Archived News:
Mojang announces a "whole new version of Minecraft they are calling
Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta (though they'll probably drop the beta
part at some point), an update for the sandbox mining and construction game.
They currently plan on releasing this on July 29th, and they reassure the
20-some million owners of the Java-based PC edition that they are entitled to a
free copy of the new version, while everyone else can purchase it for USD $10.00
while it is in beta. Here's word: We have exciting news to share! A whole
new version of Minecraft is on its way. This time, it’s for Windows 10 –
Microsoft’s new swanky operating system that’s due for release on July 29th.
We’re calling it Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta.
Just like the first release of Minecraft all those years ago, this version will
develop and evolve over time with the help of your feedback. That’s why it has
“Beta” in the title – because it’s not quite finished, and will become even more
fun over time. Just like the other versions of Minecraft, all future updates
will be free. We spoil you. We really do.
If you’re one of the 20 million(!) players who have the PC edition of Minecraft
(referred to by techy people as the Java version) you’ll be able to download
Windows 10 Edition Beta from the Windows 10 store for free. Other players can
get it for the paltry price of $10 during the beta period (the length of which
is still being decided).
Minecraft is available on Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Xbox 360,
Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, and now, Windows 10. Not every version of
Minecraft is exactly the same, but they all feature two distinct game modes –
Creative and Survival – that cater to different types of players. All versions
of Minecraft support multiplayer.
You’ll recognise some Pocket Edition features in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition
Beta, along with potpourri of cool extras. Here are some highlights:
- Craft, create, and explore online with up to seven
friends playing Windows 10 Edition Beta, through local multiplayer or with
your Xbox Live friends online.
- Play online and local multiplayer with other
Pocket Edition players thanks to a free update, due to arrive soon after
launch.
- Multiple control schemes! Switch between
controller, touch, and keyboard controls with little to no effort!
- Record and share gameplay highlights with built-in
GameDVR.
- Help shape the future of Minecraft: Windows 10
Edition Beta with our built player feedback mechanisms!
- Chickens, zombies, pigs, boats, armed skeletons,
potatoes, zombies, baby squids, enchantment tables, villagers, naked sheep,
iron golems, potions, ghasts, pickaxes, carrots, and all the weird and
wonderful goodness you’ve come to expect from Minecraft.
We hope you’re as excited as us for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. It’s
gonna be cool!
Here's a new trailer
from Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Games Series, the upcoming
episodic adventure spin-off of the Minecraft series (thanks
GameInformer). Here's word on the clip, which discusses the game, including
the participation of Patton Oswalt: Minecraft: Story Mode is an adventure
game, by Telltale Games, set in a Minecraft world. It is a five-part episodic
series that will take you to the Nether, the Farlands, the End, and beyond! You
will drive how the story flows through the decisions you make: what you say to
people (and how you say it), and what you choose to do in moments of thrilling
action.
Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by
actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order
of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very
best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While
at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something
dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The
Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.
Available to download soon for PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360,
Xbox One, compatible iOS devices, and Android.
A new patch is now live on
Steam for Fractured
Space, the Early Access team-based space combat game.
This post the detail on all the new content this adds, and
this one has details on a subsequent hotfix.
This trailer offers a
look at the current state of the game, and here's word on the two new ships that
are the centerpieces of the new update: T.D.S. LEVIATHAN
TDS Heavy - large powerful, ship with multiple weapon systems and the ability to
create Jump Points. Both main weapons - Tempest Cannon and Fusion Beam - require
warm-up before firing. The Tempest can be aimed quickly to react to close range
targets (inside 15km) - the Fusion Beam fires forward only but can deliver a
devastating attack to targets up 20km away. The Jump Point systems can create
temporary Jump Locations lasting 30 seconds allow the Leviathan to bring in
allies to anywhere on the map. However the creation of the jump point takes time
(10s) and is hazardous (the Leviathan is very vulnerable during this period).
U.S.R. RANGER
The Ranger is fast ship with a decent range on its main weapon (Longbow cannon
20km) - this has a hold and charge system allowing you to hold and release at
different rates to sacrifice damage for rate of fire (inside a small window. The
Ranger has the ability to heal itself using Shutdown and Repair at the cost of
shutting down almost all its systems and rendering itself vulnerable, it must
therefore find a place to hide before activating this ability.
The Ranger can place homing stealth mines that will home in on approaching ships
(these are however still work in progress). These can be detected by the usual
stealth detection mechanics in-game, and can also be destroyed from a distance
and by point defense.

"Previously, in Oct 2012, Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame, having
left the industry back in the 90s for Hollywood, announced Star Citizen via
Kickstarter. He was looking to raise $500K, but ended up with $2.1m on
Kickstarter. More on this later. The original pitch was for a game that
blended Wing Commander with Privateer, and dose of Freelancer, three of his
previous games. And we were all on-board with that; me to the tune of $250
in funding. The delivery schedule was Nov 2014. We’re still waiting.
As of this writing, the game’s crowd-funding has not only ballooned to an
unprecedented $85m, but so has the scope. The entire bulk of the
crowd-funding, after sailing past that initial $2.1m Kickstarter funding,
was in selling futures. No seriously, hear me out. Someone figured out that
the hype around this game was so huge, that they may as well start selling
ice to Eskimos. And they did just that.
Not that I’m saying there’s anything wrong with that; after all, that’s what
raising funds for a project is about: selling. But it’s a double-edged
sword. And usually, if you’re dealing with seasoned and experienced
investors, or even publishers, if they’re not convinced or even interested,
you’re not getting the money. And if you do get it, that money comes with
strings - usually pretty long and taut strings. With crowd-funding, no such
strings exist, and you can pretty much do what you want. And that’s usually
where trouble starts.
So, they are making concept art for ships, some were actual models, and then
selling them at a premium. People keep buying them. This, despite the fact
that there is still no “game” to play them with. In short, the result is
that you have ships you’ve bought, with no game to play them with."

Happy Independence Day! Whether or not you are in the U.S., here's hoping you're
enjoying a little independence today. I barbequed some ribs yesterday and
grilled up some burgers, but don't have anything set for today, which turns out
to be good planning, as rain is possible in the local forecast. Here's hoping
you're having a safe and fun weekend whether celebrating the occasion or not.
