Killing Floor 2 Free Weekend

Another free weekend is underway on Steam for Killing Floor 2, Tripwire's zombie shooter sequel (thanks Ant). Their last free weekend ended just a couple of weeks ago, and while they touted that event with a prominent announcement, this new free weekend is presented without any news stories or other fanfare. Killing Floor 2 is also on sale right now for half-off, and here's a refresher on the game that may pique your interest:

In KILLING FLOOR 2, players descend into continental Europe where the outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has quickly spread and gained unstoppable momentum, essentially paralyzing the European Union— Just one month after the events in the original KILLING FLOOR, the specimen clones are everywhere and civilization is in disarray; communications have failed, governments have collapsed, and military forces have been systematically eradicated. The people of Europe know survival and self-preservation too well and lucky survivors have gone into hiding.

Not all have given up hope though... A group of civilians and mercenaries have banded together to combat the outbreak and established privately funded operation bases across Europe. Upon tracking specimen clone outbreaks, players will descend into zed-laden hot zones and exterminate them.

Global Adventures Launches

Steam News announces Global Adventures is now available on Steam, offering a Windows MMORPG from Suba Games. This post has more details, calling this a closed beta, but the game is free-to-play, so it's hard to see the distinction they are drawing. Here's word on the game:

Global Adventures is an MMORPG for Windows PCs. As a newly recruited agent for the Treasure Hunters Association, you must travel the world conquering dungeons, digging up treasure, and taking down bosses with your friends!

Survarium Holiday Update

This Steam post announces a new map, a new game mode, and a holiday celebration is now live in Survarium, updating the early access Windows survival game. Here are the details:

Holiday Season has begun, and to celebrate we introduced a special game mode on a new map Olivier Mall! Play matches in the Gun Race game mode, receive holiday currency (snowflakes, pine trees and stars) and exchange it for the weapons with unique holiday camos! The higher you place after a match, the more currency you get!

Gun Race is all-versus-all game mode, so every other player will try to frag you. Before each match an equipment tier (from 1 to 5) is randomly selected, and a list of this tier's weapons is generated. Every player starts the match with the first weapon on the list. Eliminate opponents to get the next weapon on the list. Melee kills let you advance through the list faster, but if someone kills you in melee, you roll back to the previous weapon on the list. The player to make the kill with the last weapon on the list wins.

Even though the weapons on the list are random, the last two ones are always a snowball and an icicle. The snowballs kills a character with 100 HP in two hits, and the icicle one shots, but it can damage only in melee. Since you need to make a kill with an icicle to win the match and can attack only in melee, we hope the battles will be pretty intense as the players with weapons will kill the players with snowballs and icicles more easily!

You can exchange the Holiday currency for the Benelli M4 (tier 3), PP-19-01 (tier 4) and A-545 (tier 5). These Holiday weapons have unique camos and already have all their module slots unlocked. Also the weapons provide a bonus to spare part gain: +7%, +10% and +15% correspondingly. Participate in the Holiday event in Survarium, play in the new game mode and receive weapons with unique camos!

PUBG Passes 3M CCUs

The remarkable success story of PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS continues to add new chapters (thanks DSOGaming). The Steam Game and Player Statistics page now shows the battle royale shooter has annihilated its own record for concurrent users on Steam. About a month ago the game had just shy of 2.8 million users playing at once, and now the record stands at 3,106,358. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

CCP Job Listing Hints MMORPG Plans

Just a couple of months ago CCP announced they were dropping virtual reality development amid layoffs. Now there's a more positive omen in this job listing for their London studio suggesting a new project is in the works at the Icelandic developer (thanks Rock, Paper, Shotgun). This is for an MMORPG they describe as "highly ambitious," and while they only go into so much detail, there are some hints about the plan in the listing, including a mention of "economy and balance modelling," and job requirements including leading at least one systems heavy game, "fantastic" knowledge of the MMORPG genre, and Unreal Engine 4 experience. Here's word:

CCP is currently building a team in London to lead development on a new and highly ambitious MMORPG. We are looking to grow a relatively small, tight-knit team, capable of delivering big ideas through experience, smart process, and world-class tools.

We are looking for a new Lead Designer to join this growing team, responsible for leading a small team of experienced designers in the development and execution of our game design. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track-record of leading design teams on multiple high-profile titles, and ideally experience of RPG gameplay and systems design development.

  • Responsibie for the successful implementation of all features.
  • Line-management, guidance and mentoring of the wider design team.
  • Collaboration with the Art Director to ensure best-in-class user experience.

  • Shipped a minimum of 1 game title as a Lead Designer or Design Director on a high-profile MMO, RPG or other systems heavy game.
  • Demonstrable track-record of managing and mentoring a game design team.
  • Solid understanding of game design process and methodology.

  • A demonstrable analytical and iterative approach to solving design problems.
  • Strong organizational skills and experience of establishing enduring processes.
  • Ability to balance the impacts of deadlines and resources with creative and quality requirements.
  • Strong time management skills with a proven ability to focus on priorities and meet deadline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with executive level staff on a broad range of topics, and convey complex ideas to audiences of varying design expertise.
  • Comfortable getting hands-on where necessary in design documentation tasks.
  • Experience with the UE4 engine and blueprints is a real plus.

HuffPost - World Health Organization’s Junk Diagnosis For 'Gaming Disorder' Trivializes Mental Illness.
"The WHO’s proposal has been in the works for a couple of years and has already generated controversy among scholars in the field. One group of 28 scholars wrote an open letter regarding the WHO’s proposal, criticizing it for lack of scientific support, lack of transparency, and failure to adequately consider the clinical harms and human rights concerns of the proposed diagnosis. Some scholars certainly support the WHO’s efforts, but they may be in the minority. One survey I conducted of scholars regarding their attitudes toward video games found that only about 30 percent agreed that video game addiction is a serious problem. That the WHO appear to have made little effort to understand the concerns of more skeptical scholars is worrisome."

Out of the Blue

Considering re-watching Bad Santa is one of our favorite holiday traditions here in the BlueTower, it's a bit of a surprise it took us over a year to see the sequel. We remedied this last night by catching up with Bad Santa 2. I knew in advance that this got mixed reviews, but so did the original, so we were open-minded. So yeah, about that... let's just say we were not impressed. This managed to capture some of the outrageousness of the original, but missed out on most of what made the first Bad Santa so good. Oh well, lesson learned. There's still the Director's Cut to fall back on. Many DCs just add in some deleted scenes, but the Bad Santa Director's Cut seems like a different movie. And apparently there's an unrated cut out there too, so one of these days I'll have to figure out if we've actually seen that or not. Either way, we won't be watching Bad Santa 2 again.
