The StarWraith
Website has news of the release of Evochron Legacy, the latest in the
Evochron series of freeform space games (thanks PunkiBastardo). This is
available on the
developer's website and
on Steam, and owners of Evochron Mercenary may be entitled to a loyalty
discount (details on that can be found
on
this page). The developer's take on all this can be found in
this blog
post, and here's a bit of that: What the game is and what it isn't
will, in general, remain true to the original Evochron formula. The game will
remain a tightly focused technical flight 'space-sim' with options and gameplay
specifically geared toward that objective. As a technical space flight
simulation, it will focus on what flying and managing a spacecraft as a
lone-wolf pilot might be like in the future. Options for trade, racing, combat,
exploration, and crafting will continue to be available. And in many cases,
these elements have been greatly expanded as well as offer entirely new options
not previously available in earlier games. The new game will continue to focus
on various simulation aspects related to ship systems, physics management,
weapon systems, flight controls, open space 3D navigation systems, and tactical
technologies.
Ubiblog
announces the release of Wildwater Bay, new free DLC for Anno 2205. Word is
this has fixes for the RTS sequel, and will be followed by the first paid DLC
for the game: Blue Byte has announced that the first DLC for Anno 2205 is
now available, and it’s free. Called Wildwater Bay, the DLC features a new
Temperate Earth session that weighs in at about 100,000 acres, making it one of
Anno 2205’s biggest maps. Additionally, the new sector quest in Wildwater Bay
puts you on the path to discovering what happened to the abandoned underwater
cities that appeared in a previous Anno game.
Along with the improvements and fixes featured in the patch that comes with the
Wildwater Bay DLC, there are three new ornaments, as well as a new Corporation
HQ ability that increases your overall public building supply capacity. There’s
also a clearer World Market interface and special “Big 5″ events that will help
line your pockets.
Wildwater Bay’s release will be followed by the first paid DLC for Anno 2205,
the Tundra expansion, which comes as a part of the season pass but can also be
purchased separately when it arrives in February.
A new January update is now live in The Crew: Wild Run, adding a bunch of
new features to the open-world driving game expansion.
This previous post has the exact details on all this includes, and the
accompanying patch has an overview: If you’ve been yearning for more
high-speed challenges to conquer in The Crew Wild Run, then here’s some great
news: the expansion gets its first big update of 2016 today, adding new Summit
events, a new challenge mode, the ability to take your own customizable
screenshots and more.
The biggest new addition is Photo Mode, which lets players freeze the screen and
edit the image to their liking by adding visual effects, rotating the shot or
even changing the weather, time of day and their car’s condition. Also, the
Hummer H1 Alpha has been added to the Monster Truck spec, and the Lotus Evora
GTE – previously a prize awarded in the Summit tournament – is now available for
purchase. Replacing it as the new Summit reward is the BMW R1200GS Adventure, an
all-terrain motorbike suited for excursions across bumpy terrain – and you now
have a better chances of winning it, with each participation in a Summit
qualifier granting a 5% bonus chance of success.
On January 25, a new challenge will open up at the Summit: Speedtrap Mode, in
which you’ll be tasked with finding a route that lets you roar past speed
checkpoints at maximum velocity. In addition to the new content, the update also
adds a number of fixes and improvements that are based on player feedback. For a
full rundown,
check out the official site.
A new patch is now live in Heroes of the Storm, updating Blizzard's MOBA
with the promised changes
intended to tame the game's stun-heavy gameplay a bit. There are balance changes
to specific characters, and a change to the "Cleanse" talent at the heart of the
changes. The description for this now reads: "Target ally now becomes
Unstoppable for 1 second. 60 second cooldown."
This post
has the complete patch notes. Also,
this post
from Community Manager Spyrian says to expect more frequent balance updates
going forward, typically on Wednesdays, though they are not promising them on a
weekly basis: We're going to start releasing balance updates more often,
though not necessarily every week. Today's patch is the first of these balance
updates, and you can typically expect to see them released on Wednesdays going
forward.
There's a new trailer for
Far
Cry Primal on
UbiBlog with a look a Turok, we mean Takkar, the protagonist in the upcoming
game of primitive survival. Here's word: Up until this point, we’ve
revealed glimpses of
what Far Cry Primal’s narrative is about: a hunter named Takkar survives the
massacre of his clan, and rebuilds the Wenja tribe by befriending dangerous
animals and battling rival factions. In the latest trailer, however, we get a
better look at the people and events surrounding Takkar, with a special focus on
a scarred man who calls himself Ull and doesn’t seem especially friendly.
The world that Takkar and Ull inhabit is filled with peril, and the trailer also
offers a better look at brutal enemy warriors, hungry predators and one of
Takkar’s more unique
allies, a giant owl who spies on his enemies from above. Expect to see more
in the weeks ahead, as we near Far Cry Primal’s February 23 launch date on PS4
and Xbox One, and March 1 on PC. Continue here to read the full story.
Epic's MOBA Paragon is on display in a
new trailer showing
off a mid-lane push. Word is: "The new gameplay video featuring Gadget and Feng
Mao pushing down mid-lane, while Rampage rushes to defend, setting up a gank
from the Assassin Kallari." Continue here to read the full story.
Bloodirony and Daedalic Entertainment announce the release of Shooting Stars,
their roguelike featuring a hipster cat with frikkin' laser beams coming out of
her eyes. This is available for Windows and OS X
on Steam, and
this trailer shows off
the craziness this involves. Here's a bit more: Tscherno the hipster,
armed with a laser-eyed cat and a hoverboard, is on a mission to save humanity
from aliens. These aliens disguise themselves as celebrities and are out for
world domination. They pose as Hollywood actors, popstars, Youtube personalities
or meme characters and subtly influence mankind.
Tscherno and his cat plan to put an end to this: The fierce feline shoots lasers
from her eyes to stop enemies and with the help of power-ups she can even use
stronger weapons -- like the MEGA RAINBOW LAZER, a multi-colored multi-mortal
multibeam! Continue here to read the full story.

Blaze's Security Blog warns of some Chrome extensions for Counter-Strike:
Global Offensive players that hide harmful behavior behind "helpful"
veneers. The post outlines which specific extensions to avoid, but this also
serves as a warning of a larger issue, as it notes that many of the extensions
are still available through the Chrome store, even though they've already been
reported, so it does not seem like app curation protects very well against such
scams. Thanks

I got a helpful note from a reader last week pointing out that the hardware
review section had become a bit less informative in recent years, as many of the
listings stopped specifying the hardware being tested. This is because over time I started just using the existing listing on each site for reviews, and
they can be wildly inconsistent in how they categorize products. Obviously
knowing a CrapTech 3200XL is a mouse and not a case is helpful, so I will return
to trying to make sure each listing is self-explanatory. Of course that's a bad
example, because everyone knows CrapTech doesn't make cases (duh), but you get
the idea.
