PUBG China Cheating Backlash Heats Up

This announcement on Steam informs PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS players how they will be compensated for the mess-up in distributing BP following the launch of version 1.0 of the battle royale shooter. As noted on PC Gamer, the vocal response to this (well over 4000 comments as of this writing) mostly focuses on cheating, and what can be done about it. Ground zero for this attention is China, which was long ago singled out as the source of the "vast majority" of cheating in the game. The thread has become in part a concerted effort to draw attention to a Change.org petition asking that China be region locked. Thanks RedEye9.

Stellaris Apocalypse Announced

Paradox Interactive announces Stellaris Apocalypse, a new expansion for Stellaris expected to launch for the space exploration game early this year. This will add Space Marauders, Planetary Destruction Weapons (I have a bad feeling about this), and presumably the apocalypse, and they offer a look at what to expect in this trailer. Here's the announcement:

Paradox Interactive, a publisher and developer of games that were bound to get us all killed eventually, today announced the newest full expansion coming to Stellaris, the sci-fi grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studio. The expansion, which bears the hope-inspiring title “Apocalypse,” will bring new levels of warfare and destruction to the galactic exploration and discovery game, and will add many new ways to extend one’s galactic dominion – including the ability to destroy entire enemy planets. Apocalypse will bring new military options, civic paths, and challenges to Stellaris when it arrives in early 2018 for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs.

Stellaris: Apocalypse redefines stellar warfare for all players with a host of new offensive and defensive options, alongside a few non-violent new features for those poor, unsuspecting empires not currently at war. Alongside a host of free updates coming to Stellaris, the new Apocalypse DLC will include:

  • That’s No Moon, neither is That One, That One Might be a Moon, Wait, No: Keep the local systems in line with fear of the new “Colossus” planet-killer weapon – a technological terror that eliminates entire worlds from the universe.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to You: New enormous “Titan” capital ships can lead your fleets to conquest, offering tremendous bonuses to the vessels under their command. Meanwhile, fortify key systems with massive orbital installations and secure your homeworld as an impenetrable bastion among the stars.
  • Pirates of the Constellation: Watch out for Marauders – space nomads who raid settled empires and carve out their lives on the fringe of civilization. Hire them as mercenaries in your own conflicts, but take care that they don’t unify and trigger a new late-game crisis!
  • Some Non-Violent Features: New Ascension Perks and Civics are added in the expansion, along with new Unity Ambitions that provide new ways to spend Unity and customize your development.

Space Invaders Extreme Coming to Steam

TAITO Corp announces Space Invaders Extreme, a return to the seminal arcade game expected on Steam next month. This remake demands the joke that it isn't your grandfather's Space Invaders, but the original launched in 1978, so two full generations have indeed passed since then. In fact, the Extreme version came to portables in 2008, so it's already half a generation old itself. The new teaser trailer is a nothingburger, though it also teases Groove Coaster is coming to Steam this year as well, but there are loads of gameplay videos such as this one from other platforms. League of Legends 2018 Season Next Week

Riot announces the 2018 season for League of Legends will get underway on January 16th. Here are the details:

Ranked
As in previous seasons, your rank will be soft-reset at the start of the season: Your new rank will be based off of both your existing MMR and your performance in 10 placement games.

In Challenger tier, we’re removing the solo-only restriction in Ranked Solo/Duo. We saw that Challenger players were facing Master tier duos pretty regularly, which ends up making the queue less competitive overall (despite the original intention back in 2016), and also punishes duos on the upper echelons of Master for winning too hard. We’ll be monitoring how much this impacts the health of the queue over the coming weeks.

In addition to your tier, ranked rewards will have a requirement of Honor level 2 or above at the end of this season.

Honor
Like ranked, Honor resets with the season start as well. Honor level 3, 4, and 5 players get a scaling head start, and you can learn all the details over here. After that, it’s up to you to fight with Honor on your way up the ladder.

2018’s Honor rewards start at Honor level 3.

… and more
When the new season starts, you can once more earn Hextech chests for each champion by getting an S- or higher champion mastery rank in-game.

You're definitely gonna want to do your placements early and stay Honor level 2 or above so you can participate in our new tournament experience, Clash.

Rainswept Demo

The Rainswept website is home to an indie murder mystery game featuring stylized graphics that's coming to Windows, macOS, and Linux this year (thanks Rock, Paper, Shotgun via RedEye9). Word is: "RAINSWEPT is an adventure game - A murder mystery dealing with themes of love, relationships and unresolved trauma. The focus is on delivering an emotional story, tied together with charming art style, characters with deep histories, and a moving soundtrack." They offer this announce trailer, which strongly suggests this was inspired by Twin Peaks, and there's already a playable demo on itch.io. Here's more on the game:

Detective Michael Anderson enters the small town of Pineview to assist the local police force with a seemingly simple case - A couple is found dead in their kitchen. The locals believe it to be case of murder-suicide, their speculation fueled by rumors of the turbulent nature of the couple's relationship.

