Steam Item Stores

A new Rust Item Store on Steam offers the chance to buy cosmetic items for real cash for use in Rust, the early access zombie game, apparently the first of many such game-specific item stores. These items are also offered on the marketplace, and prices can be markedly higher or lower, and PC Gamer explains that items will come and go from the store, but the eventual plan is for this to be a store for community created items. There's more on this on garry's blofg, where Rust creator Garry Newman describes why he considers these kinds of microtransactions a win-win situation, concluding with: "When you see the system up close and far away, it’s a total no-brainer. In fact I would go as far as to say that by not being involved in the marketplace we’re screwing our community."

Supernova Closed Beta

BANDAI NAMCO announces plans for a second closed beta test of Supernova, and they encourage anyone interested in checking out the upcoming MOBA to head over to the Supernova website and register as a prospective tester. New GeForce Drivers

The GeForce website now offers new version 358.87 WHQL-certified, game-ready drivers, saying these are the drivers they recommend to play Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Word is: "With Game Ready optimizations for Treyarch's highly-anticipated fast-paced first-person shooter, our new drivers will give you the best possible experience when battling foes and capturing gameplay footage with GeForce Experience and ShadowPlay." They also have a new article up saying the GTX 970 is their recommended GPU for the game, but sadly, they are not offered as free downloads like the drivers.

On Fallout 4's Graphics

A new article on Bethesda.net discusses the graphics technology of Fallout 4, the imminent RPG sequel. They explain how they implemented a physically based deferred renderer to the Creation Engine following the release of Skyrim, and discuss the advantages this provides. Here's their summary of what's new:
The player can go anywhere in the world at any time of day, so we added dynamic post-process techniques that enhance the vibrancy and color of our scenery for maximum emotional impact. Our virtual cameras received a major upgrade as well. We’re not going to spoil every improvement we’ve made, but for those of you who enjoy the technical details, here’s a sampling of what we’ve added to the latest version of the Creation Engine:

  • Tiled Deferred Lighting
  • Temporal Anti-Aliasing
  • Screen Space Reflections
  • Bokeh Depth of Field
  • Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
  • Height Fog
  • Motion Blur
  • Filmic Tonemapping
  • Custom Skin and Hair Shading
  • Dynamic Dismemberment using Hardware Tessellation
  • Volumetric Lighting
  • Gamma Correct Physically Based Shading

Ubisoft Financials

Ubisoft has released their latest financial reporting, covering the first half of their fiscal 2015-2016 year. They report an "above target" €207.3 million in sales, a growing proportion of revenue from the digital segment, and confirm their full year targets. "The quality of our back-catalog and the growing digitization of our business enabled us to deliver a solid performance in the first half of the year, even though – as planned – we did not release any major titles during the period explains CEO Yves Guillemot. "The fact that more than 80% of our annual sales are expected to be generated in the second half of the year mechanically weighed on our earnings for the first six months."

No More WoW Numbers

Activision Blizzard says they will no longer announce subscriber counts for World of Warcraft, their subscription MMORPG. In yesterday's financial reporting they revealed the game is down to 5.5 million subscribers, which is still impressive, but well under half the game's peak. With their user count getting smaller every time around, they no longer feel this is in their best interests to continue publicizing the game's gradual decline. GameSpot quotes how they explained this during their post-earnings conference call: "Note that this is the last quarter that we plan to provide subscriber numbers," the company said. "There are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance."

Kojima Productions Los Angeles Closure Confirmed

Konami has confirmed the rumor reported yesterday that they have shut down Kojima Productions Los Angeles, their U.S. studio. They have made an official statement on the situation to Polygon:
Konami has made the decision to close its Los Angeles Studio, effective immediately, due to the product development resources being restructured into a more centralized unit. This facility contributed to the recent Metal Gear Solid games. Konami will continue its operations to support all Metal Gear Solid titles, including the recently launched Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Online. Metal Gear Online is still scheduled to release for PC Steam in January 2016.

The Los Angeles studio emphasizes Konami and Kojima Productions commitment to expanding our development footprint," Konami Digital Entertainment president Tomoyuki Tsuboi said when the studio opened. "The new studio will put Kojima Productions in the heart of the west which will benefit future releases as it will introduce new talent and creativity to the development teams.

Out of the Blue

I recently mentioned how much I enjoyed the first season of Blunt Talk, but the good news in the wake of that concluding is that Ash vs. Evil Dead has debuted. Based on the subject and the participation of both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi this held plenty of promise, but the first episode was even better than I could have hoped, so I am greatly looking forward to that continuing. Yes, Starz is totally killing it right now. Groovy!
