A new Tyranny website is online,
revealing Tyranny, a new RPG in development at Obsidian
Entertainment for release this year. This is set in a world where evil has
defeated good, and it's time to get good at being bad.
This trailer
introduces the game, and here's the announcement: Obsidian Entertainment
and Paradox Interactive today announced Tyranny, a brand-new role-playing game
(RPG) coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs. Tyranny, designed and developed by
the studio behind award-winning titles such as Pillars of Eternity, Fallout: New
Vegas, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, introduces players to an
original fantasy world where a brutal clash between good and evil has taken
place – and evil emerged triumphant. A nonlinear story challenges players to
find their role within the dominant empire and live with the outcomes of
difficult, morally unclear decisions.

Tyranny
“Four years ago, we hoped the world wanted to be reacquainted with classic,
story-rich RPGs. As it turned out, the answer to that was an emphatic ‘yes,’”
said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment. “Since then, there’s been
a renaissance in RPGs thanks to games like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2,
Divinity: Original Sin and others. What’s incredible is that we’ve been able to
continue evolving the types of RPGs we make since Obsidian was founded in 2003.
With Tyranny, we love the twist we’ve put on the world which started with the
premise ‘What if evil already won?’ Coupled with that is our ongoing dedication
to giving our players games full of choice and consequence. Games they can play
not just once, but many times.”
In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of
evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies
dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles
within the war-torn realm. Players interact with the populace to inspire
loyalty, disgust, or fear as they roam the world as an officer in Kyros’ forces,
empowered to act as both judge and executioner.
“In Obsidian, we’ve identified a partner whose development and design ideals are
a perfect match for our own,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive.
“We’ve been involved with Tyranny from the ground up, and are proud to be
working with the Obsidian team on the creation of this unique world. This will
mark a bold step for Paradox into the RPG genre, and we can’t think of a better
partner to have for the journey.”
Tyranny is scheduled to release in 2016. For more information about Tyranny,

The CRYENGINE website announces a new
"no royalties" and "no obligations" business model for the CryENGINE.
This will allow developers to pick their own price in the manner of some indie
game promotions. Here's an overview from
their announcement: CRYENGINE V launches today with a “Pay What You
Want” business model, offering developers everywhere total access to the
engine’s feature-set and full engine source code for a fee of their choosing,
and with no obligation to pay royalties or additional service charges. Users who
decide to make a contribution for utilizing CRYENGINE V can allocate up to 70%
of the sum to Crytek’s new Indie Development Fund – a grant program that will
see Crytek directly supporting promising indie projects around the world.
The latest evolution of CRYENGINE also introduces CRYENGINE Marketplace. The
Marketplace will enable developers to access individual assets from Crytek’s own
library, as well as thousands of materials, sounds, and 3D objects created by
the CRYENGINE community and other trusted vendors.
Crytek’s Founder, CEO & President, Cevat Yerli, said: “CRYENGINE V represents
our commitment to not only offering developers today’s most advanced engine
technology, but also to making it as accessible as possible. The arrival of
CRYENGINE Marketplace, the revamped engine UI, and new support channels will
make it easier than ever to tap into the power of CRYENGINE – at a price that
feels comfortable for each and every individual. Community is at the heart of
our Pay What You Want Model, which we hope will foster closer collaboration
between us and developers as well as developers amongst themselves.”
Studio Wildcard announces ARK: Survival of the Fittest, a free multiplayer
spinoff of ARK: Survival
Evolved, the dinosaur-infested survival game. They call this a MOSA
(multiplayer online survival arena) "that pits as many as 72 combatants against
one another in spontaneous Hunger Games-style competitions within a closed
battlefield." They also say it's now available on Steam early
access, though it doesn't seem to have actually appeared just yet (it looks like
they expect it to show up
here). The
launch video offers a
look, and here's word: Built for the burgeoning wild west of eSports
competition, ARK: SotF challenges gamers to fight each other and the Jurassic
environment that players loved in ARK: Survival Evolved. However, rather than a
huge open world to survive in, this newly refactored game is an epic dinosaur
survival arena with a continually shrinking “ring of death.” In the end,
survivors are eventually pushed into an epic final showdown where only one
“Tribe” will make it out alive.
Survivors can form one- to six-person Tribes with the options to choose
Unofficial and Official (Ranked) servers, and a variety of game-lengths and
sizes in which to play. Players will start in the base forest environment
introduced in the original ARK: Survival Evolved, with new environments and
creatures introduced regularly as the game evolves. Dedicated eSport ranking,
matchmaking, reward, and tournament features make ARK: SotF readily accessible
to all players.
As part of the ongoing Survival of the Fittest eSport competitive initiative,
each month the Top-10 Ranked players in each game mode’s "Survivor League" will
be awarded cash prize winnings corresponding to their Ranked placement. The
ongoing Rankings for these elite titles will be visible in real-time on
SurviveTheArk.com at launch. Continue here to read the full story.

for launch. Word is: "Exciting news: Battleborn retail is ready! Back in the day
we would say "Gone Gold!" Team is stoked and hard at work on support, beta,

