Giants: Citizen
Kabuto is now available for free on GOG.com as part of their Big Winter
Finale Sale (thanks
Rock, Paper, Shotgun via nin). The freebie can be claimed by scrolling to
almost the very bottom of their main page,
and as this is a DRM-free game, there are no strings attached. Since it's been
over 15 years since the initial release of Planet Moon Studios' offbeat action
game, here's a refresher: Before man climbed down from the trees to shop
in megastores and drink cappuccino, before the Earth wadded itself into a cool
blue ball, before the Moon even existed, there was the Island. The Island, a
massive fragment of a long-lost planet, hurtling blindly through space. Upon the
surface of this paradise wanders the giant, Kabuto. Little does Kabuto know that
the Island was home to others before him. In the oceans, there dwells a
matriarchal race called the Sea Reapers. In their pride, they created Kabuto, as
a defense against intruders. But Kabuto became conscious of himself, his
loneliness, his pain - and he went berserk.
Space castaways, the Meccs piloted their ship through space, looking for their
missing friends. If you haven’t guessed already, they ended up on the Island.
Faced with yet another unscheduled layover while on their way to Planet Majorca,
the Meccs decide to make the best of their temporary home. Just their luck - the
natives are already embroiled in their own little war, and the Mecc visitors are
most unwelcome!
The
Roberts Space Industries website announces the release of Alpha 2.0 of
Star Citizen for all backers of Cloud Imperium's space combat game. They
call this the biggest update yet to the game, as it adds a new environment,
first-person battles, new ships, spaceflight, and more. Here's the intro: "Star
Citizen Alpha 2.0 is here! Today, we are proud to make the next major step in
Star Citizen’s evolution available to all players. This major update to Star
Citizen is available now in your launcher. With Alpha 2.0, we introduce a wide
swath of features, including large world maps, multi-crew ships, seamless first
person combat, missions and much more. In short: this is the biggest update to
Star Citizen yet!" Thanks Tumbler.
Cubical Drift announces a new title for the space game formerly known as
Planets³, saying the game is henceforth to be known as Stellar Overlord.
Here's their statement on the news: "After much deliberation, we've
chosen Stellar Overload as the new name for Planets³! We feel that the new name
really reflects what we're aiming to achieve with the project and we'd also like
to share with you, today, the solar system in which the game is based." said
Michel Thomazeau, project director at Cubical Drift. "Stellar Overload is the
name of an in-game cosmic cataclysm which caused mass extinction throughout our
solar system. When did it happen? Why? Even our elders have no answers. The only
thing we know for certain is that every day’s a fight for survival since the
event. United against the alien invaders, and their infernal machines, we - the
last survivors of the human race, have chosen our destiny. We will Fight,
Survive and Rebuild!"
Gearbox Software announces the launch of Gearbox Studio Quebec, saying the
goal of the new Canadian branch is "enhancing Gearbox Software’s mission to
entertain the world." They put out the call for prospective employees, and say
they will gear up "to full AAA production capability" through next year.
Some
Star Wars Battlefront Real Life Mod footage shows off the action game in 4K
using the SweetFX mod that polishes up the visuals to a startling degree (thanks
Ant) . It looks like the mod itself can be
found here, though it's
not clear if the version in the video is currently available, as word is: "Star
Wars Battlefront Real Life Mod - All footage is recorded at 4K 60FPS using a
modified version of SweetFX." Thanks Ant. Continue here to read the full story.
A post called
Damage Control on the Counter-Strike blog has word that Valve has already
nerfed the new revolver included in
the recent Winter
Update for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, their teamplay shooter. They
explain they would normally gather more information before making such a move,
but this situation did not require a lot of extra reflection: While it
typically takes more time to generate enough data to drive an update (and
gameplay updates are always a bit disruptive), in this case it’s clear that we
got the damage wrong and can respond immediately.
So today we’re updating the R8 Revolver to bring its values to be more in line
with other weapons: among other changes, its damage has been reduced and it
takes slightly longer to fire.
As experience with other new weapons (e.g., CZ75a and M4A1-S) has shown us, it
may require several iterations over a longer period to find the stable values
that create interesting strategic choices for players. We’re committed to
monitoring usage and adjusting the values as required.
Darewise Entertainment announces Rokh, a multiplayer survival game set on
Mars in development at Nvizzio Creations, said to be a spinoff of the team at
Funcom that created Age of Conan. The Rokh
website is online with more on the project, including
this announcement teaser
trailer showing off the game's Unreal Engine 4 graphics. Here's an
introduction to the project: Rokh is a futuristic sandbox survival
experience, deeply rooted in scientific and authentic anticipation, where
players will have to work together to overcome the numerous challenges they will
face on planet Mars.
It is a persistent multiplayer game where everything proceeds from simulation
and systems interaction instead of classic script-based interactions.
In the game, the only resources players have against hunger, thirst, the lack of
atmosphere and radiation are creativity and cooperation.
Rokh brings an extensive crafting system - including housing, chemistry,
programmation, robotics. To promote real social and economic dynamics between
the colonists, these systems are designed to be impossible to be mastered by a
single player.
The game will be powered by Unreal Engine 4 and will simulate dynamic weather,
radiation spreads as well as differences in atmospheric pressure.
The December patch is now live in Path of Exile, updating Grinding Gears'
action/RPG to version 2.1.0. This introduces Rigwald, the Wolven King (of the
Brat Pack) and kicks off standard and hardcore versions of the new Talisman
Challenge Leagues, which put new and veteran players on equal footing by
offering new content on fresh servers. Here's more on the release: Circles
of floating stones, assembled by ancient Ezomyte Druids, are now part of the
landscape of Wraeclast in the Talisman leagues. Players can sacrifice sets of
five different Talismans from a similar tier to summon a powerful possessed
monster. Defeating the summoned creature allows the player to claim the new,
higher-tier Talisman.
Content Update 2.1.0 also introduces Rigwald, the Wolven King, a new end-game
boss that poses a lethal threat to Path of Exile players. Possessed by the
greatest of Talismans, the Wolven King provides the ultimate challenge but also
yields a substantial prize to the players that can defeat him.
As with any Path of Exile update, 2.1.0 features a cornucopia of new unique
items, support gems, and spells. Additionally, this update will increase the
variety of skills available for bow users and dramatically increase options
available to poison-based characters.

I got the second part of my annual physical this week, and thankfully received a
clean bill of health, minus a copayment, of course, along with my annual flu
inoculation, because I don't like getting sick. I'm okay with needles, but the
shot was extra painless anyway, at least at the time. The next day, however, the
arm where I got the shot felt like it had been shot. I don't even know what to
make of that, as there's no black-and-blue mark or anything. It's like I have a
case of the arm flu.
