Stardock now offers beta 2 of
Ashes of the Singularity,
which is now available in early access on
GOG.com and
Steam. This includes an
updated version of the game's integrated DirectX 12 benchmark, which you may
have seen has spawned a number of recent preview articles. Here's word on the
new beta and benchmark: Stardock released Beta 2 of its upcoming
massive-scale real-time strategy game, Ashes of the Singularity today.
Ashes of the Singularity takes place in a post-technological singularity
universe in which humans have begun to colonize the stars. Now, they face a foe
that threatens to annihilate them, the Substrate, a race of machines that seeks
to control the same worlds that humanity is claiming.
Beta 2 includes a new DirectX 12 benchmark developed by Oxide Games as well as
explicit support for new DirectX 12 features such as multiple GPUs and
Asynchronous compute.
“With this update, players can improve game performance by adding another video
card,” said Dan Baker, Chief Scientist at Oxide Games. “As long as the two cards
are reasonably similar in performance, they can be of any model or brand
including mixing AMD and NVidia cards together. Players just insert the
additional video card and enable it via the game’s video options panel.”
The new benchmark is accessible by users from the main menu with different
display preferences available from the options menu.
“Stardock and Oxide are doing great work taking advantage of Windows 10 with
DirectX 12 features such as asynchronous compute and multiple GPUs,” said Kevin
Unangst, Senior Global Director, PC Gaming at Microsoft. “Their new DirectX 12
benchmark lets gamers see how their systems perform with actual gameplay.”
In addition, Beta 2 also greatly improves on the already well received
artificial intelligence (AI) first scene in Beta 1.
“Ashes of the Singularity isn’t just a battle, it’s a war across an entire
world,” said Brad Wardell, Executive Producer of Ashes of the Singularity. “As
visually stunning as the game can be, the success of the game is dependent on
the gameplay. That’s why we’re investing so much into making sure the computer
opponents are such worthy adversaries.”
Beta 2 is now available in Early Access on both Steam and GOG. It includes
single player skirmish, co-op multiplayer, and ranked multiplayer.
Early access to Acaratus is now available
on Steam, offering the
first chance to play this award-winning turn-based RPG for Windows that features
"randomized maps, highly customizable battle suits, and collectible cards." A
recent trailer offers
a look at gameplay, and here's word: Swedish indie developer Nodbrim
Interactive today announced that Acaratus, its medieval steampunk tactical
turn-based RPG, has launched on the Early Access stage and is now available
through Steam for Windows PC. In Acaratus players build mechanized battle suits
and fight to free an enslaved population. After winning
Sweden’s Game Concept Challenge for independent developers, Nodbrim
Interactive have secured funding to kick-start the development of Acaratus,
where players’ strategic skills are put to the test in a beautiful, alternative
Steampunk universe.
“Winning the Game Concept Challenge to make Acaratus a reality means so much to
us as a team”, said Martin Kupski, Creative Director at Nodbrim Interactive.
“We’ll continue to listen to what our steadily growing community wants in order
to give them the truly unique strategy experience they deserve”.
Acaratus challenges players with multiple layers of strategy, urging them to
plan a few steps ahead. Players have to construct their own mecha units from
highly customizable modular attachments and decide between ranged, melee,
boosters and defensive parts. Weapons range from war hammers to longer ranged
projectile-based weapons, such as cannons. Ability card decks are also used by
players as attack, defence or skill boosts to support their unique play styles
and help them succeed in deep tactical turn-based gameplay. Combat takes place
in a beautiful medieval steampunk setting with randomised maps, and players can
also fight each other in the battle arenas.

