Mirror's Edge Catalyst Title Confirmed

The Mirror's Edge website now officially announces the just discovered trademark for Mirror's Edge Catalyst reveals the title of the next installment in the parkour action series. Here's word on why this is not a sequel:

Two years ago we revealed that we were making a new Mirror’s Edge™. Last year, we gave you a behind the scenes look into some of the early progress we had made. And though we haven't said much else in all that time, we have been listening. Thank you for your incredible passion and your patience. I'm excited to tell you that it's paid off — by this time next week, you will have finally seen more of the game at E3.

Mirror’s Edge has always had a special place in the hearts of all of us at DICE. The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of the gameplay and style — it had a unique soul. But as much as we loved that game, we knew it could be more. So that’s what we have set out to do as we introduce Mirror’s Edge to a new generation.

The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror's Edge 2. We have landed on a vision that honors the first game — pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith — but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players.

So on behalf on the entire team here at DICE, we can’t wait to show you what we have been pouring our heart and soul into. We can’t wait to introduce you to Mirror’s Edge™ Catalyst.

Chris Avellone Leaves Obsidian

Chris Avellone tweets his departure from Obsidian, saying "I have officially left Obsidian Entertainment to accept a sudden opening as the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts." The acclaimed RPG designer follows by confirming that while he is indeed leaving the developer he helped found in 2003, he has not actually become a wizardry instructor. Eurogamer reached out to him asking about his plans, and he told them: "On the future, I'm off to pursue new projects, but I can't say anything more at this time beyond life is short, and the ideas keep growing." Thanks nin.

Master of Orion Remake Plans

Wargaming announces they are resurrecting Master of Orion, saying they are working on an updated version of the MicroProse strategy classic for a modern audience. This is in the works in Argentine-based NGD Studios, and word is they have enlisted "key members from the original title's team" to ensure authenticity. An announcement trailer celebrates the news, but neither the trailer nor the announcement clarify whether or not this will be a departure from the current Wargaming formula, which centers around free-to-play MMOGs, though they make multiple references to staying true to the original. Like their World of X games, this project has local websites for North America, Europe, and Asia, each of which flashes a countdown timer that doesn't seem to actually be counting anything. Here's what they have to say about the project for now:

Wargaming today announced Master of Orion, a modern rebirth of the critically acclaimed sci-fi strategy game. The forerunner of the influential “4X” style of gameplay, Master of Orion captured the imagination of gamers around the world. Its deep, strategic gameplay offered numerous ways to win—through brute force, diplomacy or resource domination.

Master of Orion brings Wargaming back to its science fiction origins, which began with the company’s acclaimed Massive Assault game series. Developed by Argentine-based NGD Studios and with key members from the original title’s team, Master of Orion stays true to its renowned 4X gameplay.

Enhanced visuals, built from the ground up, breathe new life into the vast galaxy available to explore and conquer, as well as give new personality to the many races which call it home. Players can expect a revamped user interface, an orchestral score from the original game’s composer, voiceovers by well-known actors, new user tutorials, and more to deliver a classic yet fresh experience to one of gaming’s most respected franchises.

“Master of Orion is a game that brings Wargaming truly back to its roots, not only as a company but also in how it influenced my personal interest in both games and making them,” said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming. “The series’ iconic gameplay has stood the test of time and working with NGD Studios to bring the series back to life is a truly exciting moment for the team.”

“As longtime fans of the Master of Orion, the opportunity to help breathe new life into this acclaimed game has been a dream come true,” said Andrés Chilkowski, Co-founder and CEO of NGD Studios. “While we’ve made many improvements overall to the game, we’re confident that its classic and addictive gameplay will appeal to gamers no matter if they played the game years ago or are now just experiencing it for the very first time.”

Sword Coast Legends in September; Console Editions Announced

Digital Extremes and n-Space announce plans for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of Sword Coast Legends by the end of this year, also specifying a September 8th release date for the previously announced Windows, OS X, and Linux editions of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. Cross-platform play on the three PC versions was recently announced, but there's no word on whether console and PC gamers will be able to play this together. Here's word:

"We've had a clear goal since day one to evoke the classic D&D experience between four players and a Dungeon Master, and to bring back memories of the great D&D games of the past," said Dan Tudge, President of n-Space and Director for Sword Coast Legends. "After we announced and demonstrated Sword Coast Legends to overwhelmingly positive response at GDC, the press, partners, and fans all requested more. They wanted Mac, so we're doing it. They wanted Linux, so we're doing it. They clamored for console... so we circled back and figured out how to do it without compromising our vision for PC gamers. This addition to our existing PC, Mac and Linux versions ensures gamers will be able to have that classic D&D experience whenever, wherever and however they want."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Sells 4M

An open letter on the Witcher website from CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwiński reveals that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold more than four million copies in the first two weeks of the release of the RPG sequel. On a semi-related note, this video helps explain Gwent, the collectible card game contained within The Witcher 3. Here's word on the sales milestone:

May 19th was a crucial date for all of us here at CD PROJEKT RED -- we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, our open world role-playing game that we had been hard at work on for over 3 years. Since day one, you have given us tons of positive feedback and support -- the sheer volume of emails we’ve gotten since launch simply congratulating us for our efforts is both epic and heartwarming, and I wish every developer comes to have such a fantastic community. In terms of media reception, we’re really humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world. With an average of 90+ on every platform, Wild Hunt is our dream coming true.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the four million gamers worldwide who bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the first two weeks from launch. Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we’ll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you’re telling us Wild Hunt already is! Until then, keep on enjoying Wild Hunt, do not forget to grab your weekly set of free DLCs, and stay tuned for constant updates and enhancement to the game we are continuously working on.

Out of the Blue

The Mets and Yankees are each in sole possession of first place in their respective divisions, the latest in the season both local baseball teams could make that claim since the conclusion of the 2006 season. If I thought this was a sustainable situation I would wait until the end of the season to comment on it, but given the recent history of the Mets (and me making fun of them along the way), I figure they deserve some congratulations for a successful third of a season.
