New AMD ReLive Drivers

AMD now offers new version 17.7.2 Crimson ReLive drivers for AMD graphics cards. From the sound of it this is a big update, promising performance improvements, reduced latency, smaller framerate variances, power savings, faster load times, and a new Enhanced Sync feature, which they outline in more detail in a separate article. There's a lot to digest in that article and the patch notes. Here's the intro to the enhanced sync dealie, which is separate from, and in addition to their FreeSync tech:
Since the beginning of PC graphics, one of the biggest problems on this front has been synchronization between the game’s animation and the display’s update rate. Most displays update themselves at a fixed rate, typically at 60Hz or 60 times per second, in fixed steps. Meanwhile, games and other 3D graphics applications can produce new frames of animation at different rates, and those frame rates tend to vary over time. Often, much of what we perceive as slowdowns or sluggishness when gaming involves poor interactions between these two timing loops.

In fact, on a 60Hz display, animation can look more uneven when a game is running at 40 FPS than at 30 FPS, because at 40 FPS, the display is updated in an elliptical pattern:

You’re seeing a less pleasing pattern of animation, even though the GPU is cranking out frames at a higher rate, thanks to a timing sync issue between the game and the display.

We’ve come up with some outstanding technology to address this problem, most notably Radeon™ FreeSync technology for compatible monitors with variable refresh rates. I could talk about the theory all day, but you have to see FreeSync in action in order to appreciate it properly. Once you’ve experienced it, you won’t ever want to go back to gaming on a fixed-refresh display.

MS on PC Gaming

There's an interview on PCGamesN where Microsoft once again expresses their alleged love for PC gamers, talking about Windows 10, remasters of older MS PC games, and their Play Anywhere program. Mike Ybarra, president for Windows and Xbox gaming, tells them they want to make Windows 10 "the best operating system for gamers," talking about non-Win10 specific features like support for 21:9 resolution, SLI, and AMD Crossfire. Adam Isgreen is the creative director at Microsoft Studios Publishing where they are working on an Age of Empires remaster, and he tells them: "We want to treat PC like a first-class citizen." It's hard not to be cynical about this, as they've hyped PC gamers with similar raps in the past, but have never shown a lot of substantial results. And frankly, saying you want to make Windows 10 the best gaming OS seems an admission that it isn't already, and wanting to treat PC like a first-class citizen suggests that it has gotten second-class treatment in the past.

Final Lawbreakers Open Beta Friday

Boss Key Productions announces one more open beta session for Lawbreakers will begin on Friday, before the first-person shooter launches on August 8th. This will include PlayStation 4 this time around, and both and gamers can get a headstart on testing by downloading the beta now for Steam or PS4. Here's the plan:
Days before LawBreakers launches on Aug. 8, Boss Key Productions is challenging gamers to bring their skills and join the final open beta on PlayStation®4 for the first time, or one last time on PC. Starting on July 28 at 7 a.m. PT, players will have the opportunity to play all of the content from each previous beta to date, including eight roles, six maps, and four modes. Visit Steam or PlayStation® to start pre-downloading the build now. The open beta event ends July 31 at 7 a.m. PT.

This is a last call for those players who haven’t experienced the groundbreaking, gravity-defying combat of LawBreakers to test their skills and allows those returning players eager for an edge on day one to come back and prove their dominance. LawBreakers’ thrilling omni-directional gunplay is guaranteed to challenge even the best players to bring their skills, get off the ground and deliver death from every angle with innovative movement systems and combat abilities.

The final open beta delivers on Boss Key Productions’ tradition of iterating on the game’s balance and design based off community feedback along with giving players an opportunity to check out the near final game. Following is a rundown of what players can expect, and more reasons to jump into the beta this Friday:

  • The ability to unlock and equip any of the launch Stash Drop contents during the beta, including all skins, stickers, and profile pics
  • A first-look at the Wraith and Assassin’s Kinetic Blades, a special one-week exclusive item that all players can get when logging into the full game during Aug. 8-15
  • Check out all the balance changes and fixes made based on community feedback from previous beta periods
  • Experience the improvements made to matchmaking
  • On PC, test out the game’s Twitch features including account-link, Broadcasting LIVE icon and more

LawBreakers is a multiplayer FPS in which the laws of physics are shattered, creating intense gravity-based combat across the ground and air of futuristic landscapes. Players either fight to uphold the “Law” or go out for blood as a “Breaker,” as they jump into competitive team-based matches that take place across iconic locations including the boiling oceans off the Santa Monica coastline to a gravity-ravaged Grand Canyon.

