Ubisoft vs The Division Cheaters

Ubisoft announces plans to deal with the scurrilous sort who have been cheating in Tom Clancy's The Division. They make a distinction between those actively running cheat engines versus those exploiting bugs, and say that going forward they are going to be more proactive in earmarking unpatched bugs they consider exploits and will then be taking stronger actions against those who exploit them after that. Here's word on dealing with those who run cheat engines:

From the very beginning of development, our emphasis has always been on the player experience and how good we want it to be. We have great plans for the future of The Division, and for these to succeed we must make sure to provide a smooth high-quality experience. Unfortunately, the gameplay experience was recently impaired by in-game bugs and players violating the rules of the game. In order to bring back a better and healthier environment, we have taken new steps to address the situation.

CHEAT ENGINES

Cheating players have been an issue for a number of you in the Dark Zone, and we’ve heard this feedback loud and clear. We are strengthening our efforts to address this problem, as described below.

First, we have implemented new cheat detection methods that have allowed us to identify many more players currently using cheat engines in the game. We have already caught more cheaters in the last few days than we had in total during the previous weeks. As a result, we will be handing out the biggest wave of suspensions and bans to date over the course of the next few days.

Second, when cheaters are caught, we will now apply a suspension of 14 days on first offense (instead of the previous 3 day initial suspension). Second offense will always be a permanent ban.

We anticipate these two changes will noticeably improve your experience. New upgrades on cheat detection are underway.

Starship Corporation Early Access

Early access to Starship Corporation is now available on Steam, offering first crack at this sci-fi RTS game. "We are excited to reveal our unique game to players all over the world and we are very curious to see what kind of imaginative ship designs and gameplay strategies will unfold from the gaming community," says David Murent, lead developer at Coronado Games. "We are eagerly looking forward to player feedback to further enhance the development process." Here's an infomercial trailer celebrating the news, and here's more on the game:

Starship Corporation is a real-time strategy game that contains 4 elements: Ship Design - Crew and AI Tactics - Ship Building - and Trade. The player is able to create the layout for Spaceships and Planetary Installations with multiple decks within the boundaries of existing fuselages. The player can choose between (currently) 50 Room types in 6 categories. A completed design can then be challenged by playing a series of missions to test the crew´s reaction to emergencies and the ships combat capabilities. The success of these missions determines the ship’s rating, important for a good price on the market or the ship’s performance in your own fleet.

Tenebrae Combat Trailer

A new gameplay trailer from Tenebrae - Twilight of the Gods showing off combat in Troglobytes Games' upcoming action/adventure game. "The team has been hard at work to implement the combat system and some basic AI for the enemies, which will be further developed in the next few months," explains programmer and tech artist Luciano Iurino. "We also implemented a brand new random dungeon generator which will allow for more interesting Metroidvania-like maps to explore." Here's a refresher on the game:

Tenebrae - Twilight of the Gods is a story-driven, fast-paced 3D Action/Adventure game with just the right dose of RPG elements to further spice up the gameplay. Into the Black

Romero's BLACKROOM Kickstarter Paused

The BLACKROOM Kickstarter page announces the cancellation, for the moment, of the crowdsourced fundraising for BLACKROOM, a first-person shooter proposed by id Software expatriates John Romero and Adrian Carmack. The accompanying update explains that they have are "pressing 'PAUSE'" on the campaign to produce a playable demo based on the feedback to their original pitch. Here's word:

You asked for it, and you’re getting it: a gameplay demo of BLACKROOM.

The team is at work on a demo which demonstrates the kind of gameplay, look and innovative, cool features that make BLACKROOM truly unique — the things we’ve waited years to put into an FPS and which make us incredibly excited about this game.

There’s a hitch here, a hitch that’s making us do something that’s right for the game, the team, and the community: we’re pressing “PAUSE” on the fundraising campaign for BLACKROOM to complete this gameplay demo. Simply put, this will take more time than the Kickstarter has left, so we’ve decided to suspend the campaign and launch a new one when the gameplay demo is ready. We believe, however, it is the right choice. We know you do, too. Thanks to your feedback, we know we should have included it at launch.

