Volition Layoffs Reported

Over 30 employees were laid off this week from Volition, reports Kotaku, where they say the casualties include general manager Dan Cermak. They have not heard back from Volition owner Deep Silver about this, so it is unconfirmed, but they say their information comes from three sources. According to these informants, this move was prompted by the disappointing performance of the recently released Agents of Mayhem, an action game intended to expand the Saints Row series. According to the story, the developer had around 200 staff prior to this.

Elite Dangerous: The Return

A Steam Community Announcement have details on a new version 2.4 patch for Elite Dangerous that Frontier Developments dubs "The Return." The patch notes are quite lengthy, but are vague about what's returning (spoiler alert, it's the Thargoid race). Here's a cinematic trailer showing this returnination, and here's the news:

Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV) today launched Elite Dangerous: Horizons 2.4 – The Return, thrusting players into combat against one of gaming’s most fearsome foes. The Elite Dangerous galaxy will never be the same again.

Since 2014 Elite Dangerous players have scoured the vast simulated Milky Way galaxy as tensions between the Empire, Federation and Alliance have risen. With each new discovery of unknown artefacts, probes and relics, players drew another step closer to the return of the Thargoids.

Today humanity’s dreaded enemy will return in an ongoing Elite Dangerous story arc enabled by Elite Dangerous: Horizons 2.4 – The Return, continuing the Horizons season with ongoing story events that will see commanders thrust into battle against the Thargoids for the first time in gaming’s modern age, bringing a new and deadly dynamic to the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

In coming months the Thargoids’ influence will be felt throughout Elite Dangerous, and players will be forced to develop new tactics and technologies of their own to counter the Thargoid menace, or see humanity’s grip on our sectors of the galaxy recede.

Assassin's Creed Origins – Discovery Tour Plans

UbiBlog announces details about an educational Discovery Tour mode coming to Assassin's Creed Origins in a free update early next year. This will enhance the ability to experience history through the game in a combat free environment. Here's word:

With Discovery Tour, Assassin’s Creed Origins is using the concept of the Animus Database – long one of the most fascinating parts of the series – as a springboard for an entirely new kind of experience. Where the Database was a collection of educational (and frequently snarky) notes on the important people, places, and events that you encounter in each game, Discovery Tour adds an entirely new game mode that turns the massive re-creation of Egypt into a combat-free living museum, with guided tours that let players delve into its history firsthand.

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, that we’ve been asked to do by teachers, by institutions,” says Jean Guesdon, creative director for Assassin’s Creed Origins. “Discovery Tour is another way to enjoy the beauty of the world we’ve recreated. It’s a more educative mode, so it’s clearly focused on education and on bringing to people actual facts, more academic knowledge.”

Separate from the main game, Discovery Tour annotates the game world with dozens of interactive tours curated by historians and Egyptologists. Each focuses on a different subject, including the Great Pyramids, the life of Cleopatra, mummification, and more. Additionally, Discovery Tour lets players roam the entire game world without constraints or threats, exploring a sprawling landscape that includes Memphis, Alexandria, the Sand Sea, and the Giza Plateau at their own pace.

Overwatch Ban Bug Squashed

A post from Jeff Kaplan on explains that Blizzard has identified and fixed a bug that was banning innocent players from competitive Overwatch. Here's word on what happened in the multiplayer shooter:

We recently identified a bug that, in extremely rare cases, can cause players to lose their skill rating progress and receive a seasonal ban from Competitive Play without any prior penalties for leaving early or being kicked for inactivity. This bug is a high priority for our team, and we’re working on a fix to prevent further instances of it occurring as we speak.

In the meantime, we’ll be removing the seasonal ban for all players affected by this bug as well as restoring their skill rating. To date, this bug has impacted fewer than 200 accounts, but we’ll continue to monitor for additional occurrences and provide assistance until we can implement a permanent fix. We don’t have an ETA to share right now for when the fix will go live, but we’ll update this thread as soon more information becomes available.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this bug has caused and are grateful for your patience and ongoing reports.

Sylvio 2 Next Month

Independent developer Stroboskop announces Sylvio 2 will be released on October 11th, offering a sequel to their acclaimed 2015 horror game. The launch trailer introduces the game, and a separate trailer shows off gameplay. Here are the details:

Sylvio 2 is a sequel to critically acclaimed Sylvio, nominated for Best Original Game on the 2015 TIGA Awards and listed as one of the best horror games ever by PC Gamer. It is created and developed by Niklas Swanberg, owner of horror game studio Stroboskop. Juliette Waters is once again portrayed by Swedish actress Maia Hansson Bergqvist.

She learns that her boyfriend Jonathan is looking for her, and she decides to look for him too. She borrows Walter’s boat to travel the flooded landscapes of Saginaw Park, and heads for the coordinates written down on a post-it note stuck to the ship’s computer.

The game consists of nine levels and a flooded main area with twenty islands, free to explore. Estimated gameplay time is 6 hours.

PlanetSide 2 Patch Includes Major Changes

The PlanetSide 2 Forums have details on a new "Critical Mass" update for PlanetSide 2, the multiplayer shooter sequel (thanks Dave). This adds a new weapon and implements a bunch of major changes to various systems, including a complete reworking of the vehicle/infantry relationship. Here's word on a continent locking revamp that's part of this:

Continent Locking Revamp
With the Critical Mass update comes a major revision of the way continents are fought over and conquered. When one faction has refined enough cortium and controlled enough territory, that faction triggers an alert which signifies the impending domination of a continent. If the triggering faction wins the alert, they will conquer the continent and call in an armada of Bastion Fleet Carriers to rain destruction upon their enemies.

The Goal
One of the driving motivators of revitalizing the continent locking system is to encourage more strategy and competitive spirit in PlanetSide 2. Prior to this update, locking a continent was not only confusing for many players, but also happened abruptly, and often times without direct influence from the players fighting on the front lines. The new system intends to create a climactic end-of-continent encounter that challenges players not only as individuals, but as squads, platoons, and outfits. We want players to feel the rush of a hard fought victory, and reward them for partaking in it.

Awakening the Nightmare is a brand-new full expansion for Halo Wars 2, featuring new campaign missions played from a Banished perspective, two new multiplayer leaders, two new multiplayer maps, and Terminus Firefight – a unique new cooperative mode where players build both bases and armies to defend and survive against an onslaught of enemy forces.

Out of the Blue

Our endless moving project has been repeatedly set back by additional projects, but we are inevitably going to run out of them. We have a little demo work in the basement that needs to be done. I am a mixed bag when it comes to handiness, but this actually seems pretty minor, and I'm imagining I can do most or all of it myself. We do have a handyman coming to give his thoughts on the topic today, though, so I'll see if what he says changes my thoughts on that. Either way, it feels like we're nearing the home stretch.
