Darwin Project Goes Free-to-Play

This post on Steam from Scavengers Studio creative director Simon Darveau announces that Darwin Project has evolved to become a free-to-play title. This seems like a fairly natural selection for a game looking to compete in the burgeoning Battle Royale space. They say that those who paid for the game will receive a Founder's Pack next week, and promise that Darwin Project will never become pay-to-win. Here's more:
“We’ve said from the start that we’re committed to creating a fresh and exciting experience for Darwin Project players and viewers. With features like the Show Director who serves as a master of ceremonies, Spectator Interactions that let viewers directly interact with streams, and an emphasis on tracking that ensures players are always within arm’s reach of a tense confrontation, we still believe Darwin Project offers a quality experience unlike any other battle royale game out there.

“We’ve been fortunate to have a core community of players join us at a very early stage, with many still supporting us during Early Access, and the last thing we want to do is let those passionate players down. Lately, members of our community have reported longer queue times and difficulty finding matches in lesser populated servers. To bring in new players and maintain a level of activity that ensures players are able to get the most of out Darwin Project, we’ve decided to make it more accessible by removing the price tag.

“We’re aware that it’s a big change, and we want to reiterate that we’re remaining true to Darwin Project’s vision as we move forward.”

DEAD DOZEN Free Weekend

DEAD DOZEN is another game that's free-to-play this weekend on Steam (thanks Ant). This is a multiplayer action/horror game for Windows that's currently working through the early access process that just recently got an update adding support for a bunch of additional languages. Here's a trailer showing off gameplay, and here's a bit on the game:
In 1993 a strange group of 12 people is entrapped by mysterious force inside the abandoned Soviet research base deep in Siberia...

DEAD DOZEN is a Multiplayer Action Horror Game where you turn into a ghoul after your death as a human. Loot, barricade and cooperate when you play as a Survivor or infiltrate, infect and eat your former human friends when you play as a Ghoul.

In DEAD DOZEN Escape you have to beat the various challenges and defeat AI-controlled enemies alone or with a few friends in your quest to escape from the depths of the mysterious pyramid in the heart of Siberia.

Star Citizen Celebrates 2M Backers

Letter from the Chairman on the Roberts Space Industries Website celebrates Star Citizen backing the two-million backer threshold. As of this writing, the game now boasts 2,024,055 backers who have now contributed $183,398,113 USD to the space game crowdfunding project, and they are offering special badges and in-game t-shirts to help players celebrate when they joined the cult. Cloud Imperium also offers an updated roadmap with a look at release plans for the rest of the year, which starts with a lengthy list of caveats about how inaccurate these may possibly be. Spoiler alert: None of this covers plans for Star Citizen or Squadron 42 to leave the alpha stage yet. Here's a bit:
As Star Citizen has continued to grow over the years, so has the community in just as many astonishing and encouraging ways. The backers remain the foundation of this project and a beacon to the entire gaming industry and beyond. You are proving that PC games, space sims, and a willingness to push these artforms into new realms of innovation are alive and well, with more exciting possibilities than ever before. With two million people (and counting) inspiring and counting on us, the Star Citizen team is more galvanized than ever in our efforts. We’re listening to what you want out of Star Citizen and working to get more amazing content and mechanics into the game, while also pouring resources and focus into quality of life improvements and polishing current features, to make it a satisfying experience, even while still in Alpha. It’s your belief in the project, from the earliest backers to those relatively new to the ‘verse, that make it all possible.

Opinion: Twitch Is Seriously Hurting Single Player Games - IGN Video.
"During PAX East this year, IGN spoke to a number of developers about the idea that single player games are dying, and why that might be happening. Every single one of them mentioned content creation."

Out of the Blue

I'm feeling surprisingly better today after my recent battle with a cold. On Thursday I was suffering pretty badly, and needed to lean on decongestants to keep on truckin'. So it was pretty weird to be able to avoid the cold meds yesterday and still be able to breathe properly, as that seems like an extra-quick turnaround. I definitely got fatigued walking the dogs, but that was no big deal. I feel almost 100% today, for which I am quite surprised and grateful.
