Eagle Flight Takes Off on Rift

Ubisoft announces that Eagle Flight is now available for Oculus Rift, offering their first virtual reality game. This will also come to the PlayStation VR on November 8th and to the HTC Vive on December 20th. This trailer offers a look at the game and how dorky one looks in a headset, and here's word on the VR flying game:

Developed by FunHouse, a division of Ubisoft Montreal, Eagle Flight is set 50 years after humans have disappeared from Earth, where wildlife and nature have taken over Paris. The game lets players explore one of the most visited cities from a new point of view, as a bird of prey. As an eagle, players glide past historic landmarks and weave through narrow streets and secret passages. In single-player mode, players refine their flying skills, learning new tricks by competing in challenges and in multiplayer face-off in a heart-pounding capture-the-prey dogfights for up to three vs three players.

Eagle Flight, developed specifically for VR, strongly focuses on accessibility and comfort. The game features a VR control technology breakthrough that provides players with natural and precise movement controls. With this breakthrough players can comfortably hone their flying skills in order to achieve remarkable aerial maneuvers, and experience the true sensation of flight.

New Starpoint Gemini Warlords Content

This announcement has all the details on a content patch now available in Starpoint Gemini Warlords, the early access action/RPG from Little Green Men Games. Here's part of the overview:

It's time for the next Warlords update (what a surprise!) bringing it up to v0.620. This time we focused on adding new content, but also on some major changes which I'm sure you'll notice when you start playing the updated version. Let's go over the big things:

Core gameplay changes
We have felt that players, including a lot uf us in the team, weren't using skills nearly as much as they should've been used. Our legacy skill system promoted building up only 1 individual skill to make the most use from it as all skills drained power from the same power core and shared its cooldown, along with the cloaking system. Cloaking is now more of a passive action and doesn't drain power anymore, we are planning to improve upon this design, but for now it has unlimited duration.

Paradox Interactive now offers a European Club Pack for Cities: Skylines, adding new sporting stadiums to the urban planning game. Here's word on what comes with this premium DLC:

Get your citizens cheering for their favorite football clubs -- and yours! The European Club Pack brings real-world clubs into your in-game cities, adding the iconic teams and their stadiums to the game. Let your town root for with FC Barcelona, Chelsea Football Club, Juventus Football Club, and Paris Saint-Germain, and celebrate Match Day like never before!

Feature list:

  • Four new stadiums modeled after real-world arenas
  • Officially licensed logos and team colors
  • Handle the increased traffic to your stadium on match day -- and reap the revenue from tickets

Star Control: Origins Announced

Star Control Forums have the announcement of Star Control: Origins, a new installment in the space action series in the works at Stardock. They say this represents a new start for the franchise, saying it will come to PCs and consoles, with the PC version expected next year. They also plan a founder's program to provide beta access before the full release. The post includes a first few screenshots, and the following details:

Stardock announced Star Control: Origins today. Star Control: Origins is a sci-fi action/adventure game with many RPG elements set in the future where the player is the captain of Earth’s first interstellar starship that explores a procedurally created galaxy, makes contact with various alien races, explores unique worlds, and engages in action packed battles, all while trying to unravel the complex intrigue that has the galaxy on the brink of chaos.

"We Earthlings are the newcomers to the galactic scene," said Brad Wardell, Executive Producer. "The dozen plus space-faring species have been hatching their schemes since before we got out of trees. Now, suddenly, they have to deal with those meddling apes from Sol 3 who threaten to upset the plot."

The game starts in the year 2086 with the unaware humans receiving a distress call from an alien ship that has crashed on the moon of Triton, leading to the formation of Star Control, an international space agency dedicated to protecting the Earth. The player takes on the role of The Captain of Earth’s first interstellar ship whose first mission is to investigate the the distress signal.

Star Control: Origins represents a new start for the beloved franchise. Stardock acquired the rights to Star Control 1/2/3 from Atari and since then has launched a new game studio in Towson Maryland specifically to create the new Star Control title. The classic series is available for sale on Stardock's newly launched website with players also able to pre-order Star Control: Origins and join the Founder’s Program.

"Star Control is ultimately about us Earthlings exploring the galaxy, finding and talking to strange alien civilizations, and hopefully living to tell the tale," said Wardell. "We are hopeful those who remember the original trilogy will like the direction we’re taking here while at the same time introducing a whole new generation to the awesomeness of a game that combined action, adventure, and roleplaying in a sci-fi game simultaneously."

Star Control: Origins is scheduled for release on PC and consoles with the PC release scheduled for 2017.

Players interested in joining the Founder's program for $35 will gain access to the upcoming beta program as well as access to the Founder’s Vault, mod tools, private journals and more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Announced for Consoles

A couple of days of teasing now culminate in an official announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2, saying the wild west shooter sequel is coming next fall. This is bad news for those hoping this announcement would somehow involve the PC platform, as they only say this is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. They say: "An epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland, the game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience." This multiplayer news corresponds to word that Rockstar registered a domain for Red Dead Online. They promise a reveal trailer on Thursday, so keep an eye on the Red Dead Redemption 2 website.

United Front Games Closed?

United Front Games has closed down, according to an unconfirmed report on Kotaku Australia saying the closure of the Sleeping Dogs developer came as a surprise. Following-up on reports that early access title SMASH+GRAB is no longer available on Steam, they learned of the shutdown from "a source within the studio," though there hasn't yet been an official statement. Late last year the studio closed down Triad Wars, a multiplayer variant on Sleeping Dogs. The SMASH+GRAB Steam page is still online, but the game is no longer available. Thanks Kotaku.

Valve on Illegal Skin Gambling

TechRaptor has a copy of Valve's letter to the Washington Gambling Commission after the commission recently ordered them to end gambling on Counter-Strike skins. This put them in the position of someone explaining technology to your grandparents, as they outline the processes by which third-party sites use to facilitate skin gambling without Valve's participation. They conclude outlining where they think this situation stands:

Valve can enforce its user agreements against the Steam accounts of skins gambling sites, where we can identify the site and identify the corresponding account. In fact, we would be happy to cooperate with the commission, if it is able to identify more skins gambling sites that are illegal in Washington and the Steam accounts through which they operate. We welcome the chance for further communication with the Commission, if it would like to clarify the legal allegations against Valve, or alternatively to work with Valve to identify the offending Steam accounts of gambling sites.
