Windows 10 Update Breaks Multi-Monitor Support

ExtremeTech warns Windows 10 users that the January 10, 2017—KB3213986 (OS Build 14393.693) build of the OS breaks multi-monitor support in some games (thanks Evil Timmy). Here's word:

The KB article includes a number of new features and improvements (better Groove Music streaming and improved Remote Desktop reliability), better handling of multiple input devices, and a host of other low-level issues. Unfortunately, it also added a few new problems to the mix. Specifically: “Users may experience delayed or clipped screens while running 3D rendering apps (such as games) on systems with more than one monitor.” Microsoft’s suggested workarounds are to run your games in windowed mode or to start a game with just one monitor connected — which is just what everyone who games on multiple monitors is going to want to do.

In the past, we’d simply recommend not installing this update. Now, Microsoft makes you take the update whether you want it or not. Sure, you can uninstall some updates and flag them as incompatible with your system, but this assumes that the end user is aware that an update has been installed and knows how to uninstall it and flag it as problematic in the future. What’s more likely is that at least some people wind up with nonfunctional multi-monitor gaming setups, at least until they stumble on this issue.

Outbreak Next Week

Drop Dead Studios announces Outbreak will break out on January 17th, offering a top-down survival shooter inspired by games such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The game will feature multiplayer on dedicated servers as well as offline single-player. A new launch trailer offers a look, and here are more details:

Outbreak’s unforgiving difficulty will test your nerves and force you to think on your feet. You’re thrown into an intense and difficult survival situation with limited inventory space for equipment, no pausing, challenging puzzles, and ONE LIFE.

Be ready to face flaming monstrosities, poisonous undead canines, and more! Fortunately, a wide array of weaponry and additional equipment is scattered throughout the hospital facility: pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, axes, knives, climbing picks, and even grenade launchers. Don’t forget to look for opportunities to combine items in your inventory to get the most out of them -- such as mixing healing salves for stronger effects. You can even trade with your teammates to make sure everyone has the most suitable gear.

MULTIPLAYER TIDBITS
Multiplayer runs on cloud servers. According to developer Dead Drop Studios, there should be virtually no connection issues. (There’s no P2P, so players don't directly connect.) Furthermore, Outbreak has a *region selector* to ensure a low ping worldwide.

KEY FEATURES

  • Friendly play: 4-player online co-op multiplayer featuring voice chat.
  • Dark atmosphere: Explore a deserted hospital infested by the undead.
  • Brutal difficulty: Your character only has a single life; includes 3 difficulty settings.
  • Limited inventory: Decide which items are worthy, and which should be left behind.
  • Expansive arsenal: Defend yourself with a multitude of firearms and melee weapons.
  • Challenging puzzles: Scour each room to solve puzzles and learn about the outbreak.
  • High replay value: Semi-random enemy and item layouts make every playthrough unique.
  • Distinct characters: Four playable characters with individual attributes and starting gear.
  • Essential equipment: Earn during play or trade (Steam only) with other users.

Outbreak will launch with full controller support, and it works perfectly with Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers.

Verdun Adds Scottish Troops

Steam Community Announcement details a new free update that's now available for Verdun on Steam. This updates the World War I shooter with some new troops, and if they're not Scottish, they're crap! Here's a trailer and here's word:

The Scottish were no stranger to war, and when the call to arms came in 1914, a relatively large number of Scottish young men eagerly joined the ranks of the British in Belgium. Wearing their traditional kilts, they performed many aggressive scouting maneuvers, often finding themselves in the thick of savage battles such as Loos and Arras. They suffered a staggering number of casualties as a result, but were nevertheless undeterred and soon earned the nicknamed the “ladies from hell”.

The Scottish squad will perform the role of aggressive scouting in Verdun. They are armed with the distinctive Pattern 1914 Enfield, a five-round “dog-leg” bolt handle rifle ideal for marksmen. This rifle was used in the later years of the war as a designated sniper rifle. The rifle combines the elements of the famous German Mauser, the five-round internal box magazine, with some Lee-Enfield features. Compared to the standard Lee-Enfield, the Pattern 1914 was more accurate and durable, though heavier as well.

More Overwatch Roadhog Changes

Overwatch designer Geoff Goodman made this post to explain changes in a new build of the multiplayer shooter that's going into testing on the PTR. This includes re-balancing some changes, primarily adding some effectiveness back to Roadhog's hook after recent nerfs. Here's word:

We're about to push a new build to the PTR with some new changes:

Roadhog Hook

  • Added some more line of sight checks towards the left/right of a potential hook target. This means it should be easier to hook someone who is sticking halfway out of a doorway, or behind a thin pole, etc. These checks are also used for the persistent line of sight check, so if a hook target moves behind a slim object like a stump or a lightpole, they won't be released anymore.
  • Hooked targets are now slowed heavily while they are stunned, even if they are in the air. This means if someone is strafe jumping away from you and you land a hook, they are a lot less likely to slide out of line on sight, breaking the hook.
  • Fixed a bug that could allow you to hook someone and pull them behind you if you spun around before the hook landed.

Ana

  • Biotic Grenade duration reduced from 5s to 4s

Sombra

  • Hack cooldown reduced from 12s to 8s

Thanks for the feedback so far! Hopefully we'll have this new patch up very soon so you guys can check it out and let us know what you think.

Troll and I Trailer

Maximum Games offers a new story trailer for Troll and I, their mythical adventure game that's due on March 21st. Word is: "Today’s trailer highlights the game’s heroes, Otto and Troll, and the challenges they will face together as their relationship grows and evolves over the course of their journey." Here's more on what to expect from the game:

Taking place in the majestic mountains and lush forests of post-World War II, 1950’s-era Scandinavia, Troll and I follows the adventure of a teenage boy and the unlikely friendship he develops with a massive, mythical Troll. Though Otto moved to the backwoods with his family to live in harmony with nature, he now finds himself at the mercy of the unforgiving wilderness, ripped from his village when ruthless hunters looking for Troll destroy his home. Now with a bounty on his head, and forced into hiding to survive, Otto encounters and befriends Troll, an elusive creature of folklore and legend who has managed to stay hidden from the world…until now. Thrown together by circumstances out of their control, two stories of desperate survival become one.

Humans aren’t the only adversaries this duo will face off against during their journey. The hunters, in pursuit of their prize, have unwittingly awakened ancient evils from the depths of the earth, vicious kobolds and worse. Otto and Troll must work together, using their respective strengths and inherent skills to complement each other’s weaknesses if they are to survive the dire circumstances they find themselves in. No matter the unpredictable challenges they may face, be it supernatural or of this world, Otto and Troll have each other’s backs and will face them, together.

Troll and I features a combat system that allows contrasting abilities for each character: Troll and his highly damaging attacks can crush enemies in one blow while Otto incorporates more quick and nimble moves. Troll and Otto can also cohesively act as one to fight off rivals, solve puzzles and complete missions. Each employs their own distinct presence and gameplay functionality.

Utilizing cooperative split-screen multiplayer, play locally with a friend, as teamwork is absolutely pivotal to staying alive. With a dynamic duo like Otto and Troll, the local co-op feature allows for shared collaboration between two gamers, creating an experience equally captivating for both players.
