Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Delayed

Obsidian announces a new May 8th deadline for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, saying they are taking a few extra weeks to polish their RPG sequel for a signature bug-free release (okay we added that last part, which may be an exaggeration). Here's word:

We know you're as excited as we are about the upcoming launch of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. As you have probably guessed, Deadfire is a huge game -- significantly larger than the original Pillars of Eternity. Obsidian has been working harder than Abydon himself to make every inch of it awesome, as well as incorporating all the great feedback we have been getting from everyone playing the Backer Beta.

With this in mind, we are taking just a few extra weeks to polish and put those finishing touches on the game.

Our new launch date will be Tuesday, May 8th, 2018. To tide you over until then, you can look forward to plenty of Deadfire-related news and content coming in the weeks and months ahead.

See you all soon in the Deadfire!

V-Rally 4 Announced

Kylotonn and Bigben announce V-Rally 4, a new installment in the V-Rally series of off-road racing games that began over 20 years ago. Word is this is coming to PC and consoles in September, and they offer this announcement trailer to show off what they're working on. Here's word:

Bigben Interactive and Kylotonn Racing Games today announced their collaboration on the return of the ultimate off-road simulation: V-Rally. Developed by Kylotonn Racing Games, a French studio specializing in racing simulations such as WRC 7 and TT Isle of Man, V-Rally 4 invites players to experience the extreme sensations of the most insane races.

Absent since 2003, the epic title is now making its big comeback with more than 50 models of emblematic rallying and extreme motorsports vehicles. Nostalgic players can collect, upgrade, customize, and master the favorite cars, three of which can be seen in today's trailer - a Porsche 911 Safari, a Ford Mustang and a Ford Fiesta RS RX.

V-Rally was first released in 1997 on PlayStation 1, revolutionizing the genre with 3 game modes and a selection of real-world vehicles and famous tracks. Some years later, on PlayStation 2, V-Rally 3 released to huge success, adding a career mode with decisive team choices and an even greater number of tracks.

With V-Rally 4, the goal is to remain faithful to the identity of the franchise, which earned the support of millions of fans, and to strike a perfect balance between sensation, presentation, and simulation, while offering the best graphics and gameplay the latest technology can support.

"It's a real privilege for me to once again work on the V-Rally series," said Alain Jarniou, Game Director at Kylotonn. "It's an extraordinary title that I have a very special connection to. I had a chance to join the team that created V-Rally to develop V-Rally 3 on the PlayStation 2 as a programmer. I'm very proud to be working on the franchise again 15 years later."

V-Rally 4 features:

  • Rally: From Africa to Sequoia Park and Japan, travel the world along difficult tracks and in extreme conditions, such as snow, ice, and mud.
  • Extreme-Khana: You'll have to be a master of precision and drifting on these tracks full of pitfalls.
  • V-Rally Cross: Leave your opponents in the dust on these dirt and asphalt tracks and take on 7 expert adversaries.
  • Buggy: Hop into your all-terrain vehicle to win the race on these particularly rugged tracks. Not for the faint of heart!
  • Hillclimb: Race to the top behind the wheel of powerful cars.

You can also prove yourself in V-Rally 4's Online and Career modes.

V-Rally 4 will be available September 2018 on PlayStation®4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch™ and PC.

Spellsworn's F2P Launch

Spellsworn is out of Early Access on Steam, offering the official launch of this Windows and macOS MOBA. This is marked by the release of new content as well as the promised transition to a free-to-play model. "We drew inspiration from the WarCraft 3 custom mod, Warlocks, taking the fighting element of the game and building the whole Spellsworn experience around it," said Stefan Jonsson, CEO of Frogsong Studios. "It will appeal to those players who like quick skill-based fighting matches without the hassle of managing the economic side of the game. So jump into the Spellsworn arena and brawl away!" You can get a look at the game in action in this release trailer, and here are more details:

Along with the free to play launch, developers have released new content, including three new spells and over 10 cosmetic items. Plus, for the next seven days players can enjoy a x2 drop chance as part of the increased loot drop event. New players will soon be able to purchase the Collector’s Edition in order to get two Legendary Skins and two Legendary Staffs, while Early Access supporters will automatically get the Collector’s Edition and the Founder’s Edition, containing two additional Legendary items, exclusive to pre-launch players. Also, this weekend (March 18th) players can participate in a 2v2 tournament on Overpowered Noobs to win special prizes. Visit http://opnoobs.com/e4i/spellsworn for more information.

In Spellsworn, players rely upon tactics and quick reflexes to outsmart and obliterate opponents, using a well thought out combination of spells across different disciplines. Players battle it out in teams or free-for-all over intense five-round matches for up to eight players. Between each round, the magic arsenal can be customized by trading or upgrading spells to switch up strategy and mess with the minds of rival wizards. The magic mayhem reaches another level once the hazardous environment begins wreaking havoc on the playable field, causing damage over time to each player pushed off of the arena. With an ever-changing environment that poses as much of a threat as the enemy, adaptation is just as important as a quick hand and mind.

Downward Spiral: Horus Station Video Diary

This video offers a developer diary for Downward Spiral: Horus Station, an upcoming sci-fi thriller set aboard an abandoned space station. The clip features the game's sound designer discussing the importance of audio cues in a game that is "ostensibly dialogue-free." Oddly, the clip features English subtitles, in spite of being in English to begin with. Here's the accompanying word:

Finnish development studio, 3rd Eye Studios, is treating expectant players to another look inside the high-concept, sci-fi world of Downward Spiral: Horus Station. In the accompanying dev diary, 3rd Eye Studios introduce Can Uzer, the game’s sound designer, who describes the challenges and creative decisions underpinning Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s audio.

For a game ostensibly dialogue-free, sound plays a huge role in crafting atmosphere and directing narrative. Uzer talks us through the team’s desire to create an “analogue” and “utilitarian” soundscape, one that aligns the game with the canon of classic sci-fi including Solaris, Alien, and Moon. The air pressure of hydraulic mechanisms fizz and whir while the Bolt Pistol is an industrial tool transformed into a makeshift weapon, combining the audio characteristics of both.

Out of the Blue

Welp, it's snowing again outside the BlueTower, as Winter Storm Skylar is here, out third nor'easter in 10 days. I'm not sure if that's unprecedented, but it feels that way. The good news is that this storm seems far milder than the last two, around here at least. As I shovel, I'll take solace in the fact that Friday marks exactly six weeks since Groundhog Day, so apparently spring is upon us. I'll contemplate that as I'm thawing out.
