Paradox Interactive announces today marks the launch of Stellaris for
Windows, OS X, and Linux, offering their new grand strategy game set in the
depths of outer space, where no one can hear, well anything.
The launch trailer
introduces the game and shows it off, and the announcement offers some details:
Paradox Interactive, a publisher and developer of truly grand strategy games,
today released Stellaris for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs. Stellaris is the
latest game from Paradox Development Studio, the creators of such deep strategy
series as Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, and more. In the
studio’s first-ever sci-fi grand strategy game, players can begin a journey into
a randomly generated universe as the species of their choice – exploring new
worlds, encountering new beings, and facing the challenges of intergalactic
colonization, diplomacy, warfare, perils, and crises.
In Stellaris, players must guide a species of their own design to power and
glory in the depths of space. From humble beginnings as players leave their home
planet and explore the unknown, to tense “first contact” moments with alien
species, to the difficult choices and responsibilities of managing diplomatic
relationships with other star-faring races, Stellaris presents the iconic
gameplay of a Paradox grand strategy title on a galactic scale. With randomly
created opponents and procedurally generated star systems, no two games can ever
play out the same way.

The
GeForce website has word on a press demonstration of the new DOOM game that
showed off a couple of possible points of interest. The clip shows the game with
all the visual settings maxed out running at 60 fps on a GTX 1080, their
just-announced upcoming flagship accelerator. They also say that this was
running under Vulkan, saying DOOM will be the first AAA game to make use of this
new low-level API. The kicker comes at the end when they turn off the artificial
framerate cap to show the unthrottled game can actually run at 200 frames per
second with everything set to "Ultra." Here's
a video showing the
demonstration, and here's word: At a post-announcement event for
technology journalists, id Software made a surprise appearance to demo the new
Doom. Running on a GeForce GTX 1080, the framerate was a solid 60 with every
setting turned to Ultra. It was then revealed that the demo was in fact running
on Vulkan, a cross-platform low-level graphics API, making Doom the first AAA
game to use the exciting new technology. But that wasn't all: for their big
finale, id Software announced that the framerate was being artificially capped
to 60 -- switching the cap off, Doom ran at up to 200 FPS during the
multi-minute live demo!
By eliminating most of the overheads present on DirectX 11, and by utilizing new
technologies and techniques, Vulkan can greatly accelerate framerates in games.
And with the GeForce GTX 1080 you can push those framerates higher and higher. Continue here to read the full story.
A post on NeoGAF
has a screenshot of a listing that allegedly appeared on Steam revealing a May
30th release date for the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3:
Wild Hunt. The listing is no longer available, so this may not be accurate,
but can provide a glimmer of hope for those hoping for more content for the
action/RPG sequel. Thanks

Battleborn ends its first week at number three on the
GFK Chart-Track top 30 chart for PC sales in the U.K. the week ending May
7th. At the top of that chart, Football Manager 2016 maintains a toehold
on the top spot, and The Sims 4 is still number two. Gearbox's new
shooter lands on top of the
all platforms chart, pushing Ratchet & Clank to number three. Here's
the summary: New IP from ‘Borderlands’ indie developer Gearbox Software
debuts at No1.
The 2K and Take 2 published ‘Battleborn’ takes the top spot and is a first No1
for the Take 2 family for over a year (last was GTA V in week 11, 2015). There’s
not a lot else happening this week as the UK receives some summer sunshine and
overall sales slump by 11% over last week. Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops
III’ continues at No2 (-3%) and Sony’s ‘Ratchet & Clank’ (-51%) drops from a two
week stint at No1 to No3. Rockstar and Take 2’s ‘GTA V’ continues to climb
another 4 places to No4 this week (+20%) and Ubisoft drop one place to No5 with
‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’ (-28%), making it 9 weeks within the Top 5. It’s a
few days before the release of ‘Uncharted 4’ and Sony’s ‘Uncharted: The Nathan
Drake Collection’ re-enters the chart at No22 (+125%) thanks to some retail
promotion.

I'm on the mend today, as I suffered a little back strain over the weekend.
These used to be pretty frequent, but at some point in the late 90s I invested
in an Aeron chair, and haven't really had any problems since. This backache is
much milder than the ones I used to suffer, and it's been so long since I've had
one that I'm hoping this as an isolated incident, rather than a warning that my
problem is returning, but I will be try to pay a little better attention to my
posture in case I've been slipping, as I have a tendency to slouch.
