Rainbow Six Siege Operation Health

UbiBlog announces Ubisoft's plans to change how Rainbow Six Siege is updated across all platforms. This is planned as a three-month, three-stage process with a "hard push toward tech improvements and bug fixes." Here's a bit on the plan and how this changes their schedule:
Rainbow Six Siege boasts a thriving community of online players, and the game’s overall health is always chief among the development team’s priorities. As such, the team has made the decision to focus on improving the overall Rainbow Six Siege experience over the next three months with a series of improvements and changes called Operation Health.

Operation Health is a hard push toward tech improvements and bug fixes, and it introduces a new three-stage deployment process for updates, with new features first rolling out on a Technical Test Server, then on PC, then on consoles. (There’s also a new on/off feature in case a rollback is needed). Because of this new focus, the planned Hong Kong season will be pushed back to Season Three in August, while November’s Season Four will feature South Korea. Poland will no longer have its own season in Year Two, but its GROM Operators will be available at the start of seasons three and four. The number of new maps has also been reduced to three, and includes the most recent map set in Spain.

Block'hood Released

Block'hood is now out of early access on Steam and is also now available on GOG.com, offering the full release of this Windows, Linux, and OS X neighborhood builder. This trailer offers a look at the game, which seems a little like the offspring of Sim City and Populous. Here's the announcement:
Announced for the Early Access program in 2015, Block'hood has achieved several accolades and recognition for its approach to conscious building and city planning. Budding city planners now have access to more than 200 building blocks from the original 90 to arrange and combine, creating unique neighborhoods and the sometimes surprising consequences of their designs.

Additional resources are always needed to unlock new blocks, configurations, and combinations to create more prosperous neighborhoods. Throughout the design process, players will need to avoid the decay of their city blocks by making sure each unit doesn’t run out of resources and become a strain on the complementary units around them.

With a five episode story mode now complete, players are able to experience a heartwarming tale about a boy, his pet and his neighborhood as well as explore other modes like Challenge mode, Sandbox mode and Education mode. Additionally, the title has undergone a complete aesthetic update that iterates on the already unique and eye-pleasing design of the original.

Square Enix Selling IO Interactive

Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. Announces Financial Results For The Fiscal Year Ended March 31, 2017. These seem positive, as they say: "For this fiscal year, the Company reported record-high net sales, operating income, ordinary income and profit attributable to owners of parent, respectively." It's not good news for everyone, however, as they also announce they are parting ways with HITMAN developer IO Interactive. This relationship stretches back to when Square Enix acquired the assets of EIDOS Interactive, but it is now coming to an end. There are further details in a Notice of Booking of Extraordinary Loss, which explains they are putting the company up for sale:
To maximize player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios. As a result, the Company has regrettably decided to withdraw from the business of IO Interactive A/S, a wholly-owned subsidiary and a Danish corporation, as of March 31, 2017. This decision has resulted in booking of the extraordinary loss amounting to 4,898 million yen, including disposition of the content production account related to the business and impairment loss of intangible assets, in the financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017.

As a result of this the Company started discussions with potential new investors and is currently in negotiations to secure this investment. Whilst there can be no guarantees that the negotiations will be concluded successfully, they are being explored since this is in the best interests of our shareholders, the studio and the industry as a whole.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew Gets Watson AI

UbiBlog announces that interactive speech features coming to Star Trek: Bridge Crew thanks to Watson, the supercomputer named for a really smart dude's roommate. This game will put players into a virtual reality simulation of running a starship, but this relates to the game's AI, rather than its VR magic. They say Watson can fill out the crew for groups of fewer than four players, and will understand natural language commands. Here's word:
Part of what makes Watson an effective question-answering machine is its ability to work with natural language – and it’s those interactive speech and cognitive abilities that are set to boldly make their way into Bridge Crew. When playing as Captain on either ship, the U.S.S. Aegis or U.S.S. Enterprise, you’ll be able to speak direct, interactive commands to your virtual Starfleet shipmates. Captains can use Watson for any crew of less than four players. And where in the past voice commands in games have often been a source of frustration and controller-hurling, this new technology – built using IBM’s VR Speech Sandbox system – promises a far smoother and more responsive experience.

“We have been eager to find the right way to use interactive speech to tap into the more immersive and interactive experiences that virtual reality offers,” says David Votypka, senior creative director on Star Trek: Bridge Crew. “Watson gives captains the ability to issue commands to non-player crew members in the same way they do with a human crew: by using their voice.”

Watson’s speech features will be available to Star Trek: Bridge Crew players this summer in beta for cross-platform play, enabling combinations of AI and human players and ensuring a seamless experience if a player drops out mid-session (or if two or three friends want to play privately).

Star Trek: Bridge Crew will arrive on May 30 for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR

The Elf servants have blasphemed not just by leaving Ulthuan, but by daring to interfere with the Cosmic Gates – an ancient device that can open a portal into the Realm of Chaos. For such a heinous transgressions, the Elves must be punished as decreed by Mazdamundi, the Lord of the Solar City." Continue here to read the full story.

Out of the Blue

I had an encounter the other day that completely delighted the dog lover in me. I got to meet someone's pair of rescue greyhounds. Saving a retired racing dog is something that appeals to us, but MrsBlue's allergies would prevent us from following through on that. These dogs were so sweet, and it was a lot of fun getting to know them. The other thing was that this was in a very small apartment, which did not seem to bother these large dogs a bit. That is how the breed is described, apparently in spite of their speed and athleticism, greyhounds are quite content to be couch potatoes given the opportunity, much like most of us.
