Defiance 2050 Launches

Defiance 2050 is now officially live on Steam, offering this multiplayer shooter revival for Windows, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions also available on their respective consoles. A headstart began for founders on Friday, but now is available to all as a free-to-play game. The announcement helps understand the changes since the original Defiance launched as a television tie-in:

Trion Worlds is excited to reveal that Defiance 2050, a reimagining of Trion’s hit sci-fi online shooter Defiance, is launching today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. The updated game brings the experience to new consoles with updated visuals and gameplay enhancements, as well as all-new class and upgrade systems.

The original Defiance revolutionized the sci-fi open-world shooter, seamlessly blending third-person gunplay, fast-paced action, dynamic world events, and cooperative gameplay. In the Defiance universe, players will become Ark Hunters, mercenaries battling their way across the post-apocalyptic landscapes of a ruined earth, using alien tech and advanced weaponry to carve out their fortune while uniting with other alien races to take on common threats.

The definitive Defiance experience, Defiance 2050 is focused on bringing the game into the current generation. In addition to taking advantage of modern hardware to improve the original game’s visuals, Defiance 2050 also makes major updates to Defiance’s gameplay systems, streamlining and modernizing them for today’s shooter audience.

While the game is free to play and download, players will be able to purchase launch packs for the game that will unlock additional classes and upgrades, as well as provide in-game currency. For more information on the available packs, please visit the official Defiance 2050 blog: http://www.trionworlds.com/defiance/en/?p=6654.

Dig or Die Officially Surfaces

Dig or Die is now out of early access on Steam, offering the official release of this side-scrolling action/RPG inspired by Terraria. This trailer shows off the latest version of the game, which is on sale for the first week. The release announcement further discusses what's new in version 1.0:

French independent game development studio Gaddy Games is proud to announce today that after three years of development, Dig or Die, the Sci-fi sandbox survival strategy game, is now available on Steam in its full release. To date, Dig or Die is supported by a community strong of 160,000 users and landed a 91% very positive review score on its Steam page. Dig or Die full release is available today for $11.99 in the US and £9.29 in the UK.

Dig or Die is a one of a kind sandbox game blending strategy elements, wrapped around a deep living and breathing habitat, constantly changing under the effects of dynamic weather circumstances. Survival and defense gameplay mechanics have been implemented to offer players a unique experience where their crafting and building skills become key to overcome the world natural obstacles and preserve themselves against the attacks from the native creatures inhabiting the hostile surroundings. In creative mode, available tools enable players to landscape new terrains, create water, lava, monsters, grow plants instantly and absorb liquids.

With a very distinct art style and a robust building system, Dig or Die stands out as a very unique sandbox game. As employee of CRAFT & Co., a space exploration agency, your latest contract has gone awry and you find yourself stranded on a distant planet. Your objective is to establish a base and accumulate resources in order to build a spaceship and find your way back home. When the daylight fades, however, you’ll have to fight back massive hordes of monsters who just like you, don’t take kindly to unwanted intruders. You will build your defenses, create barricades and turrets to protect yourself against your opponents.

In addition to the current game’s version features, the full release will include 3 brand new game modes (Under the Sea, Sky World, Base Defense) and 16 random environmental events such as earthquakes, rain flood or meteor showers, happening once a day and directly impacting gameplay. Gaddy Games also expanded the soundtrack selection with 9 new tracks.

Far Cry 5: Lost on Mars Next Week

Ubisoft announces July 17th is when you can find Lost on Mars, the next DLC pack for Far Cry 5, their first-person shooter sequel. This is being offered separately (though Far Cry 5 is required), or as the second release in the game's season pass. The teaser trailer offers a hand-animated cinematic and a glimpse of gameplay. The announcement fills in the details, and also includes a bit on the next DLC release:

Today, Ubisoft announced Far Cry® 5: Lost on Mars, the second post-launch adventure, will release July 17 on available platforms. Lost on Mars continues the uncanny adventures in the Far Cry 5 Season Pass as players travel to Mars to eradicate an alien threat. Lost on Mars can be purchased as a stand-alone DLC for $9.99, as part of the season pass for $29.99 or the Gold Edition for $89.99.