To all of our backers: your support has been incredible and valuable. We will, of course, honor backer achievements in the next campaign (and an extra something for those of you who continue to support us in the next campaign).

While we're working on the first gameplay demo, we welcome you to stay in touch with us at nightworkgames.com and @nightworkgames. Sign up for our newsletter for regular updates. You’re also welcome to email us at info@nightworkgames.com.

Battlefield Reveal Next Week?

German site PC Games Hardware shows an invitation from DICE EA to a "Battlefield World Premiere" dated May 6th (thanks DSOGaming). This is unconfirmed for now, but it's plausible that we're due for a new installment in the series, as Battlefield Hardline is over a year old now.

Lionhead Closed

Lionhead Studios is officially closed, a development that was expected after the recent news that Fable Legends was closing down. As noted on Eurogamer, there are a number of tweets on the topic from now-former employees of this studio founded in 1996 by Peter Molyneux, and they also have a confirmation of the news in a statement from Microsoft:

"We can confirm that after much consideration over the six week consultation period with Lionhead employees, we have reached the decision to close Lionhead Studios. We have nothing but heart-felt thanks for the team at Lionhead for their significant contributions to Xbox and the games industry."

Possible Introversion Game Plans

A new video from Introversion included with a post about a new Prison Architect patch. Though the video concentrates on the patch, it also includes a look at prototypes for two games they may explore further. The audience apparently has a say in this, as they are soliciting feedback. Here's word:

TWO BRAND NEW GAME PROTOTYPES
Introducing 'Scanner Sombre' and 'Wrong Wire'

Skip forward to 22 minutes into the video, to see us demonstrate two of our (potentially) upcoming games. These are prototypes we have been developing in secret until now, and will form the basis of whatever comes next after Prison Architect. Please keep in mind that whilst we intend to continue supporting Prison Architect with updates for a very long time, we also intend to make new games, just as we have always done.

We are interested in your thoughts on the new games. Please go here to vote on your favourite:

The Climb Ascends

Crytek announces The Climb is now available for Oculus Rift, offering the chance to defy vertigo and gravity in a virtual rock-climbing experience. The game's launch trailer offers a look at gameplay, and more media along with all the details on the game can be found on its official website. Here's a rundown on the game:

Launching on Oculus Rift, The Climb invites players into breathtaking virtual worlds to scale sheer cliff faces and explore rock-climbing playgrounds inspired by real-life locations. The newly revealed environment takes inspiration from the landscapes of the Grand Canyon and draws upon wider natural and cultural cues from across the USA, combining iconic elements to create an immersive blend of sights, sounds and adrenaline-pumping challenges. By night, fireworks from a music festival and howling coyotes accompany breathtaking ascents, while daylight reveals endless vistas marked by winding rivers, mysterious mine shafts and jets performing dramatic formation flyovers. The heat will be on as players feel the scale of the environment, the vertigo of the height and the challenge of the competition to achieve the best times on leaderboards.

Complementing the main free solo rock climbing experience, The Climb features tutorials and a procedurally generated endless climbing wall to practice on, plus six intense bouldering routes to beat. Players can also use Tourist mode to explore each expansive environment with simplified game mechanics, perfect for discovering new routes, enjoying the scenery, and demonstrating VR to friends and family for the first time. Finally, the game’s asynchronous multiplayer mode allows gamers to compete against other players' ascents and send challenges to their friends.

Out of the Blue

I somehow managed to make my appointment for a FiOS installation without realizing Verizon was on strike. If I was smart I would have postponed this until everything was settled there, but I am dumb, and I allowed my eagerness to stop suffering internet disconnections to convince me this would work out. The guy who came to do my install was nice enough, but he was an app programmer, and any efficiency he brought to the software side of this was more than negated by his inexperience with the hardware (anyone who has every marveled at a cable technician putting a plug on a co-ax cable in 10 seconds would have cringed at how he made this a 10 minute process). Anyway, the internet side of this is all working fine, but I have no telephone, and my attempts to address this has lead to a string of conversations with people who have zero idea what they are doing. I'm hopeful this will all get worked out this morning, but I am starting to grow fearful that we may end up losing our phone numbers along the way.
