on Steam, offering the
latest installment in Sports Interactive's association football/soccer series,

Blizzard tweets about the early success of Legacy of the Void, their
just-released conclusion of the StarCraft II trilogy. Word is the
real-time strategy game has already sold over one million units. They offer
their gratitude, saying: "Thanks for making the launch of #LotV a success! We’ll
see you in the Koprulu Sector, Commanders!" Thanks

Almost forgot to wish everyone a happy Odd Couple day. After all, on
November 13th, Felix Unger was asked to remove itself from his place of
residence. That request... came from his wife. Here's to one of the great
sitcoms in TV history.

Bethesda Softworks announces the "successful" launch of Fallout 4, and by
successful, they mean that the post-apocalyptic RPG sequel shipped about 12
million units its first day of availability, though they don't state how many
copies were sold. They also say this represents "record" sales, though they do
not report any specific record the game has broken. "We’re extremely proud of
Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, and his experienced team of
developers for their talent and dedication in creating this extraordinary game,"
said Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks. "Fallout 4 is a
masterpiece in game development and storytelling, providing fans hundreds of
hours of fun as they explore and are challenged by this fascinating, beautifully
crafted world." Here's what they say about the release: Bethesda
Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that its award-winning
game, Fallout® 4, is generating record sales at retail outlets and via digital
download for Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and PC.
Bethesda launched with approximately 12 million units worldwide to meet day one
demand, representing sales in excess of $750 million. The collector’s edition,
the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy™ Edition, sold out within hours of its announced
availability.
Major retailers have informed Bethesda of the tremendous consumer interest in
Fallout 4, with some noting it was the most pre-ordered game this year. In
addition, the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition was the fastest-selling collector’s
edition of any game in history at leading retailers. Following the release,
Bethesda was advised that launch day sales at some of the leading retail chains
were the largest of any game released this year. Bethesda is now shipping more
Fallout 4 units to retailers to meet ongoing market demand.
Digital sales of Fallout 4 are also breaking records. On Steam, Fallout 4 became
the number one game played, surpassing the previous record for concurrent play
with over 470,000 Fallout players. The companion app, Fallout Pip-Boy, became
the number one game on the iTunes App Store. Fallout 4 also set the record as
the most viewed game launch of all 2015 games, according to Twitch.
RollerCoaster Tycoon World blog announces a delay to RollerCoaster Tycoon
World, a setback that can be attributed to the ups and downs of game
development. The game was previously
expected next month, but
word is that after closed beta feedback they are going to take some extra time,
and now project that the theme park game will arrive in "early 2016." Here's
more: Many of you loved the game, some found certain aspects frustrating,
and you all had tons of thoughtful suggestions for improvements. Based on your
feedback and our own internal processes, here is a short list of features that
will significantly improve the final product: easier “predefined piece” coaster
building, additional coaster test feedback, a robust fencing tool, improved
on-demand grid, and various smaller improvements.
To accommodate these improvements, and ensure that RollerCoaster Tycoon World
will be the best, most innovative RCT experience to date, we will launch the
game in early 2016. The new launch date will be communicated after the second
preview.
Our highest priority has always been to release a game that we’re proud of, one
that lives up to the lofty standards set by the previous titles. With this new
timing we will be able to do just that – deliver a robust tycoon experience
along with additional layers of polishing and tweaks that the extra time affords
us.
This Steam Community post states that some of the community moderators for
PAYDAY 2 are refusing to work until they can get a public dialog from
someone at developer Overkill about their concerns about
the microtransactions that were added
to the game despite promises to the contrary. The microtransactions
were tweaked based on the
controversy, but word is there are still concerns they want to discuss: I
like to believe that i am not unreasonable but unfortunately the situation
constantly degraded. We will no longer refuse to work if we are given a public
interview with a member of Overkill. We want to be heard and see what Overkill
are willing to do to fix the situation.
If Overkill decides to let us go as moderators it's something we are prepared
for, i personally cannot sit by when they continue to promote immoral business
practices. I felt the skins system needed work but could function. The recent
safe update showed against that.
I'm very sorry that it has come to this situation but the stress we have had to
manage with, coupled with our unhappiness with the situation has pushed us to
make this choice. I am not sure what Tessio feels about this so please do not
insult, attack or involve him unless he wants to be involved.
There is a dustup underway on reddit where
this thread states that one or more moderators from the
Star Wars:
Battlefront reddit have been removed from their positions for
impropriety.
This post links to
an article on CraveOnline discussing the situation, though this is labeled
by reddit as "misleading."
This reddit post from a former mod outlines the accusations at the root of
all of this, saying that EA representatives were able to exert undue influence
on the moderation and removal of posts in exchange for perks like closed alpha
access and other incentives. There are also many arguing that there's nothing to
see here, and that community managers will always seek to influence community
posts, that deleted posts were in violation of NDAs, and that offering the
reddit mods alpha access is appropriate to their prominent positions in the
community. Thanks Joao.
Ars Technica has put Valve's SteamOS to the test, benchmarking a few games
running under the Linux derivative versus the same games running under Windows
10. Though SteamOS was introduced with the promise of performance improvements
over Windows, so far this has not proven to be the case, as Ars reports
framerates dropping from 21- to 58-percent for some games under SteamOS. It's
probably inappropriate to draw final conclusions from these early results, and
this portion covers the discrepancies and tries to put them in perspective:
While these are two AAA games ported to Linux by respected publishers,
it's possible the developers simply weren't able to extract the best performance
from the less familiar OpenGL and Linux environment. We figured that Valve's own
games wouldn't have this problem; if anyone could get the maximum performance
out of its Linux ports, it should be the company behind SteamOS itself.
Unfortunately, Valve's own Source engine games showed the same performance hit
when compared to their Windows versions. Portal, Team Fortress 2, and DOTA 2 all
took massive frame rate dips on SteamOS compared to their Windows counterparts;
only Left 4 Dead 2 showed comparable performance between the two operating
systems (though there's no sign of those SteamOS frame rate improvements Valve
cited years ago).
Happy Friday the 13th! Here's hoping this brings you all sorts of good luck.
That's appropriate, since I actually kind of like the occasion. I guess that's
not too surprising from someone who once owned a black cat.