Lost on Mars transports the franchise’s insanity from Hope County to the red planet as Nick Rye is teleported to a hostile planet to help his buddy Hurk thwart an alien invasion of Earth. This adventure gives players a new arsenal of alien weaponry, including the Blaster of Disaster, Hellfire and Morphinator, while also introducing a new traversal tool with Space Jets. Humankind’s future is in the hands of the game’s most notorious guns-for-hire. Time to squash some bugs!

In addition, all Far Cry 5 players will have access to new Mars-themed assets in Far Cry Arcade, available now. Map builders will be able to integrate these assets into their existing maps or create new sci-fi-themed maps. Future content will also include thematic assets that will be added to Far Cry Arcade for free. Those who download the Lost on Mars DLC will also gain access to new weapons – Obliteratorrrr, Taser Phazer Annihilazer, Nerve Reaper, Grape Popper and Hellfire – to use as they liberate Hope County from the Project at Eden’s Gate.

Far Cry 5 post-launch will continue with a final DLC adventure – Dead Living Zombies – which will be released in August. An additional asset drop will give map builders more tools to create unique Far Cry Arcade experiences. The adventures are available in the season pass or as stand-alone DLC purchases, while new asset releases for Far Cry Arcade will be available for free to all players in future title updates.

IDGA Urges Social Media Guidelines After ArenaNet Firings

The recent firing of two ArenaNet writers over Twitter exchanges prompts the International Game Developers Association to step up with a blog post from their executive director strongly urging that members clarify guidelines for social media use for both professional and personal accounts (thanks PC Gamer). Here's a bit:

Two ArenaNet employees were recently fired because of their interactions with community members on social media. This incident makes very clear the perils of social media for game developers, especially when transparent and well-understood guidelines for staff members are not in place. Often, game developers love engaging with their player base, and the interactions can be very helpful for both the developers and players. However, without clear information from an employer on social media use, interacting with people as a game developer can jeopardize someone’s job and career, and even their personal safety.

The IGDA strongly encourages its members, both as individuals and as studios and partners, to clarify the guidelines and expectations around social media use, both in professional and personal accounts.

Game developers are also frequently targeted for harassment, particularly if they are members of under-represented communities. Companies must plan for how they will support their staff members in the event of online harassment, and should clearly communicate the resources they will make available to their team to have safe, productive, and positive interactions online, especially if they are expected to do so in their roles.

LawBreakers Failure Helped Kill The Amazing Eternals

The failure of Boss Key's LawBreakers contributed to Digital Extremes' decision to put The Amazing Eternals "on hold" last year, reports PCGamesN based on a discussion with the developer. That was not the sole reason they walked away from the hero shooter, as they also realized they needed to devote more resources to their Plains of Eidolon expansion for Warframe. But the LawBreakers situation definitely impacted their thinking. "A lot of things were converging at the same time then and what we realised was that it was the right game at the wrong time," VP of publishing Meridith Braun explains. "The competitive landscape at that time was pretty hefty. We just saw LawBreakers not do so great, and it was a fantastic game, so that was sad. That happened right when we were starting our closed beta for Amazing Eternals."

It is amazing to see that the rest of those kids and their coach got rescued from that cave in Thailand. With how bad the news was at times, that they got everyone out seems like an actual miracle, and it's nice to have such genuinely uplifting news in these modern times. Op Ed

GamesIndustry.biz - ArenaNet sends all the wrong messages.
"First, to ArenaNet developers and would-be applicants: The company will not go to bat for you against the fanbase if they decide they don't like you. Your employment with the company will always be precarious. ArenaNet will not hesitate to throw you under the bus for having the audacity to be annoyed by people telling you how to do your job, or for simply sticking up for a co-worker who does the same.

