Archived News:
Psyop Games announces Moving Hazard, the working title of an upcoming
competitive, team-based first-person shooter set during the inevitable zombie
apocalypse. This is being co-developed by IllFonic, who most recently
contributed to the
Star Citizen FPS module. A Moving
Hazard website is online, offering information and a bunch of concept art
for the game, which they hope to release next year. Here's a little on what will
set this apart from so many other zombie shooters: In Moving Hazard,
zombies are not simply an enemy to be sought out and exterminated; they are a
dynamic part of the battleground which you must navigate, manipulate, and
ultimately weaponize in order to defeat your human foes. In addition to having a
selection of military-grade assault weapons at their disposal, players will also
need to take advantage of technology specifically evolved to allow them to
control the zombies that they encounter by attracting, repelling, sedating,
angering, or booby-trapping them, as well as a wide variety of additional
tactics. You'll even be able to parachute a box of zombies down onto your
enemies.

A new trailer from
the "Minionstry of Information" shows off Overlord: Fellowship of Evil,
the action/RPG sequel coming to Windows and consoles next week. The accompanying
announcement includes quotes about the joy of evil the game presents: As
the video discusses, while looking suitably terrifying is important to
up-and-coming Netherghūls, being truly evil isn’t just about having the biggest
sword, or the pointiest shoulder pads. To be truly nefarious, one must consider
the killing, the pillaging and many other important aspects, including the “ever
popular evisceration and immolation of your colleagues”.
“The Netherghūls in Overlord: Fellowship of Evil are a real bunch of
ne’er-do-wells, as you’d expect from an Overlord game.” said Carl Johnson, Chief
Design Minion, Codemasters “They’re as likely to stab each other in the back as
they are to work together.”
“Evilis about more than just looks, it’s a way of life.” said Gnarl, Evil Minion
Master “There’s the carnage! And the looting! And the
running-away-very-fast-avoiding-horrific-death.” Continue here to read the full story.
Fatshark offers a new
dwarf ranger action reel with a short look at another of the heroes from
Warhammer: End Times Vermintide, their upcoming first-person shooter/melee
combat game. Here's the accompanying explanation: "The latest Action Reel is of
Bardin Goreksson, the Dwarf Ranger hailing from the Grey Mountains. Dwarves are
often considered a gregarious folk, prideful and not afraid to offend, and few
are more so than Bardin. He is not the vindictive type or cruel in nature, but
he has a habit of belittling his comrades through sheer ignorance and his robust
attitude. He will oftentimes be the loudest in the group, even if silence would
have been preferable. If negotiations go sour, the Dwarf Ranger is the first
with his axe out and swinging." Continue here to read the full story.

An
official statement from Ubisoft follows up on
the news
that the North American version of the Might & Magic Heroes VII Collector's
Edition does not contain a physical disc, something that has many customers
upset (thanks
Kotaku via nin). Though the European edition apparently did include physical disks,
they are offering refunds rather than providing discs to U.S. customers. They
are also giving out free games, and it sounds like these are for those who do
not opt for refunds, though the wording is a little vague. Here's the deal:
Please find underneath Ubisoft’s official statement concerning Might &
Magic Heroes VII - US Collector’s Edition.
“Ubisoft regrets any confusion created by the marketing materials from our Might
and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s Edition. We understand that some customers in
North America were not aware the Collector’s Edition delivered digital versions
of the game and soundtrack. Ubisoft apologizes for any frustration and
disappointment resulting from these items being in digital format vs. physical
format. We are accepting complete refunds from any dissatisfied customers and
will be providing a compensation plan of one complimentary digital PC game for
consumers that have already purchased the Might and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s
Edition from the Uplay shop in North America. Affected consumers will be able to
pick one game of their choice from a selection including Far Cry 4, Assassin’s
Creed Rogue, The Crew, Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition and Zombi.”
We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope the above statement will help to
clarify the current situation.
A
post on beta test details has been edited with word from Sledgehammer that
open beta testing of Star Wars Battlefront is being extended through
tomorrow, making it a day longer than first planned (thanks
Eurogamer). Here's word on additional paces they want to put the action game
through: These additional tests will start on Monday, October 12 and will
run thru Tuesday, October 13th, which will add an additional day to the open
Beta. These tests are to help us find some extreme scenarios, and that means
some players may experience occasional issues such as being kicked from the game
or losing connectivity. This is all being done in the name of shoring up our
infrastructure before we launch on November 17th.
SteamDB notes the inclusion of a file called
hl3.txt in the latest Dota 2 update (thanks
VG247). This contains snippets of code, while the name of the file naturally
inspires speculation that Valve is either hinting at something, or they've just
taken to trolling us about their shooter series. On a somewhat related note, a
thread from a couple of weeks ago on reddit recalls
Valve's 2006 announcement that
Half-Life 2: Episode One was gold (thanks Ant). Since this press release
called Ep1 "the first in a trilogy of episodes that will conclude by Christmas
of 2007," the thread takes that as the official announcement of Episode Three.
They note this makes the seemingly forgotten continuation of the shooter series
the new king of
Valve Time, as it has surpassed the 3,417 day gap between the announcement
and release of Team Fortress 2. Coincidentally, Episode Two was released
on October 10, 2007, so it's almost exactly eight years since the series
stalled.
Civilization: Beyond Earth - Rising Tide rises to debut at number two on
the
GFK Chart-Track chart of the top 30 PC games for the week ending October
10th. The Sims 4 retains the top spot on that chart. FIFA 16 continues to kick
ass on the
all platforms chart where Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection enters at
number two and Rock Band 4 pulls in at number 10. Here's
their summary: ‘FIFA
16’ (-59%) scores a hat-trick at No1 this week as its unbroken reign at the top
of the chart continues.
It’s now halfway to matching its predecessor’s six week unbroken run at the top
in 2014. New entry ‘Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection’ has to settle for
second place despite becoming the 8th biggest PS4 launch of the year so far. It
also misses out on joining the recent trend for re-mastered/re-released titles
to debut at No1 (such as Destiny: The Taken King, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
and Rare Replay).
‘Destiny: The Taken King’ (-35%) in fact manages to climb one place to No3,
ahead of ‘Lego Dimensions’ (-68%) which slips two places to No4 in its second
week of release. ‘Forza Motorsport 6’ (-41%) stalls, stuck at No5 for a second
week, while ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (-6%) speeds back up the chart from No9 to No6
– its highest position for 6 weeks.
‘Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer’ (-55%) and ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The
Phantom Pain’ (-41%) both drop one place to No’s 7 and 8 respectively. ‘NBA
2K16’ (-77%) remains in the Top 10, falling to No9, after launching strongly
last week at No3. Released on Tuesday, ‘Rock Band 4’ developed by Harmoix and
published by Mad Catz, brings the music controller style video game back to the
Top 10, debuting at No10. The only other new entry to make the Top 40 this week
is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Transformers Devastation’ at No21.

Today is Columbus Day here in the U.S., a celebration of this historical figure
who can be generously described as controversial.
Indigenous
Peoples' Day seems to have more merit, and in some areas where they
commemorate that they have done away with the Columbus part altogether. With all
that, this is not the most widely celebrated holiday, so I'm not sure this will
have any real impact on the pace of news today.
