Stardock has released Sorcerer King, a new fantasy-themed 4X strategy
game. "With Sorcerer King we wanted to do a different take on fantasy strategy
and move away from some of the genre’s familiar tropes," says Stardock CEO Brad
Wardell in the announcement.
"Instead of pitting players against other factions with the same objective of
conquering the game’s world for themselves, we’re challenging players to
struggle against the Doomsday counter as they rise from the ashes of defeat to
stop the demigod from casting a spell that will transform him into a god." The
Sorcerer King website also
has details on the first patch for the release version, which brings it up to
version 1.0. Here's more on the game: Players can challenge Sorcerer King
and its ever ticking Doomsday Counter with the game’s six unique sovereigns that
have their own skill trees, spellbooks and units. In Sorcerer King the landscape
is filled with hundreds of quests. Completing them grants you crafting
components, lore for researching new spells, new units, magical artifacts, and
can even increase or decrease the Doomsday Counter. Along the way players will
also encounter rivals that they may either choose to make into allies who
support their cause or make them enemies that must be dealt with in addition
stopping the Sorcerer King.
Vogelsap announces a Q3 2015 release window for
The Flock, their upcoming
asymmetrical multiplayer horror game. In an unusual twist, they also announce
that the game's titular Flock has a defined population, which will dictate how
long the game will be sold and when it will cease being playable. "A multiplayer
game can take players to incredible heights, but at some point gamers will start
to play less, get disinterested and stop playing altogether," said Jeroen Van
Hasselt, creative director, Vogelsap. "In opposition to other multiplayer games,
we want The Flock’s experience to inspire a sense of awe, to keep players
eagerly anticipating what is coming next and to end with a memorable climax."
Here's more on how this will work: Vogelsap delivers their first-person
asymmetrical multiplayer horror game The Flock to Steam in Q3 2015, in a way
that has never been done before. Time left for people to buy the game depends on
the death rate of players within The Flock. Developer Vogelsap commits to a
hands-off approach and puts the lastingness of the game into the players’ hands.
With each death in the game, one life will be taken from the Flock’s population.
When the Flock’s population reaches zero, the game will never be purchasable
again. Only players who have The Flock in their Steam library will then be able
to partake in the yet to be announced climactic finale. After the ending, the
game will go offline permanently and no longer be playable.
The Flock population countdown will be embedded in the game’s menus, Steam store
page, Vogelsap’s website and The Flock’s sub-reddit to make sure all gamers are
aware of the amount of lives left.
Allods Team, Obsidian Entertainment, and My.com announce the beginning of
open beta testing of Skyforge is now underway, offering a soft launch of this
free-to-play, sci-fi MMORPG. The
open beta trailer
to celebrate the news
was actually released a couple of
weeks ago. Here's word on the beta and what will follow: In Skyforge,
players will adventure across Aelion, a colorful world blended between fantasy
and science fiction. Equipped as any of the 13 classes which can be changed at
any time, players will face off against an array of dangerous creatures and
other immortals using the game’s unique dynamic combat system. Following the

Slitherine announces the
release of Legions of Steel, offering a 10% launch discount for this
science-fiction, turn-based tactics game. You can take a look at the game in a
Firing
Techniques trailer from the other day, the brand-new
launch
trailer, as well as a video on their
Twitch channel of a
livestream they recorded for posterity. Here's word: The first thing you
see is the sky covered by falling stars. Next you observe explosions scarring
the ground and destroying your cities. When it's too late, you realize what is
truly happening. Your planet doesn't belong to you anymore. It belongs to the
Machines!
Legions of Steel is releasing today! The game depicts a dark future where the
majority of the races inhabiting the Milky Way are driven to unite against the
deadliest menace of all: endless hordes of sentient machines devoted to the
annihilation of all other species. These latter formed an Alliance trying to
cripple the enemy by knocking out their underground facilities. This kind of
mission is not suitable for large groups of units and the Alliance is forced to
rely on smaller - but better trained and equipped - squads named Commandos!
Legions of Steel is a tactical board game where battles are fought in a dark and
dangerous environment. French developer Studio Nyx have managed to re-create the
deep and challenging set of rules, giving players plenty of shooting and
movement options.
Two challenging campaigns are designed to make you feel the sensation of
fighting in a hostile and narrow complex of underground facilities, where the
wrong order to only one of your men could bring the destruction of you entire
squad thanks to a very pro active AI.
And if you are eager to engage other humans don't miss the chance to try our
flexible and dynamic Tournament System which uses a non-elimination format. The
best for a more challenging experience! Continue here to read the full story.

Telltale Games announces July 21st is when to expect A Nest of Vipers, the
fifth of six chapters in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series. They offer
this new video to show
off the episode, and provide some details on what it will involve: In
this penultimate episode of the season, the actions of every Forrester are vital
to the survival of the house. Rodrik's alliance with House Glenmore, and his
defiance of the Whitehills, has drawn the ire of an even greater threat: Ramsay
Snow. Far across the Narrow Sea in Essos, with Meereen now a free city, Asher is
close to securing the army he desperately needs to return home, and save his
family. In King's Landing, Mira's activities at Tommen's coronation have not
escaped the attention of Margaery Tyrell, and Cersei has realized that the
handmaiden may prove useful in her political games. Finally, beyond the Wall,
Gared's unlikely allies are reluctant to help in the search for the North
Grove... but this far into the frozen wilds, Crows and Free Folk have a common
enemy; and winter is coming.

