Archived News:
Gearbox has confirmed at PAX East that a new Borderlands game will be
their next project after Battleborn, reports
Eurogamer, though the quote they provide from Gearbox's Randy Pitchford
doesn't say that exactly, only that "It's no secret, obviously there's going to
be another Borderlands." He also says they aren't sure if the next installment
in the shooter series will be called Borderlands 3 or Borderlands 4 (they've
apparently ruled out Post-Pre-Sequel), and with Battleborn still in the works,
there's no time frame yet for when to expect this. Word is writing chores will
be handled by Mikey Neumann who wrote the first Borderlands game.
GSC Game World is getting set to start beta testing of Cossacks 3, saying
they plan on conducting several waves of testing before the release of the
real-time strategy sequel. Those interested should fill out the
Cossacks 3 beta tester's application. Here's
word:
We are happy to announce that we are now ready to begin accepting
applications for beta testers. Everyone, who has ever dreamed of being a part of
the GSC team and put their own efforts into Cossacks 3 development can fill in
the form and try their luck.
From the bulk of the applications we will choose the first wave of beta testers
according to your gaming experience, PC specifications, age etc. We are planning
to have several waves of testers in order to be sure of the quality of the
product we will release.
Robert Duffy has a
post on
Bethesda.net discussing the Windows edition of DOOM, reassuring PC
gamers that some of the features missing from the beta will be present in the
final version of their shooter sequel, including an uncapped framerate,
multimonitor support, ultrawidescreen support, and more. Here's word: The
DOOM Open Beta finished earlier this week and thanks to your participation over
the course of the weekend, we got a lot of great information. The server backend
infrastructure held up really well to the load, and we got all of the data we
need in preparation for the worldwide launch on May 13. Based on your feedback
we had already made a considerable number of updates and improvements between
the Closed Betas and Open Beta, and we appreciate all the additional feedback
you shared with us during the Open Beta.
In particular we got a lot of feedback from the PC community with regards to
capped framerates, monitor support, multi-monitor support and other PC features
that weren’t emphasized in the Beta for various development reasons. So to
clarify: At launch the PC framerate will not be capped. Further, the PC version
of DOOM will expose a comprehensive set of advanced game and rendering options
that will allow players to dial the experience up or down based on their
individual desires or hardware capabilities.
PC gaming is in our DNA here at id. Just like so many of you, we also love to
tinker with settings to get the exact experience we want – and every ounce of
performance our systems can handle. We will be running an uncapped framerate on
PC at launch, supporting ultra-wide 21:9 monitors, allowing wider FOV, and
providing a wide variety of advanced settings that allows any PC connoisseur the
opportunity to make intelligent tradeoffs between visual fidelity and
performance.
We also know many of you are interested in some deeper insight into the types of
fundamental changes we’ve made to our engine technology over the last few years.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be giving you an inside look at idTech 6 engine
architecture, our rendering pipeline, our customization tech and other
initiatives we have underway to broaden our minimum PC spec even further than
our current expectations.
Our current expected PC advanced settings include: Continue here to read the full story.
Crown and Council is now available for Windows
on Steam, offering a
free game from Mojang that started as a game jam jammie. Word is: "Originally a
jam game, Crown and Council is a casual strategy game of geopolitical drama.
Conquer, expand, build and develop your kingdom, until all your foes are
crushed! Crown and Council relied on procedural generation for the 75 included
maps. The generator is built into the game, and you can generate new maps on the
fly." The
Mojang website has more: It’s
Crown and Council, a
fast-paced strategy game about conquering land and obliterating rival monarchs.
Click adjacent land tiles to subdue them with your army, earning gold to fund
further expeditions, defensive forts, naval attacks, universities and more.
Muscle your opposition off the map! There can be only one ruler in these lands!
It’s simple to play, but not quite so easy to win: do you spend all your cash on
universities, hoping to survive long enough that your book-learnin’ makes you
unstoppable in the late game? Or do yo go for a quick land-grab, hoping to put
enough boots on the ground to give you an irreversible early advantage?
Other features include fabulously mustachioed pixel-art tyrants, procedural land
generation and procedural insults from your regal rivals. Have that, No Man’s
Sky.
The
Battleborn website now offers an infographic for the Battleborn open
beta, quantifying the badassery demonstrated during open beta testing of Gearbox
Software's multiplayer shooter, going the picture of numbers one better by also
offering a video of tweets
(we truly live in an era of cross-technology miracles). The success of the beta
also triggered a community unlock of three golden skins. Here's word on that:
In addition, we challenged to collectively meet three lofty goals which
you badasses blew out of the water! In only five days, the Battleborn
community completed:
- 1.1 Million Competitive Multiplayer matches
- 1.4 Million Story Mode episodes
- 27 Billion Shards collected
This means we will be sharing a SHiFT code on May 3 for three golden skins,
one for ISIC, Benedict, and Shayne & Aurox! Stay tuned to find out how everyone
who purchases Battleborn will be able to redeem the code.

Daedalic Entertainment Studio West is at PAX East this weekend, showing off
The Long Journey Home, their space exploration game
coming later this year to Windows, OS X, and Linux. They are
introducing four characters, who are also briefly on display in
this recent teaser trailer
from the project that also shows off some gameplay. Here's word on the game and
its influences: The Long Journey Home is a Space Exploration RPG that
combines the best of classic space adventures like Starflight and Star Control
II with the replayability of modern roguelikes, in a procedurally generated,
endlessly surprising living universe inspired by beloved modern Science Fiction
shows like Farscape and Firefly.
Your goal: to find the way back to Earth. An accident during humanity’s first
jump drive test has catapulted you and your crew to the other side of the
galaxy, and the only way home is through. Lead your crew as you explore new
worlds in search of allies and support. Face searing storms and deadly gravity
as you plunder alien worlds for their secrets and technology. Befriend alien
races and earn their trust. Keep your people alive. Continue here to read the full story.
Happy Earth Day! As my elementary school principle one lamented, "every day
should be Earth Day." He and I didn't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but I'm
with him on that one. Here's to the Earth, as it's one of my favorite places,
and hats off to those swimming against the tide to try and keep the place tidy.