Daedalic announces plans for Deponia Doomsday, saying those interested in
a fourth installment in "the most successful German adventure series of all
time" don't have long to wait, as it will be released on March 1st for Windows,
OS X, and Linux (with console editions to follow). The
game's Steam page is
online, and here's an
announcement teaser
with a look at what to expect, and here's the news: The flying city of
Elysium has fallen, hideous Fewlocks inhabit the junk planet Deponia and Rufus
is apparently the sole (human) survivor. He sees only one way out: Deponia must
be blown up.
Terrified, Rufus awakes in his bed. Was that a dream or a vision? Fortunately,
Rufus can check this right away as the oddball Professor McChronicle has
detected several time anomalies. It's rather handy that Rufus finds a time
machine and immediately sets out to duly muddle up the past, present and future.
Features:
- Dystopia vs. Utopia mixed with Neill Blomkamp's
Elysium and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar – Welcome to Deponia Doomsday!
- Following Goodbye Deponia, the first game
developed 100% by Jan Müller-Michaelis (alias Poki)
- Fan service: Some players called for an alternate
ending and another part to the Deponia saga
- Rufus travels through time – with dramatic
consequences
- Goal, Lonzo, Lotti and even Wenzel – Reunions with
familiar and over 70 new oddball characters
- The player discovers the floating city of Elysium
for the first time
- With around 20 hours of gameplay and over 100 game
backgrounds, Deponia Doomsday is the largest and most elaborate Deponia game
so far
- Deponia Doomsday serves a timeless (!) genre and
once again resurrects classic adventures

NeoGAF shows
that Remedy has registered a trademark for Alan Wake Returns, a strong
suggestion of a new installment in the psychological survival/horror series.
They also note that related domains were registered last year, but that this
trademark filing from a couple of days ago used Fast Track, so there's some
sense of urgency there. Thanks

A new trailer from
Dark Souls III shows off the "true colors of darkness" (which sounds
a little like an ad for OLED televisions) of FromSoftware's action/RPG sequel. Word is: "Titled 'True Colors of Darkness,' the
trailer drops viewers into the twisted world of DARK SOULS III, filled to the
brim with grotesque enemies, lethal weapons and the classic sword and sorcery
combat and rewarding action-RPG gameplay the DARK SOULS franchise is known for." Continue here to read the full story.
Goodgame Studios announces they've opened a new studio called The Fourth Floor
to work on client-based games from this German developer that claims regional
leadership in the realm of mobile and browser-based games. Next month they plan
on fully announcing their first project, an Unreal Engine 4 online action/RPG,
though for now they are holding back on revealing the title, much less further
details. "The 4th Floor has a unique environment with widespread creative
freedom. I empower my team to take calculated risks and push the boundaries of
the action-RPG genre to create a unique gameplay experience for our community of
players,"explains studio head William Corey Barnard. "Our first PC client game
combines unique asymmetric, competitive, and cooperative gameplay in a way never
seen before. We have made amazing progress due to the team’s incredible
dedication and passion."
Battle.net
announces the recently
revealed matchmaking changes are now live, in Heroes of the Storm, so QuickMatch players will be less
likely to end up on teams with oddball compositions in the MOBA. Here's the list of heroes
that shouldn't be matched together due to problems with lane presence and wave
clear: From now on, it will be very unlikely that you will encounter more
than one of the following heroes on the same Quick Match team:
- Abathur
- Cho’gall
- Lt. Morales
- Murky
- Nova
- The Lost Vikings
As with all of the team composition restrictions we’ve implemented so far,
parties can still bend this rule. This means that you may still see heroes like
Abathur and Cho’gall on the same team if those players entered the queue as a
party.
There are two other exceptions that are worth noting, as well:
- If you are matched against a team that has two of
the above heroes in their composition, such as Abathur and Murky, your team
may also receive two of the listed heroes.
- Auto-Select does not yet abide by the new
restriction. This means that if you have one of the above heroes and an
Auto-Select on your team, the Auto-Select may also become one of the listed
heroes. Auto-Select support for today’s new Quick Match restriction will
arrive with a future patch.

I recently mentioned a breach in our back fence that allowed the Gunnar-man to
get into the neighboring yard. I plan on making a proper repair at some point,
but in the meantime I blocked the opening temporarily with the broken bit of
fence. This worked fine, but recent severe weather knocked it over, which I
discovered when I found him in the neighbor's yard again. It's funny, because he
has zero wanderlust, and will not exit the yard even if the gate is open, but in
this case he clearly seems to feel he has expanded his personal territory into
the next yard, and he seems quite pleased with himself over the situation. It's
good to be the king.
