Lawmakers Dropping F2P; Launching on Steam

Today at the GDC Boss Key boss Cliff Bleszinski revealed some new details about Lawbreakers, the upcoming first-person shooter that will be the debut release from the studio the designer formed after leaving Epic Games. At the show he revealed a new art direction said to be more aligned with his original vision, and you can see more on that and the game's "R-rated experience" in this article on their website. He also announced Lawbreakers will launch exclusively on Steam and that it will not be a free-to-play game, noting that this would negatively impact game balance. They call it a "digital premium title," though they say it will not be $60.00 (we presume that means it will be less). Here's the announcement, including a FAQ on their Steam plans:

In a panel presented at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) today, industry veteran Cliff Bleszinski and the team at Boss Key Productions announced that their upcoming multiplayer FPS LawBreakers, will be available exclusively on the Steam platform at launch. Fans are able to add the game to their Steam Wishlist starting today, by visiting http://store.steampowered.com/app/350280.

LawBreakers is an upcoming new first-person shooter in which even the laws of physics can be shattered, creating intense gravity-based combat and resulting in an ever-evolving and bloody arena. Set in a futuristic rebuilt America, players will choose whether to kill for the nobility of the “Law,” or go out for blood as a “Breaker,” as they take part in the conflict raging across iconic locations including the boiling oceans off the Santa Monica coastline, to a gravity ravaged Grand Canyon and nearly unrecognizable Mount Rushmore.

Boss Key also announced LawBreakers will be a digital premium title when released. While the price has not yet been announced, they assured the audience it will not have the $60 price point of a traditional box product.

“As the game continued to take shape, we realized free-to-play wasn’t the right fit for what we’re building,” said Cliff Bleszinski. “LawBreakers is a competitive game at heart and that means balance is a big priority to me, my team, and our community. Using a digital premium model helps ensure an even playing field by giving fans access to every available role without any barriers.”

Addressing how to make a new FPS stand out among heavyweights in the industry, the panel – titled “Surrounded by 800 lb Gorillas! Standing Up to the Competition” – also revealed LawBreakers’ shift in design to embrace a more mature look and feel, and gave attendees a first look at a revamped logo, game models and screenshots illustrating the new tone and attitude, which will feature variable gravity effects, unique roll-based movement systems and truly three-dimensional combat realized through grappling blades, reverse blind-firing, time dilation, jetpacks and more.

XCOM 2 - Anarchy's Children Released

XCOM 2 - Anarchy's Children is now available on Steam, offering a rebellion-themed cosmetic content pack with more than 100 new customizations for your XCOM 2 soldiers. This update has all the information, including details on a new patch for the strategy sequel that accompanies the DLC. Here's word:

Anarchy’s Children features over 100 new exotic customization options for your soldiers, including new hair styles, face paints, armor, lower face props, decals, helmets, masks and more. Your soldiers will strike fear into ADVENT and its alien overlords with menacing tactical styles that run the gamut from post-apocalyptic to the downright deranged.

If you don’t already own the Reinforcement Pack, which includes Anarchy’s Children and two future pieces of DLC, you can purchase Anarchy’s Children individually for $4.99. If you have already purchased the Reinforcement Pack, do not also purchase Anarchy’s Children on its own, as you will be charged for it.

The team has put out a patch to prepare the game for the enhanced customization in Anarchy’s Children. This patch also provides a few minor changes that will affect the base game including soldiers now having four new slots to attach additional pieces of armor: left/right arm and left/right shoulder. While Anarchy’s Children gives players new armor pieces to be used in these slots, anyone with the base game can also take advantage of this update. And DLC is not required for modders, who can already begin creating new customizations for these slots.

Changes included in this patch:

  • Anarchy’s Children compatibility changes
  • Players will now be able to press “Load Anyways” when loading a save when the mods used are not present
  • Fixed the sort order of available targets in shot HUD
  • Corrected an issue causing Grenadier’s demolition to fail to update the target’s cover status
  • Adds “Zip Mode” description text

It’s a game that will test the player’s skill through six campaigns with different starting conditions where the opponent is guided by a deep and challenging AI.

An integral part of the design is the cards system. This element adds a touch of unpredictability to each new game. There are almost 100 different “Event Cards” with art designed by Keith Rocco, that will give players and opponents, advantages on the battlefield. Each card gives special unit upgrades, new recruits or political actions that can change the delicate balance between the factions.

Out of the Blue

Beware two days after the Ides of March, as this is St. Patrick's Day, the annual celebration of the patron saint of Ireland and snake expeller extraordinaire. This often involves getting blind drunk, so please be safe if you are out there celebrating (or just if you are out there). I don't think we have anything going on in the BlueTower to commemorate the occasion, and I'm sort of regretting that, since I do love me some corned beef. I think I need to start taking advantage of this holiday to indulge that affection.
