An update
on Battle.net announces the Overwatch closed beta is going to return
next month, and outlines what will have changed since the beta went offline.
Here's word: After looking through all of the feedback from last year,
one of the things we noticed players consistently mentioning was their desire
for more game modes in Overwatch, in addition to Point Capture and Payload.
Without getting into specifics, we are working on a new game mode. And we’re
very excited about it! And we have some great new maps to support it, too, but
we need a little more time to get everything just right.
Rather than try to rush a beta patch out this month (which would mean the new
game mode would have to be put off), we’re going to take a few extra weeks
before bringing the Closed Beta back. By doing so, we can make sure we can
include the new game mode along with the new maps. This will also allow us to do
some additional polish to the game’s progression and reward system. Though all
these features will still technically be a work-in-progress during the beta,
we’d like them to be at a certain quality bar before releasing them for testing.
This was an easy choice for us to make, and hopefully this post can help you
understand why we made it. I don’t have an exact date for when the Closed Beta
will resume, but right now we’re looking at mid-February (and we don’t intend to
slip out of February). We’ll do our best to provide at least one week’s notice
before we’re ready to get this beta party started again, so definitely keep an
eye on our official channels.

Steam News announces
that early access to
Naval Action for Windows is now underway, offering a chance to
experience the alpha version of Game-Labs' simulation of the days of wooden
ships and iron men. Here's an outline of the level of accuracy they are
pursuing: Enormous open world – Large open world, recreated based
on 18th Century maps, historical harbors, positions, and town names. We do not
believe in the various modern hand-holding markers, thus player position is not
shown on the map: you will have to navigate yourself using compass, sun or
landmarks. PS. battles are instanced to allow extremely complex sailing and
fighting calculations for 50 ship battles.
Freedom – Build ships, trade, sink enemies of your nation. You can attack
anyone almost everywhere. Remember that every action could have consequences. So
don't attack everyone - or you will become a pirate. Conquer almost every port
in the Caribbean, but remember! other adventurous captains will try to ruin your
plans.
Beautiful ships – Accurate hull models, sail plans, guns, internal
upgrades, historical speed, turning and heel performance. Ships from small
cutters to large 100+ gun 1st rates will allow the player to experience every
possible role of the Age of Sail period.
Realistic sailing – Advanced wind and physics model provides for
realistic portrayal of ship’s performance in the age of sail. Yard angles, ship
angle to wind, fittings and ship condition affects speeds and turning rates.
Correct tacking, boxhauling, clubhauling and other elements of the age of sail
sailing are possible. Hidden ship characteristics will allow to gradually
uncover potential of the vessel – every ship in game will be unique.
Ubiblog now offers an interactive map to offer a look at how Manhattan is
depicted in Tom Clancy's The Division. Here's the explanation of the map,
and why it will not help you locate a Starbucks: If you’ve been keeping
up on The Division, then you probably already know its premise: New York City
falls victim to an epidemic that not only wipes out most of its citizens, but
also sparks unprecedented levels of violence and crime. Its infrastructure is
nearly non-existent and the city is on the verge of complete collapse. And now,
thanks to an update on The Division site, you can get a closer look at the
extent of the destruction through an interactive map.
This map lets you take a 360-degree look at what’s going on in the streets of
Manhattan, complete with details and developer insights about key points of
interest that will help you and other Agents prepare for various challenges. All
you need to do is click on a designated point on the map, and you’ll zoom to
street level where you can then explore your surroundings and learn more about
New York’s more dangerous elements, like the not-so-friendly Cleaners – a group
trying to cleanse the streets of Manhattan by setting just about everything on
fire.

Paradox Interactive announces the Conclave expansion for Crusader Kings II will
be released on February 2nd, adding new political machinations to the grand
strategy game. They celebrate the news with an outline of what to expect: Your
chancellor wants you to press his claim on a neighboring county. Your marshal is
a bit of an incompetent. And no one thinks you should execute your uncle, like
you had planned to – even though he’s a nasty rebel. Difficult problems with
easy solutions? Not quite.
Crusader Kings II: Conclave, the newest expansion for Paradox Development
Studio’s celebrated medieval grand-strategy game, will bring out the politician,
diplomat or tyrant in you as your royal council demands to be heard – and the
loudest voices demand a seat at the table. Paradox is happy to announce that
this new expansion will be on February 2, 2016.
Conclave adds greater depth to ruling your realm with a host of new laws and
council interactions. Will you placate your vassals by giving them a say in
matters of war and peace? Will you raise the status of women in your kingdom by
recognizing their right to inherit lands and title? Can you find a place on
council for that one duke who has too many armies to ignore, but no talent for
anything?
This expansion will also increase the importance of marriage alliances,
introduce systems to block rapid overexpansion, and allow you to rent out some
of your soldiers as mercenaries – just because you’re not at war doesn’t mean
you can’t make a ducat or two off someone else’s aggression.
So mark the date on your calendar – February 2, 2016: the day that Crusader
Kings II challenges you to up your king game. Be ready for Conclave. It will be
available from major digital retailers and the Paradox store for $14.99, 10.99
GBP or 14.99 Euros.
An
interview on GameSpot with Dustin Browder discusses the next two heroes
coming to Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard's MOBA. As surmised, these will
be Diablo's Necromancer and Wizard, with the Necromancer the game's first Diablo
II-specific character. Dustin discusses the characters and their kits, as well
as the challenges of matching older art to the game, and the difficulty of
recreating some elements of their Diablo style in Heroes.
HeroesNexus lists Necromancer and Wizard abilities data-mined from
yesterday's patch.
Nintendo's announcement of
Mortal Kombat XL includes word of a new Kombat Pack 2 for Mortal Kombat X
for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but no word on this coming to the PC edition of
the brawler sequel. A post on
the Test Your Might forums has what seems to be a confirmation from
developer Netherrealm Studios that no Windows version of this pack is coming.
This has, not unexpectedly, led to backlash
on Steam, where the game
is receiving a new influx of negative reviews. Thanks
Eurogamer.
I'm a little off schedule the past few days. Sorry, I'm working on a course
correction. :)