A post titled
Supporting Custom Game Developers on the Dota 2 blog has word that
Valve is taking a new approach to allow mod developers to monetize their work
with a subscription system called the Custom Game Pass. This sort of thing has
met with resistance in the
past, and this time they are looking to avoid this by offering the mods for
free, and using the subscription to enhance the experience. There's
an interview
with Gabe Newell on the subject on PC Gamer, and a
FAQ with more. Here's word:
Introducing the Custom Game Pass, a new system for supporting and
rewarding custom game developers who are committed to building vibrant and
lasting communities around their games.
Custom Games Passes will be limited to a small number of high-quality games that
have established themselves in the community. Purchasing a pass directly
supports the creators of the custom game as well as granting you extra features
for that game. All custom games will remain free to download and play.
The first Custom Game Pass will be available for Roshpit Champions at a price of
$1 for a 30-day duration. While everyone can play Roshpit Champions for free,
the Custom Game Pass will enable additional stash and character slots, and offer
multiple perks for the duration of the pass.
Ubisoft follows their

by
claiming the game has also set company and industry records for first week sales
by a new franchise. Here's word: Today, Ubisoft announced ongoing record
sell-through sales for Tom Clancy’s The Division, which has grossed more than
$330 million worldwide in its first five days*. Having already broken Ubisoft
sales records in the first 24 hours following its release, The Division is now
the company’s best-selling game and the industry’s best-selling new game
franchise in an opening week.
“The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first week sales of a new
franchise is a tremendous achievement. We are very proud of our teams, and
humbled by and thankful for the millions of players who are giving us their
feedback and support,” said Yves Guillemot, CEO and Co-Founder, Ubisoft. “The
Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive
gaming playgrounds that keeps players engaged and that they eagerly share with
their friends and community.”
The Division is also breaking player engagement records for Ubisoft. The game
surpassed 1.2 million peak concurrent users over the weekend. Players spent more
than 100 million hours playing online on Ubisoft’s servers in the first week.
“On top of record breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any
Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our
online infrastructure and services are paying off,” said Stephanie Perotti, Vice
President of Online Services, Ubisoft. “We are delivering an online experience
that’s on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and
connectivity demanded by The Division and its players.”

P.A.M.E.L.A. showing off alpha gameplay
footage from this upcoming open-world survival game. Word on the game is: "In P.A.M.E.L.A. players survive against all odds by wielding unconventional

advancement." Here's more on this video: The P.A.M.E.L.A. Alpha Gameplay
Trailer gives the first reveal of raw gameplay showing off a longer, unfiltered
taste of what it means to survive in Eden, including exploration of all-new
environments, combat mechanics, weapons and base building features.
“The alpha gameplay video provides players with a deeper insight into the world
of P.A.M.E.L.A. Beginning as the player awakens from cryosleep, it showcases the
first few moments of the player's experience as they scavenge for supplies,
weapons, and defend themselves against the afflicted citizens of Eden,” said
Adam Simonar, Studio Director of NVYVE® Studios. “In a completely open and
non-linear world, no two players' experiences will be the same as they struggle
against randomly generated dangers and items. Even sanctuary behind the walls of
their fortifications can only last so long, as power is finite and constantly
depleting.” Continue here to read the full story.

ExtremeTech has details on the Radeon Pro Duo, a dual-GPU graphics card
coming soon for those willing to foot its $1,499.00 price tag. They say this is
targeted more towards developers than users, and that one of the applications
of a monster like this is virtual reality development. VR is something AMD also
addresses with the announcement of
Sulon Q headsets, which include a PC integrated into the unit, which may end
up being more ergonomic than competitors by being wireless, or less, by being
clunkier. Here are more details on the new dual-GPU card: As the name
“Radeon Pro” implies, this really isn’t a GPU marketed to enthusiasts. While it
should offer the highest-end dual graphics solution currently available, $1,499
is a high price, even for the enthusiast market. The one argument to make in
favor of the Radeon Pro as opposed to a pair of Fury X’s is that most cases
aren’t designed to mount two GPU radiator blocks.
AMD may still release a dual GPU card that’s explicitly aimed at the enthusiast
market, but this GPU is targeting VR developers. Dual-GPU support for VR is
something AMD has been keen to push with its LiquidVR technology, and it’s
hoping that more developers agree to support the software.
Posts on the
GeForce Forums and the
NVIDIA subreddit report problems with NVIDIA's new version 364.51 Windows
drivers, a beta driver that was rushed out to
address problems reported with their
prior driver release. There are reports of
framerate drops, games not starting, freezes, and more, in some cases reporting
more problems with the new drivers than with the drivers they replaced.
According to
GameSpot, the
version
362.00 GeForce Game Ready Driver WHQL released earlier this month is the
last version of the driver that can be generally trusted.
Beware the Ides of March! Apparently in my case this involves being aware of an
alarm that would not go off this morning, but that beats the heck out of the
Julius Caesar treatment, don't you think? But seriously, et too, Timex?