We haven't heard much about Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade since the
MMORPG was announced two years
ago, but now developer Behaviour Interactive announces they have switched to
the Unreal Engine 4, saying this is helping them develop the game "significantly
faster," even though this is their first experiencing using Epic's
technology. They
actually
revealed this a couple of weeks ago as part of a
livestream. Here's word: Independent game developer Behaviour Interactive
announced that its upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game,
Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade, is now being developed with Epic Games’
Unreal Engine 4. The science fiction third-person shooter is the studio’s first
title developed on Unreal Engine 4 and features a rich online game experience
made by fans for the fans.
“After evaluating our engine options we decided that Unreal Engine 4 and the
team at Epic offered the type of support and the best toolset to make the
Warhammer world come to life,” said Rémi Racine, Founder and CEO of Behaviour
Interactive. “The sheer amount of productivity tools we get right out of the box
have helped the game’s development progress significantly faster, allowing the
team to ensure the highest quality at a rate we couldn’t have achieved before.”
Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is set in the globally recognized Games
Workshop Warhammer 40,000 universe. Players select one of four factions of the
41st millennium and fight other players for control of a persistent world at
war. The action-based shooter features massive battles in which players fight to
control sectors of the game and earn the right to customize and craft their
characters in a deep progression system drawn from Warhammer 40,000 lore.
“We love being a partner in this project and couldn’t be more thrilled to
provide the tools that are helping ship a highly-anticipated MMO like Warhammer
40,000 Eternal Crusade,” said Joe Kreiner, Head of Licensing, Americas at Epic
Games. “The team at Behaviour Interactive is a welcome addition to the Unreal
family with their vast experience in the gaming industry and successful
portfolio of titles.” Continue here to read the full story.
The PC edition of Batman: Arkham Knight that is
so broken that
it is no longer being
sold may not be ready for release until autumn, reports
Kotaku Australia, who call the game's release window spring since they are
in the southern hemisphere (thanks
VG247). This is unconfirmed, as they have what's purported to be an internal
email from EB Games recalling all stock on the game based on how long it will be
before it can be sold once more. Here's word: “As previously advised,”
read an internal EB Games email, “we have stopped sales of Batman: Arkham Knight
PC while Warner and Rocksteady work on addressing performance issues with the
game. The latest information from Warner is that the updates won’t be available
until Spring. Due to this we have made the difficult decision to recall all PC
stock from stores to return to the vendor until an acceptable solution is
released.”
The Deadpool game is back on Steam, over six
months after it was
pulled from sale (thanks
PC Gamer).
The game's removal seemed to be related to licensing and it was suggested it
would not return, and there is no explanation of what has changed. Here's the
feature list as a refresher on the game:
- I made sure to capture all my good sides, so I
made my game a third-person action-shooter. (Yep, you get to look at my
heinie.)
- Keep a look out cuz some of my X-Men pals (Whoa,
what pals?!) are making an appearance. (Hope you don't mind picking hair out
of your tacos.)
- I'm really good at killing, so I made it a blast
stringing together combos, and totally eviscerating my enemies.
(Ev-is-cer-a-ting!)
- I brought my skills and a buttload of my favorite
things. Katanas (check), guns (bang!) explosives (boom), duct tape (quack)
and of course, yours truly - ME! (Checkmate!)
The
World of Warcraft website announces Blizzard is working on a new PvP
Mercenary Mode that will allow players to participate in Ashran or unrated
Battlegrounds without having to wait through long queues. Word is this will
switch you to the appropriate faction on the fly: They say, “Keep your
friends close, and your enemies closer”—and soon, you’ll be able to do just
that.
In an upcoming patch, we’ll be adding a feature that allows you to act as a
mercenary for the opposite faction in PvP. Whenever your faction is experiencing
a long wait time to get into Ashran or unrated Battlegrounds, agents of the
enemy faction will appear in your base in Ashran (Stormshield for the Alliance,
Warspear for the Horde). These agents will allow you to enter Ashran or
Battlegrounds disguised as an enemy player, and actually fight as the opposite
faction.
When you compete as a mercenary, you’ll still earn all the same rewards you
would have by winning or losing as your own faction (with the exception of
faction-specific achievements). You’ll also have your race automatically changed
into one appropriate for the opposite faction while you’re still inside the
Battleground or Ashran. Perhaps most importantly, however, you’ll experience
much shorter queue times, as our matchmaking system will be able to fill up
groups much quicker!
Our goal with Mercenary Mode is to allow players who want to participate in
Ashran or unrated Battlegrounds the ability to do so without having to wait
through long queues, while still maintaining the spirit of the core Alliance vs
Horde fantasy. We’ll be testing this feature soon on the Public Test Realm, and
look forward to hearing your feedback!

Valve is now accepting
applications for a Steam Controller Developer Edition, offering this to
selected developers working on projects that will support the upcoming game
controller. The form requires details on the project and developer, and there's
no indication of the likelihood of being approved though this process. Thanks

Okay, that Amazon Prime sale was beyond weird, as after turning up the hype to
11, it ended up disappointing everyone from
geeks to regular
civilians. I have no idea how they convinced themselves this would be bigger
than Black Friday.
Buzzfeed collects some of the funniest responses to the debacle, including
one from the Stern show's J.D. Harmeyer.