To misogynist trolls: Guild Wars 2 is a welcoming place for you. Your tactics are valid and effective. Please continue harassing women and minorities out of the industry because ArenaNet doesn't want them here enough to support them when it is in any way inconvenient.

To Guild Wars 2 players: You are the most important thing to ArenaNet. What you say, goes. ArenaNet doesn't particularly care if your anger will embolden an internet hate campaign, or what horrible repercussions might come from unconditional subservience to your apparent whims. Just please stop yelling."

Steam Competitor Coming from China

South China Morning Post reports that Chinese gaming giant Tencent is planning on bringing their WeGame platform to the global audience in an attempt to compete more directly with Valve's Steam service and to create a better pipeline to distribute Chinese games in the west (thanks GamesIndustry.biz). This only seems appropriate in light of Valve's recent announcement of plans to expand Steam's reach into China. Here are some details:

Tencent Holdings, which runs the world's largest video games business by revenue, is set to launch the international version of its WeGame store and social platform in Hong Kong, with the aim to build up the overseas market for China-developed personal computer games.

WeGame, an upgrade from the previous Tencent Games Platform, went online in September last year as a Chinese-language site where users can watch live-streaming video games, access support tools for communication between players and developers, and download PC and stand-alone games.

“The Hong Kong version of WeGame is now under development,” said a spokesman for Shenzhen-based Tencent in a statement on Friday. “This version will be available for overseas users, and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the global market.”

WeGame, China’s biggest PC games distribution platform, currently offers about 220 titles available for download, including games developed overseas. Don't Starve Together, a multiplayer survival game developed by Canadian independent studio Klei Entertainment, had sold more than two million copies on WeGame by April, according to Tencent.

Worbital Beta

Worbital is a real-time strategy game which will pit players in interplanetary artillery combat when it comes to Steam later this year. Those interested in this concept have the chance to try this out right now, as this announcement reveals that a public beta is now underway. All one has to do to get invited into the beta is joint their Discord channel, though they warn that while they have a "generous" number of keys to distribute, they are not unlimited. This video offers a look at gameplay, and the announcement has details on the beta and the full game:

The public beta version of Worbital is different from the one that will be available for purchase at release, as Worbital is still work in progress. Currently it has limited weapon loadout and online multiplayer mode only. Gradually we will introduce more features into the game through regular updates. This will help keep the testing more focused on specific features at certain times. During the beta run, you can expect to see AI and Local Multiplayer modes, as well as additional weapons and a few other things. The beta will become unavailable shortly prior to the final release. After that, Worbital will only be available through purchase. More additions will come to the final game, let them remain a surprise for now.

As the testing goes on, we’ll ask you to fill in a few tester surveys for us, so we can get as much as possible useful info to improve the game. The survey forms will be shared on Discord. In addition to that, every now and then we’ll be asking you more direct questions on the #testing chat.

U.K. Sales Charts

GFK Chart-Track announces their latest charts are available to track game sales in the U.K. for the week ending Saturday. The child they love the most is their all platforms chart, of which they say, "Sold Out Sales & Marketing’s ‘Jurassic World’ has to settle for No2 on its debut, as Activision Blizzard’s ‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ holds off competition to retain the No1 spot in the Top 40 All Formats Chart." Things are pretty stable on the PC games top 30 chart except for the Overwatch GOTY Edition which pops up at number six out of nowhere and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which drops off the top 30 altogether after sitting at number eight last week. Out of the Blue

I'm happy to see that the new Ant-Man movie is getting good reviews. In spite of the obvious overload, I remain a fan of the Marvel movies. I'm still on the fence about heading out to the theater for this, because MrsBlue is refusing to attend with me, so I'd have to go solo. She's been a good sport about seeing several of these with me in the past few years, but she was too upset at the ending of Infinity Wars to soldier on any further, and no amount of reassurance that some elements of what seems so tragic will probably be undone along the way have mitigated that. So yeah, true to being a supervillain, Thanos really messed things up for me.
