Not sure what happened, but the thermostat did not repeat its odd behavior when I turned it back on again, as it shut off normally when it hit the set temperature. I'm happy that it's working, but I remain concerned, since besides costing money and causing discomfort, a malfunctioning thermostat can be a safety issue, so I think I should look at replacing it anyway.
