Archived News:
Bad Juju, parent company of both Desura and
Indie Royale, has filed for bankruptcy
protection, reports
Gamasutra, with the news coming just a couple of weeks after
reports of missed royalty
payments to developers. The situation is a bit cloudy at the moment, as they
state that Bad Juju's head of developer relations says she learned of the news
through Twitter, and that the company's CEO told her he was instructed by
lawyers not to answer any questions right now. They also note that the developer
of Project Zomboid is recommending that players who haven’t activated
Steam keys purchased via Desura do so "as soon as possible."
The Elite: Dangerous website
notes that Frontier Developments' space-based MMOG is in the process of
upgrading, as today is the launch of the game's free Powerplay expansion. This
updates the game to version 1.3, and the complete patch notes are in
this forum post,
though it may take a couple of days to read through them all. Here's a
launch trailer, and
here's a summary of what this adds: Powerplay is the third major free
update for Elite: Dangerous and the largest to date, introducing new ships, new
features and an all-new strategic layer to the Elite: Dangerous galaxy.
In Powerplay, players can pledge allegiance to one of a number of galactic
Powers and join the battle for interstellar conquest and control. Players can
guide their chosen faction’s strategy, take on special objectives to advance
their shared cause, and dominate Elite: Dangerous’ full-scale Milky Way galaxy
together.
Players are rewarded with valuable perks, reputation bonuses and unique
equipment for their allegiance as they defend their territory and conquer human
space. Every action taken in Powerplay will have a direct and visible impact on
the balance of galactic power for all players.
Powerplay’s new strategic layer connects with and enhances every aspect of the
Elite: Dangerous experience, and headlines an immense free update containing
hundreds of upgrades and new features, including:
- An enhanced mission system with new objectives and
new ways to play.
- Three new ships: the Lakon Diamondback Scout,
Lakon Diamondback Explorer and the Imperial Courier.
- Drones for cargo collection, fuel trading and
prospecting.
- A new illustrated GalNet newsfeed, accessible
directly in players’ ship UI.
- High and low intensity mining sites, adding risk
to mining and increasing potential rewards.
- New minable commodities.
- An updated bounty system.
- Upgraded UI and animated emblems for ranking up.
- Numerous other improvements to gameplay and
performance.
The new Powerplay trailer is available here. Elite: Dangerous is available
now for PC and Mac, and is coming to Xbox One, the all-in-one games and
entertainment system from Microsoft, in 2015. Continue here to read the full story.

Publisher BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe and developer Slightly Mad Studios
announce Project CARS has now sold more than one million units:
BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe and Slightly Mad Studios are proud to
announce that Project CARS has already sold more than one million units around
the world! With this huge success and the accolade of being the highest-rated
racing game on PS4, Project CARS has firmly positioned itself as one of the
greatest driving experiences ever made - created by the fans, for the fans!
When asked about this success, Ian Bell (Studio Head of Slightly Mad Studios)
says: “Throughout the development of Project CARS the community were
instrumental in guiding the game - giving us feedback daily on each build
iteration, telling us what needed improving, highlighting what they’d like to
see included, and ultimately approving it as the racing game of their dreams.
Even with this amount of early indication that the bold, ambitious vision we had
was on track to be something that would truly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with
the existing leading titles in the genre, it wasn’t until the first review
scores came in that we truly realised how much Project CARS had resonated with
both media, racing professionals, and gamers alike around the world. To now
stand here having reached over a million players in such a short time really
justifies the work both the team and the community have done over the years and
solidifies Project CARS’ future as the multi-platform racing experience of
choice for fans around the world. And we’ll be talking more about that future
very, very soon"

The Skyforge
website introduces the Kinetic, one of the classes in Obsidian's upcoming
MMORPG, offering a
gameplay trailer showing the character in action. Here's the accompanying
explanation: "The Kinetic class controls the laws of physics to do amazing feats
on the battlefield. Kinetics are capable using gravity to destroy their foes and
have powers that enable them to rip colossal stones from the ground and hurtle
them at enemies. Kinetics can use physics to protect themselves, using the very
magnetic fields of Aelion to restrict enemy movement or to encase themselves and
allies in protective gravitational barriers." Continue here to read the full story.

DayZ is suffering from a dwindling playerbase
according to Steam Charts, where
they note the zombie game's average and peak player counts are half what they
were as recently as April, and are around a third of what they were about a year
ago. The game's player peak was 45,398 when it entered Early Access in
December 2013, and it's highest average player count came the month after
that at just over 23K users. In the last 30 days the game has hit 12,336 peak
players and 6,173.1 average players. Thanks

I'm not sure why it would come up, but if I'm ever out and about and for some
reason need to know the height of my coffee table, I'll be able to easily tell from
the nasty bruise on my shin that perfectly corresponds with the table's edge. I
don't know if it's possible to hit yourself hard enough to actually break your
leg that way, but I sure tried my best to either break my leg or the coffee
table. Owie.
