A
Steam Community Group Announcement celebrates the release of The Age of
Decadence on Steam,
an isometric, turn-based RPG for Windows from Iron Tower Studio (thanks Andrew).
The game carries a 10% launch discount, and here's word on the release where
they invoke a quote from a different kind of RPG: The Age of Decadence,
our first but hopefully not the last RPG, is now available. If you've been
following it or playing it in Early Access, you know what to expect (if you did
play an earlier version, please delete prefs.cs file from your Documents/My
Games/Age of Decadence folder before starting a new game). If you've just
discovered it, "stay awhile and listen".
The most commonly asked question is:
What Kind of Game Is It?
It’s a very different game than anything you’ve ever played. I’m sure you’ve
noticed that the RPG genre hasn’t really been explored yet and most RPGs follow
the formula that didn’t change in 20 years. While there were always games that
strayed off the beaten path – Darklands, Planescape: Torment, King of Dragon
Pass – such games were the exceptions that only reinforced the rule.
The Age of Decadence is an experiment, an attempt to explore a different
direction, taking you back to the PnP roots of the genre. It doesn’t mean that
the game is awesome. In fact, there is a good chance that you won’t like it,
precisely because we took too many liberties with the established design.
A Battle.net
forum thread points to
a reddit post from Srey, at the time the #1 rated North American Hero League
player in Heroes of the Storm, who gives a thoughts on the game from his
lofty perspective. These include some complaints, as the headline of his post is
"Matchmaking is the biggest impediment to the growth of Heroes of the Storm, &
other issues." Blizzard community manager Trikslyr
responded to the post, so Srey's high profile has drawn attention to issues
that have drawn a constant stream of complaints from players of the MOBA. Word
is they are planning some further changes to the matchmaking system. Here's a
bit: There are a couple of changes we’re implementing in a future patch
to make steps toward our ongoing goal of improving matchmaking in Heroes:
- A couple of bug fixes to help the matchmaker
identify players that are closer in skill, hopefully resulting in more even
matches
- Increasing the maximum wait time in queue to 10
minutes
- System improvements
Do note, these are not the only changes we’ll be implementing. We’ve got some
more alterations in development that will continue to be released, the moment
they’re ready, to help us further tune matchmaking. Some of the changes will be
focused on:
- Improving matches at high skill levels
- Improve the New User experience
- Adjustments to make sure players in matches are
close in experience, not just MMR
As for Srey, we’re looking into his account and identifying the matches that
could’ve been considered poor experiences. We’ll also be assessing our point
system to make sure a player at Srey's skill level won’t fall out of Rank 1 due
to a couple of losses. In addition to this data from top tier matches, we’re
hoping to extract information or identify bugs in the matchmaker that we could
alter to make everyone’s match quality better, regardless of experience or
MMR.
Paradox Interactive reveals plans for a new expansion called The Cossacks coming
later this year for Europa Universalis IV, their grand strategy sequel. They offer
a new cinematic trailer
to illustrate the news, and make the following promises about the release: For centuries, the European steppes were dominated by a unique warrior
culture. The Cossacks were fiercely independent soldiers, and some of the elite
cavalry of Poland and Russia through early-modern history.
The Cossacks, the newest expansion to Paradox Development Studios’
best-selling historical grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV, pays homage
to this legendarily proud people with a ton of new features that enhance the
diplomatic game and give you new things to tend to during peacetime. The
Cossacks will come to digital retailers and the Paradox store in late 2015.

Bohemia Interactive announces Arma 3 has sold over two million copies,
also taking the occasion to unveil plans for future updates to their military
shooter sequel. They say they have two releases coming for free between now and
the release of a full expansion in Q2 of next year.
This post
offers the roadmap, and here's a bit from a separate press release on expansion
plans: The Nexus and Eden platform updates lead up to the roadmap's focal
point: a major Arma 3 expansion in Q2 2016. Titled 'Arma 3 Apex', this expansion
will feature the 100 km2 South Pacific destination of Tanoa, which was first
shown during the PC Gaming Show at E3 this year, plus a co-op campaign, new
vehicles, weapons, and characters. One of the central themes of the expansion is
near-future combat, which players will be able to recognize by the introduction
of new vehicle classes such as VTOL aircraft and other new gameplay elements. As
with previous Arma 3 DLC, the expansion will be accompanied by a major free
platform update that seeks to address important 'legacy' issues related to Arma
3's multiplayer, interaction mechanics, and discoverability of official and
custom content. More information about the Arma 3 Apex expansion, including
specifics on pricing, purchasing options, and early access availability, will be
communicated next year.

Well, I seem to be surviving my colonoscopy prep as well as I could hope. I have definitely worn a
path to the bathroom, as was to be expected, but I seem to be fine otherwise.
Apparently the remaining wild card is how I come out of the anesthesia, as I'm
told it's possible I'll come away from this as "high as a kite," and may temporarily
be more loopy than normal. This means that while I expect to be back and
updating later, it's possible I'll just sleep through the rest of the day, while
I can't rule out the possibility that I will write some sort of drug-fuelled
manifesto that will have the men in black knocking at my door for a discussion
about my future confinement. So in place of certainly, all I can offer is
potential wackiness. Let the games begin! Speaking of which, NFL pool
participants should get their picks in before tonight's game.