Overwatch Penalties Expand

A post to the Overwatch Forums from community manager Lylirra on changes coming to the Reporting & Penalty System for Overwatch, Blizzard's multiplayer shooter. They say they "believe that our in-game reporting and player penalty system is one of our most important features," and now they are giving some added teeth so hopefully players will someday begin to share that opinion. Here's word:
“Play nice; play fair” is one of Blizzard's core values. It’s something we took to heart in creating Overwatch and remains a priority as we continue to support the game and our players. This not only applies to the new content we develop and the balance changes we make, but also to the features we add or improve upon over time.

We believe that our in-game reporting and player penalty system is one of our most important features, and it’s something we want to invest in significantly over the next year. To this end, effective immediately, we will be issuing increased penalties to players in response to verified reports of bad behavior. In Overwatch, that means anything from abusive chat, harassment, in-game spam, match inactivity (being intentionally AFK), and griefing. If you see someone engaging in any of these types of behaviors, report them. Players in violation will be silenced, suspended, or even banned from the game as a result.

We know that making Overwatch a truly welcoming environment is an ongoing process, and this is only the first step. Over the next several months, we have plans to make additional improvements based on your feedback, including scaling competitive season bans, a notification system that will alert you when a player you’ve reported is actioned, and functionality that will allow us to more aggressively penalize players who attempt to abuse the in-game reporting tool.

We also remain committed to bringing a reporting system to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. As console players ourselves, we know it’s been frustrating to not have this functionality on your platform. We are actively working on the feature and have many elements of undergoing internal testing right now. Our goal is to implement similar reporting options as are currently available on PC, and any improvements made to PC between now and when it’s available.

Thank you for your vigilance, passion, and commitment to building a welcoming and enjoyable community and helping us make Overwatch the best game it can be.

Mafia III Sign of the Times Released

This post announces the Sign of the Times DLC for Mafia III is now available on Steam. Included is this launch trailer setting up the story for the DLC. Here's word on what they say is the final piece of DLC for the Windows and macOS crime game:
A new enemy: The Ensanglante is a drug-fueled, blood-worshipping cult operating in and around the city. They’re set on an inevitable collision course with Lincoln after he disrupts one of their macabre ceremonies taking place inside the walls of Sammy’s bar.

A mystery to solve: It’s a game of cat-and-mouse as you work to uncover the Ensanglante’s end-game. Along the way, you’ll investigate ritual sites for clues and signs of their whereabouts. Check bodies, take pictures of evidence and follow clues with your black light as you edge closer to the horrifying truth. You can read more about the cult and the Investigation experience here on the Mafia blog.

A new way to play: If you have deadly accuracy, you’ll get extra time to take down targets. “Sign of the Times” introduces a new slow-motion gunplay mechanic, similar to the slow-motion driving skill introduced in “Faster, Baby!”. Once activated, the world slows as you take aim. While the timer ticks down, snap off successful headshots and you can keep the meter going.

New weapons in your arsenal: Once you beat back the Ensanglante, you can order the Black Sacrament automatic rifle from the weapons van. And throughout the game, you’ll discover throwing knives that’ll let you silently slay your way through the city.

New threads: Ready to rip the roads up as if you were in a gang? Slap on the Motorcycle Club outfit. Playing “Sign of the Times” also unlocks The Wanderer and Tee Time outfits in Lincoln’s wardrobe.

New wheels for your fleet: Win the Samson Harrier hotrod in a race and you’ll fly off the line. Meanwhile, the Bulworth Harrow is a seriously grim set of wheels perfect for ushering your enemies to their very own funeral.

A “new” place to call home – Sammy’s: All the hard-earned cash earned from your side businesses and whatever you *ahem* get while on the streets can be put into refurbishing Sammy’s to its former glory. Rebuild the bar, get a new jukebox – put Sammy’s back together just like you remember it from the very beginning of the game. But you can also start adding more to it. This was a big request from the fans – and it’s something we really wanted to deliver in “Sign of the Times”.