Is it just idle gossip, or is there some truth to the rumors?

Help Detective Anderson, assisted by the driven and empathetic Officer Blunt, discover the truth behind Chris and Diane's story. But be warned: the further he pursues the case, the more his own past shall come back to haunt him. And the closer his own sanity will be pushed to the edge.

The announcement trailer shows this off, including a look at alpha gameplay, and they say that they are moving towards a public alpha, promising access to all who sign up on the Outpost Zero website. Prince of Persia Revival Sought

In a response to a question on twitter from de-motivational speaker Christine Teigen about the status of the Prince of Persia franchise, creator Jordan Mechner reveals he is working behind-the-scenes towards another revival of the action/adventure series (thanks GameSpot). Word is:

Chrissy, I know a few other people who feel the same way. We’re doing our best to make it happen!

Dark Souls Remastered for PCs?

Nintendo announces Dark Souls Remastered, a new update of FromSoftware's action/RPG coming to Nintendo Switch on May 25th (thanks GameSpot). This was announced through a Nintendo Direct mini-presentation, hence the Switch focus, but according to Kotaku UK, in a few hours it will be announced that this is also coming to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Here is the currently unconfirmed plan they say they heard from BANDAI NAMCO:

These ports are being handled by a separate company from the Switch port, and will feature rebuilt lighting and SFX based on Dark Souls 3, as well as upscaled textures. One change we've been made aware of is that multiplayer will be expanded to support six concurrent players, which makes sense if the goal is to get Dark Souls' covenant system working a little more smoothly.

DUSK Early Access

DUSK is now available in Early Access on Steam, offering the first-person shooter for Windows. This trailer offers a look at DUSK's fast-paced gameplay and retro graphics, which are inspired by the classics of the early 90s such as QUAKE and HERETIC. The Early Access version launches with two episodes, and a third episode is on the way, and this post from a couple of weeks ago outlines their plans to move towards an official release, which will also include macOS and Linux support. Here's word:

The gleefully violent Early Access release of DUSK includes Episode 1, which has received fan praise and media acclaim for its quick action and unapologetic homages to the mid-nineties FPS genre, and introduces Episode 2 for the first time. In addition to the campaign episodes and endless survival mode, the Early Access release also now includes the open beta run of DUSKWorld, the multiplayer component of DUSK - so you can shoot your friends in the face with double barreled shotguns.

New Blood assures fans that the game will not linger in Early Access any longer than it has to, and have a complete, lengthy and semi-entertaining FAQ here for any players with questions or concerns: http://steamcommunity.com/games/519860/announcements/detail/1587947907202018531

DUSK transports players into and underneath the creepy backwoods of the American Northeast where you wake up hanging on a meat hook and must escape using any means necessary (dual sickles in this case). In this Quake-meets-Cabin-In-The-Woods retro FPS , you'll encounter an onslaught of mystical backwater cultists, possessed militants and even darker forces as you attempt to discover just what lurks beneath the Earth as things get deeper and darker.

Still to come in Early Access over the coming weeks is Episode 3, Endless Arena 3, achievements, trading cards, leaderboards and more.

New Blood has also laid out plans for the game's post-launch, which includes The DAWN SDK, Steam Workshop support, co-op, plus Mac and Linux versions of the game.

And probably other stuff too. Even a big box physical collector's edition. Nice.

This trailer has the strategy portion, while this one shows off the shooter elements. And for those interested in picking up a copy on the cheap, the game is currently part of top tier in the Humble Hope for Orphans Bundle. Here's more of a refresher on the game:

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Announced

Publisher SEGA and developer Creative Assembly announce Total War: Three Kingdoms, a new installment in the strategy series coming to PCs this fall via Steam. This will feature gameplay set in ancient China, as depicted in this announcement cinematic which uses the typical shouty naming convention of the series, showing the title as Total War: THREE KINGDOMS. Here's the announcement, which uses the more understated upper/lowercase:

SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the new historical strategy game Total War™: Three Kingdoms, the next major historical title in the Total War™ strategy series from Creative Assembly™, and the first to explore ancient China, will launch in Fall 2018.

It is 190CE and China is in turmoil. The Han Dynasty crumbles before the child-emperor, who is a mere puppet for the tyrant Dong Zhuo. The brutal and oppressive regime's power grows as the empire slips further into anarchy. Yet hope blossoms in the form of three heroes, sworn to brotherhood in the face of calamity. Warlords of great families follow suit, forming a fragile coalition in a bid to challenge Dong Zhuo's remorseless rule. The future of China will be shaped by their hands, but personal ambition threatens their already crumbling alliance.

