decide in preparation for a reveal at The Game Awards.

And this is not new for Dragon Age. The game has spent more than a year in limbo at EA.

In January, I reported that BioWare pushed aside Dragon Age to focus on Anthem. The studio started pre-production on a new Dragon Age, but EA threw out most of that work. At that time, the publisher was shifting its games to live services. That Dragon Age project wasn’t going to fit into that business model. As a result of that reboot, Dragon Age writer Mike Laidlaw — who had an outline prepared for the new game — left BioWare.

Following those events, the developer has not put a substantial amount of work into a new Dragon Age. BioWare needs a hit, so the entire studio is putting its efforts into ensuring a successful launch for Anthem.

Star Control: Origins - Earth Rising Part One Next Week

Stardock announces Star Control: Origins - Earth Rising, a new four-part expansion for Star Control: Origins, the recent addition to the classic space strategy series. This kicks off one week from today with the release of part one, which adds "dozens of missions, new alien races, and a variety of ships." Subsequent chapters will come one per quarter, so part four is expected by summer. Here's word on the add-on, where you play the game's version of Zefram Cochrane:

As Captain of Earth's first interstellar starship, your primary mission is to ensure the safety of Earth from hostile alien forces through a combination of diplomacy and combat skill, while acquiring the materials and technologies Earth needs to begin growing beyond its home solar system.

In the first part, Aftermath, players discover that not every alien is happy about the prospect of an expanding human empire. There are unknown enemies lurking in the shadows seeking to undermine Earth's ambitions, while others begin to react to the recent successes of the Earth captain and his primitive ship.

While the expansion adds a great deal of content for those who have already completed the major events of Star Control: Origins, much of the new content greatly expands the richness of the Star Control universe for first-time players, including many new side-quests, new alien species, and new ships to recruit.

Epic's Online Store To Undercut Steam Royalties

Epic Games announces plans to launch their own online store as a direct competitor to Steam and similar services. Valve recently announced an increased split for best-selling games, which prompted some outcry from smaller developers. It's not clear if Epic's news is a direct response to that, but at the heart of the announcement is word that 88% of sales will go to developers, and they offer a comparison chart showing how generous this is compared with Steam splits. Here's word:

As developers ourselves, we wanted two things: a store with fair economics, and a direct relationship with players. And we've heard that many of you want this too!

Soon we'll launch the Epic Games store, and begin a long journey to advance the cause of all developers. The store will launch with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, then it will open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019.

The Epic Games store will operate on the following principles:

All Developers Earn 88%
Developers receive 88% of revenue. There are no tiers or thresholds. Epic takes 12%. And if you’re using Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%.

PhysX Now Open Source

A blog post from NVIDIA announces PhysX is now open source, following years of this physics modeling software being proprietary. The source code is now available on GitHub, and here's a bit of what they have to say about it:

PhysX will now be the only free, open-source physics solution that takes advantage of GPU acceleration and can handle large virtual environments.

It’s available today as open source under the simple BSD-3 license.

PhysX solves some serious challenges.

  • In AI, researchers need synthetic data — artificial representations of the real world — to train data-hungry neural networks.
  • In robotics, researchers need to train robotic minds in environments that work like the real one.
  • For self-driving cars, PhysX allows vehicles to drive for millions of miles in simulators that duplicate real-world conditions.
  • In game development, canned animation doesn’t look organic and is time consuming to produce at a polished level.
  • In high performance computing, physics simulations are being done on ever more powerful machines with ever greater levels of fidelity.

The list goes on.

Arma 3 Adds Competitive Multiplayer

This post on Steam announces the release of Warlords for Arma 3, a free update which adds a competitive multiplayer mode to Bohemia Interactive's military shooter sequel. They include this trailer that shows off the objective-oriented gameplay this features, along with the following explanation:

Today we've released a free update for Arma 3, which introduces a new competitive multiplayer mode called “Warlords”. A trailer video explains the mode’s basic concept in the form of a military briefing.

In Warlords, there are two competing teams, and their goal is to capture the base of the opposite side. Players start the match by joining either the NATO or CSAT faction. Both teams then need to start conquering sectors across the map, belonging to non-player AI forces from the AAF faction. By establishing a chain of linked sectors, opponents can plan a route from their own base to their enemy's base. Once they reach their destination, they can stage an assault against the opposing side’s base to win the game.

During the match, players can also earn Command Points. The better an individual's performance on the battlefield and the more sectors held by their team, the greater number of points they will have available to them. These can be used to request airdrops with additional vehicles, special weapons, superior gear, friendly AI reinforcements, or strategic advantages such as fast travel and sector scans.

