Star Citizen Refund Story Disputed

Ars Technica has a statement from Cloud Imperium Games refuting the claim that a consortium had secured a $45,000 refund for Star Citizen. Their side of the story contradicts most of the details from the original report, and the account that posted the refund story has since been deleted. Here's word:

[Update: Cloud Imperium spokesperson Dave Swofford tells Ars that "a lot of the information was fabricated" in the Reddit post discussed the below. Swofford says the account in question was issued an individual refund of $330, not the $45,000 claimed in posted screenshots and videos which Swofford says do not reflect actual complaints requests logged by the company. What's more, Swofford says the refund was handled "in a timely fashion" with "no extended debate over whether we should."

Our unending thanks to each of the 42,713 Kickstarter backers who put their faith in us two years ago, and to every player that explored Fort Joy during last year's Early Access. Without your trust and without your feedback none of this would be possible.

But of course, the journey's not over. Indeed, for you it's just beginning...

Bethesda Game Studios is celebrating this incredible milestone with a special 5-day giveaway that begins tomorrow, September 15. Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation Free DLC

Stardock continues to add new content to Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, announcing the release of new free Juggernaut DLC. This comes along with a new patch to update the real-time strategy game to version 2.5. This forum post covers both releases, offering patch notes and a release trailer for the DLC. Here's word:

Today, Stardock released the v2.5 update and free Juggernaut DLC for its massive-scale RTS game, Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation. The update includes improvements to modding, sight range reworks, unit speed increases, and more, while the DLC debuts a new Juggernaut for both the PHC and the Substrate factions.

"The PHC Agamemnon and the Substrate Eye of Darkness were both uniquely designed in order to complement our existing Juggernauts," said Escalation designer Callum McCole. "Juggernauts are definitely late-game killing machines, but they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Players will have to consider how they put their armies together around these warships in order to win."

To learn more about how the new juggernauts will interface with existing units, visit this unit profiles post on the forums. The two new warships in the Juggernaut DLC are:

  • PHC Agamemnon: Designed to annihilate swarms of enemy units and overrun defensive positions, the Agamemnon has the potential to hold territory against waves of enemies for long periods of time. It's powerful, but take care when you deploy this ship - it lacks the armor piercing capabilities to be effective against other juggernauts or dreadnought destroyers.
  • Substrate Eye of Darkness: The ultimate manifestation of the Substrate's technological superiority, the Eye of Darkness is capable of rupturing the fabric of space and time to destabilize targets at the molecular level. It is devastating against ground units, however, be alert: it is the only Juggernaut that lacks any anti-air weaponry.

The v2.5 update accompanies the new DLC and focuses on gameplay improvements and modding optimization. "Modders are going to really love this update," said McCole. "We adjusted outdated and obsolete reference names to reflect the unit names known to players. Because of this, it'll be easier for modders to find what they're looking for. We want to make modding as easy and intuitive as possible for first-timers and this step is absolutely vital to that."

Op Ed

Why I deleted my Steam account -
"This same approach of course applies to the Steam community, which technically has guidelines, but little interest in enforcing them. Hey, there's a guideline forbidding racism and discrimination, weird. I guess "Nazi Recruitment Group Order#1" (NSFW) with the swastika logo and 76 members has just fallen through the cracks for the last two years. And that user, "F*** Blacks," with a graphic avatar of a man fellating himself? I'm sure he just changed it and I just happened to visit the site in the split-second that was online before he was banned.

Nope, still there.

Oh, and this one, "Whites Only," (NSFW) a group "for any fellow White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and anyone who just hates colored people!" (If you must click through, be warned it only gets more racist from there.) Maybe nobody's noticed them. Oh wait, no, here's a post in the Steam help forums asking people to help ban the group for being racist. Well maybe Valve hasn't seen it. Oh, wait. There's a post from a Valve community mod locking the thread and linking to the support page on how to report abusive behavior."

$45K Star Citizen Refund?

A post to reddit in a sub-reddit called Star Citizen Refunds claims what seems like it must be the largest game refund in history (thanks Rollory). This says a corporate entity secured a refund for three Star Citizen "Completionist" packages originally purchased for $15,000 each, making the grand total for their refund $45,000. Here's the story:

There was lots of arguing within our guild, but in the end the whales who had contributed the most had the final say, and we refunded our three completionist packages, originally purchased at $15k each, so $45k total refund. We sidelined many other great games and commercial opportunities waiting for Star Citizen, but in the end we can't wait any longer, and a new generation is joining also who have absolutely no interest. The final straw was evidence presented the committee of Chris Roberts blatantly lying, we don't mind the delays but couldn't handle the lies anymore, and it left us wondering what else he is knowingly lying about.

It was a nightmare getting the refund, we are a commercial org and pooled the money to buy the completionist packages, and used a corporate card to buy them, so we had major issues with getting refunded to the same card, paypal and then providing ID. Total it took about 5 weeks to get sorted. A lot of time was spent trying to explain the situation to some woman called "Schala" and just getting the same answers copied and pasted backwards and forwards, they definitely try to delay you as much as possible in the hope you'll forget or give up.

I prefer to remain anonymous as the guild can easily be linked back to my personal identity, and we all know how insane and potentially dangerous the few remaining Star Citizen believers can be. I'll put some juicy screenshots below however.

Thanks for all your help here guys, we couldn't have done it without the support and guidance of this subreddit.

Overwatch Toxicity Slowing Game Development

A recent forum post from Jeff Kaplan touches on player behavior in Overwatch, saying he had already recorded a developer update on the topic. Now that video is live, offering Jeff's take on toxicity and what can be done to address it. He explains that this has become so problematic that it's actually delaying other updates to the game, ruing the efforts at implementing and improving player reporting, saying he'd rather be improving the game itself. "The bad behavior is not just ruining the experience for one and other," he explains. "But the bad behavior is actually making the game progress, in terms of development, at a much slower rate." On their end, he talks about giving players feedback when they report bad behavior, saying there is a pilot program in place to send users an explanation of actions based on their complaints. Refuting the idea that the reporting system is pointless, he says to date they have disciplined over 480,000 players, and over 340,000 of these actions were directly based on player reports. One of his suggestions is that the community also look inward to try and reduce toxic behavior through introspection, so we can all wait to see if that will happen.
