Polygon has a translation of a report in
Nikkei
confirming that Hideo Kojima officially left Konami as of today, and is in the
process of establishing his own studio. Rumors have been flying for months about
the future of the famed designer of the Metal Gear Solid series, and this is not
the first "confirmation" of his departure, but the relationship there seems to
be ruined, with the most recent news on the situation being word
that Konami prevented Kojima from attending the recent game awards. Thanks

Blizzard announces the release of a new patch for Heroes of the Storm,
offering these patch
notes for the new version. This introduces the new Lunara hero, and
this page has details
on the new character. The new version also introduces their first pass at an
improved matchmaking system, and
this article has
details on how that has changed. Here's a bit: As a result of these
changes, the Heroes matchmaker will now much more effectively group you with
allies and opponents that have very similar matchmaking ratings (MMR) to your
own, creating games that are fair for both sides. This will also affect Ranked
play, and you may notice that all players in your Hero and Team League games are
much closer in terms of Ranking. While initial data from live games indicates
that we’re well on our way to accomplishing these goals, we’re going to continue
monitoring the new system and make additional improvements as necessary.

Slate - Star Wars Battlefront represents the beginning of a new dark era in
Star Wars video games. Thanks Matthew.
"Licensed video games that come out alongside big-budget movies are, with
rare exceptions, notoriously shoddy. Star Wars avoided this reputation,
surely, because for decades there were no movies with marketing calendars
for the video games to serve (or, for one brief period, movies so bad that
many video game fans had no interest in their associated games). With
projections for an annual Disney release of a Star Wars movie from now until
the end of time, it’s hard to imagine that the next developers to be awarded
a Star Wars license won’t face a new set of restrictions aimed at protecting
the brand. Here’s hoping some of them manage to break out of the movies’
grip, even if—especially if—The Force Awakens is as good as we want it to
be."
Crytek announces The Climb, an upcoming game that will give a first-hand
look at the world of rock climbing game though Oculus Rift virtual reality
headsets. They offer this
teaser trailer to show how this plays out, featuring beautiful landscapes
and disembodied hands (and thankfully none of that double-vision binocular
view). More details can be found on the
official The Climb website, and here's the announcement: Feel the
unrivaled adrenaline rush of free solo rock climbing and encounter the majesty
of nature like never before in The Climb – a new virtual reality game from
Crytek coming exclusively to Oculus.
The Climb invites thrill-seekers to experience the ultimate in extreme sports by
going beyond the point of no return and scaling deadly cliff faces unaided. The
game boasts hyper-realistic climbing locations from around the world, and
players will discover the freedom of gaming with the Rift using either an Xbox
One controller or Oculus Touch controllers as they soak up their awe-inspiring
surroundings.
Oculus Head of Worldwide Studios, Jason Rubin, said: “Crytek is renowned for
leveraging their CRYENGINE tech to create beautiful, immersive games. Their
early VR demos really captured public imagination, and to see their ideas come
to life with Rift is incredible and not to be missed. The Climb is a beautiful
combination of art and thrill that’s bringing an entirely new level of adventure
gaming to Rift.”
Also commenting on the collaboration, Founder, CEO & President of Crytek, Cevat
Yerli, said: “Gaming has always given us the opportunity to place ourselves in
otherwise impossible scenarios, and VR technology such as the Rift makes us feel
present in those scenarios like never before. The Climb invites players to
experience the intensity of one of the world’s most dangerous sports, and
they’ll truly feel the thrill of being thousands of meters above the ground with
nothing but their skill and a few precarious handholds to rely
on.” Continue here to read the full story.
The
Assassin's Creed Syndicate website has
a new trailer
showing off the Jack the Ripper DLC that's part of a season's pass for the
action/adventure sequel. This is available today for consoles and will come in
one week to PCs. The trailer highlights VR support in the add-on, as it
offers a 360 degree view of a slow motion run through Victorian London. Here's
word on the DLC and the trailer: Featuring the infamous namesake of the
DLC, the trailer takes you through the gritty streets of Victorian London and
plunges viewers into Jack’s grisly world. This trailer is currently available in
its full VR form for the Samsung Gear VR platform, but if don't have that
hardware and still want to get a taste of the experience, you can view it
through YouTube and Facebook's 360 video player.
The Jack the Ripper trailer provides insight into how Ubisoft imagines the
future of storytelling through the unique immersion VR provides. "Nicolas
[Bouchet] and I started working on this as a test to see how we could adapt a
trailer to offer a true VR experience," says Adrian Lacey, Director of IP
Development at Ubisoft Montpelier. "Originally, we hadn’t planned on releasing
it, but the results were so good we had to share it. The Jack the Ripper VR
trailer is just a small taste of what virtual reality can bring, both in terms
of storytelling and how it can help players go deeper into our worlds." Continue here to read the full story.
Slitherine announces the release of US Rangers, a new add-on for Heroes of Normandie, the World War II strategy game. This can be found on
this product section,
where word is: "Heroes of Normandie: US Rangers is the first expansion for the
acclaimed and fast paced tactical game Heroes of Normandie. It brings
reinforcements to the American player allowing them to continue the advance into
occupied Europe: the stubborn US Rangers!" The release is accompanied by a new patch for the game that adds a mission
editor along with fixes and changes.
This trailer shows
off the editor, and here's more: Today a new era starts for the fans of
Heroes of Normandie with the release of a map/scenario editor that allows
everyone to create missions in a very simple and effective way. The developers
really took their time in order to provide a user-friendly tool, able to be used
by any member of the community. As a result there is no need to have programming
or scripting skills to make a scenario. Creativity is the key here, so players
who like experimenting with tiles, units, buildings and objectives will
certainly design original scenarios that could be shared and played in
singleplayer and multiplayer modes! Continue here to read the full story.

It's an interesting TV season, as I currently have only two shows that I care
about at all, but they are so good, it more than makes up in quality what it
lacks in quantity. I've raved before about Ash vs Evil Dead, and nothing has
changed there. The other is The Knick, and as much as I liked its debut, the
second season has taken it to a whole new level. I am hanging on every minute,
and more than a little bummed that the season only has one more episode.