Besides the Warlords multiplayer mode, Update 1.86 also incorporates the ADR-97 weapon pack (which originally served as an official showcase mod) directly into the base game. That means players, but also content creators and server hosts, can make use of this family of weapons without needing to be subscribed to the mod on the Steam Workshop.

They this is the biggest content update for the game this year, adding two new ships, a new discovery system for exploration, advanced mining techniques, additional multiplayer options, and more. They offer this trailer to show off what's new, and provide more details on the plan to satisfy our curiosity:

A new Analysis Mode, with the improved Exploration Discovery Scanner and Detailed Discovery Scanner, is a game-changing new way for all Commanders to explore the galaxy. After an initial scan of the system, players will then be able to tune their scanners to find stellar bodies and other phenomena. Not only is this new system a more realistic, satisfying and engaging exploration experience, but also provides players with the freedom to make more informed decisions on where to look next, and be ultimately better rewarded for time spent exploring. Additionally, Commanders will have probes that can be arced onto planetary surfaces, and planetary rings, to map them in detail, locate points of interest and leave their mark on the galaxy in a new way.

New mining tools and mechanics provide a fresh, potentially lucrative mining experience for all Elite Dangerous Commanders. The combination of roguelike elements, like permanent death and procedurally-generated levels, permanent character unlockables and top-down real-time action will throw players into a challenging survival mission. Starbreeze Reorganizing; CEO Leaves

Starbreeze AB announces they have filed for reconstruction as they seek to avoid bankruptcy amid "a shortage of liquidity" (thanks Gamasutra). They anticipate a cash shortfall next month, admitting that Overkill's The Walking Dead is underperforming at retail, so they are buying time to "negotiate a long-term financial solution and implement changes in the organization and operations." The announcement includes word that Bo Andersson is stepping down as CEO and that both Andersson and Kristofer Arwin have resigned from the Starbreeze Board of Directors. Here are the details:

Starbreeze AB (publ) (“Starbreeze” or the “Company”) announces that the board of Starbreeze AB (publ) and the boards of the Company’s Swedish subsidiaries Starbreeze Publishing, Starbreeze Production, Starbreeze Studios, Enterspace and Enterspace International, have today filed for reconstruction with the Stockholm District Court. The decision is based on a shortage of liquidity and deemed to be a necessary step to give the Company the time needed to negotiate a long-term financial solution and implement changes in the organization and operations. The financial targets for Q4 2018 and 2020 no longer applies.

As communicated on 23 November 2018, the board of directors has mandated executive management to review operation and the company has initiated a program to lower costs and focus on its core business. However, with the latest statistics from Overkill’s The Walking Dead (including effects from latest marketing efforts) affecting the forecasted sales, it has reduced the short term forecasted revenue resulting in an expected shortfall of cash in January 2019.

The reconstruction framework will include salaries to employees of Starbreeze and operations will continue as usual. During the reconstruction period, no payments can be made to suppliers for services or goods relating to the period prior to the date of filing for reconstruction. Suppliers will be paid for services and goods provided during the reconstruction period. As also announced today, Bo Andersson will leave his position as CEO. Bo Andersson and Kristofer Arwin have further resigned from Starbreeze Board of Directors effective immediately. Reconstruction would not entail any other changes to the management or the Board of the company of the Company who will continue to be responsible for its operation.

“This gem has been hidden from the world long enough, and we are extremely proud to be the ones who introduce this classic to a new generation of players.”, said Akseli Jylhä-Ollila, the CEO of Rat Crew Studios. “The industry is alive and well in Finland, but there’s a gaping hole where fantasy RPGs should be. We’re here to fix that!”

Based on the works of award winning illustrator, Petri Hiltunen, Broken is set in the grim, dark fantasy world of Jaconia - the only surviving fraction of an ancient super civilization. Players will assume the role of a Praedor, a title given to adventurers who choose to risk their lives and face the horrors of a post-apocalyptic world in search of treasure.

Praedor is the best selling sword and sorcery fantasy franchise of Finland. In addition to the original graphic novels, the IP consists of a tabletop RPG and a multitude of novels written by various authors.

Out of the Blue

Today is the first day of Hanukkah, as the festival of lights began last night at sundown, and continues until sundown one week from today. Happy Chanukah to all who are celebrating. See how I found a clever way to use both preferred spellings there?

Also, here's a Fundraiser by Walter Costinak, the artist also known as "2" who created the logo for this site and many other sites and games through the years. Walter's son recently had his bank account hacked on top of other financial issues the family is working through, and this is a chance for those in a position to help to do so.
