3D Realms and Interceptor Entertainment announce the completion of Bombshell, noting that this is the first game from 3D Realms to go gold in over a decade (we presume the reference is to Prey), and the game's Steam page reflects its January 29th release date. The most recent trailer from the project highlights its soundtrack, and word is this will be sold separately on iTunes. Here' the description from the Bombshell website:

From the creators of 2013's Rise of the Triad and legendary game maker 3D Realms comes Bombshell, an isometric action role-playing game for PC and consoles. Bomb disposal technician turned mercenary for hire, Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison must strong-arm her way across 4 planets in an Unreal Engine-powered galactic adventure to rescue the president from an apocalyptic alien threat. With out-of-this-world enemies, a never-before-seen arsenal of devastating weaponry and a host of genre-crossing mechanics, Bombshell is set to blow you away.

Cities Skylines Snowfall Announced

Paradox Interactive announces winter is coming to Cities Skylines, announcing Snowfall, an upcoming expansion for the urban planning game. This reveal trailer shows off the impact this change in seasons has on the game's environments, and our invocation of the Game of Thrones quote is about the only pun left unturned in their announcement of the plan:

Paradox Interactive, a seasoned publisher of games, today announced the newest expansion to Cities: Skylines, the best-selling city-builder from Colossal Order. The new expansion is titled “Snowfall” and will be available for players of Cities: Skylines on Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs later this year. Snowfall will allow mayor-players to expand and grow their cities using new transportation options while challenging them to meet citizens’ needs using several new in-game tools. All of these new inclusions will revolve around the expansion’s central feature: an in-game weather system.

Watch the Snowfall trailer and add your participation to our precipitation.

In Snowfall, the difficulty heats up when the city cools down, thanks to a new in-game temperature reading that will have residents bundling up for warmth when the weather outside is frightful. Cosmetic weather, composed of rain and fog, will be added to Cities: Skylines as part of a free update, along with other features to be announced soon. Players who own Snowfall will get to face new challenges such as ensuring that their city infrastructure can handle seasonal heating demands – and, when the snow starts falling, that the roads can stay clear. New snowplow services will be required to prevent traffic from freezing in place, while new all-weather trams and expanded public transit options can help residents and visitors alike get around town – and visit the new winter parks and landmarks available in Snowfall.

Snowfall will include:

  • Now is the Winter of This Content: Rain and fog for existing maps, plus a new “Winter” map theme with snow and all of its challenges
  • The Streetcars You Desire: Expanded public transportation options, including easier management of existing lines – and Trams, a new system demanded by fans
  • World Warmth, Too: Cold weather increases demands for electricity, unless new water-based heat systems are in place
  • Plowers to the People: Build a snowplow depot to keep traffic flowing during winter weather, and employ new road maintenance systems to keep your streets in shape
  • New Chirps: #yeahthereare

Metal Gear Online Online

Following the mixed success of the Metal Gear Online beta test, Konami has officially launched the PC edition of Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer extension of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Here's word:

Given the right platform, the right game, any player can be shaped into an online player.

The Beta has officially concluded and the game is now available for launch.
We took in a lot of feedback and made a few key adjustments. After some initial hiccups we’re going forward guns at the ready. However that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped development, quite the contrary. Just like the previously released console versions of MGO, we’ll be integrating new updates to the game to improve the experience and add content.

Building the future and keeping MGO alive are one and the same thing.

If you didn’t get a chance to check out the MGO beta last week, we have a little extra incentive planned. Check out the game and jump into minimum one (1) match between 1/19-1/26 and we’ll reward you with a bonus 3000 GEAR POINTS (GP) to help you customize your brand new characters’ gear style.

We’re excited to see a brand new burgeoning pvp community on PC with Metal Gear Online. It’s likewise thrilling to add another community of players to our upcoming MGO DLC and update plans. 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for MGO, and with your continued support we’ll take it even further!

This is the online game we’ve won for ourselves: MGO!

Minecraft: Education Edition Announced

Mojang announces Minecraft: Education Edition, offering more digital blocks to students. Here's the plan:

News from a slightly different, arguably smarter, place today. We’re announcing Minecraft: Education Edition.

Of course, every Minecraft player learns essential life-skills like tree-punching and good Creeper-defence but, when used in the right way, Minecraft can help people around the world to learn lots more.

Over the past few years, educators around the world have been using Minecraft to explore subjects that might not spring to mind when you think of our block-based game. Since 2011, MinecraftEdu - a version of Minecraft built for the classroom - has been used in over 40 countries. Lots of people have learned loads of things since then.

Microsoft has acquired MinecraftEdu and is building upon its proven success to create a new version of Minecraft that’s dedicated to learning. The new title will be available as a free trial this summer. All existing MinecraftEdu customers will get the first year of Minecraft: Education Edition free of charge.

It’s going to be a collaborative thing. Development of Minecraft: Education Edition will be shaped by a community of educators thanks to education.minecraft.net.. The site will host lesson plans and give Minecraft: Education Edition users somewhere to discuss ideas and provide feedback. We know teachers can be a rowdy bunch, so we’re looking into the best ways to moderate the forums as I type. Wish us luck.

For more on Minecraft: Education Edition, check out this postpost (which comes with bonus quotes), or visit the official page.

Out of the Blue

I was cruising along in our NFL playoff pool though the first six games, but the Carolina game was my Waterloo. I'm still within a few points of the top spot, but Seattle was my pick to win the Super Bowl, so my bracket isn't just busted, it's obliterated. I also lost on the Steelers, which I could have survived, but I have only one more potential victory in the three remaining contests. I'm not complaining, though. The playoffs have produced some amazing games, and the entertainment value has been off the charts. Congrats and good luck to those still in contention.