Inspired by the beauty and artistic style of the age, Total War™: Three Kingdoms breathes life into the heroes of this fascinating period as they struggle to unite China under a single banner.

Cyberpunk 2077 Tweet

A tweet from Cyberpunk Game is causing a stir, even though it simply says "*beep*." The reason such a message would generate 11,000+ retweets and 29,000+ likes (as of this writing) is that the most recent activity from Twitter account for Cyberpunk 2077 before this was in December 2013. CD Projekt RED started talking a bit about their long-in-development RPG around the end of last year, so this may be a sign of more communication to come.

Battalion 1944 Beta Next Week; Early Access Next Month

This page is accepting signups from those interested in beta testing Battalion 1944 next week, as they gear up to launch Early Access to the military first-person shooter on February 1st. Those who backed or preordered the game are guaranteed access, while everyone else has to take their chances. Here's word:

Having set out on a mission to reignite the spirit of the old-school shooter, Bulkhead Interactive and Square Enix Collective are both proud and excited to announce Battalion 1944 is heading for Early Access on Thursday 1st February.

Derby-based studio Bulkhead Interactive, which previously developed The Turing Test, has created an experience designed to both capture and build upon the close combat mastered by FPS games in the early 90s. With the genre having since shifted direction, Bulkhead took to Kickstarter to bring together a community of gamers eager to jump back into the old-school multiplayer arena.

Now Battalion 1944 is ready to entertain its loyal following, with the studio coupling this announcement with the launch of a brand new worldwide reveal trailer, both setting the scene for the WW2 inspired action ahead and featuring actual gameplay from the latest build.

“It feels good to get Battalion 1944 into the hands of gamers after working on it so hard,” says Joe Brammer - Studio Lead at Bulkhead Interactive. “We’ve been testing the game behind closed doors with our Kickstarter backers. It’s now time for us to extend our testing to Early Access to help what I believe can one of the best competitive FPS games ever.”

Ahead of this, Bulkhead Interactive will also be running an exclusive beta of Battalion 1944. Kicking off from Friday January 19th through to Sunday January 21st. For a chance to take part, head on over to beta.battaliongame.com. Any Kickstarter or Humble Bundle backers will automatically gain access to the beta, with streaming and content creation using the beta allowed.

New SteelSeries Rival Mouse Features Dual-Optical Sensors

SteelSeries unveils a new Rival 600 mouse at CES, boasting this exclusively features their new TrueMove3+ sensor system. Besides the sexy name (which thankfully invokes neither birds of prey nor dinosaurs), they say TrueMove3+ features a dual-optical sensor set-up with one sensor dedicated to mouse liftoff, leading to less jitter, and the lowest lift-off distance ever achieved. They already have these for sale on the SteelSeries Website, where there's a commercial you can inflict on yourself which offers a stylized look at the product, redeemed by the presence of poop emojis and the line, "do you even lift bro?" This is a right-handed-only mouse, which also boasts lights and weights. Here's more:

The TrueMove3+ Sensor: Two Sensors – Next Level Precision
The Rival 600 is the most precise and customizable mouse that gives gamers unmatched precision and increased accuracy. The TrueMove3+ combines the first true 1-to-1 tracking sensor with a second Pixart sensor exclusively tracking the liftoff distance.

The TrueMove3 is a 12,000 CPI, 350 IPS optical sensor that SteelSeries built with sensor industry leader, PixArt. Its ultra-low-latency, rapid-response tracking delivers the most natural and accurate mouse movement. Unlike other mouse sensors bogged down with inefficient jitter reduction and tracking latency, TrueMove 3's 1-to-1 tracking from 100 to 12,000 CPI delivers true esports performance. The TrueMove3 was first introduced with the Rival 310 and Sensei 310 gaming mice. The custom-engineered TrueMove3 SROM dramatically reduces response time and greatly increases accuracy.

The second sensor allows gamers to adjust their lift-off distance like never before. Gamers can customize when the sensor stops and starts tracking when the mouse is lifted off its mat. This eliminates extra movement when gamers pick up and put down their mouse. The second sensor also features linear optical detection for true depth perception for the world’s most precise lift-off detection down to 0.5mm.

Out of the Blue

The relief from the recent spate of extreme winter weather is almost as shocking as the cold itself was. In the past couple of days we went from temps around 0ºF to the thirties, which is nothing compared to the fifty-degree range we're told to expect on Friday and Saturday. Friday's forecast is a real blessing, as after driving salted northeastern roads for the past few weeks, 55ºF and rainy qualifies as an automated car wash. Hope things are being equally cooperative where you are.
