Archived News:
Oculus website has system specifications for "the full Rift experience" when
they release their Oculus Rift VR headsets next year, saying: "All of the games
and applications for the Rift created by Oculus will provide an incredible
experience on this system." They also now offer a
new
version 0.6 of the PC SDK, and here are
the release notes for that.
Here are the recommended specifications: The Rift’s Recommended Spec
Presence is the first level of magic for great VR experiences: the unmistakable
feeling that you’ve been teleported somewhere new. Comfortable, sustained
presence requires a combination of the proper VR hardware, the right content,
and an appropriate system.
For the full Rift experience, we recommend the following system:
- NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
- Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
- 8GB+ RAM
- Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
- 2x USB 3.0 ports
- Windows 7 SP1 or newer
The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience
on this configuration. Ultimately, we believe this will be fundamental to VR’s
success, as developers can optimize and tune their game for a known
specification, consistently achieving presence and simplifying development.
All of the games and applications for the Rift created by Oculus will provide an
incredible experience on this system.
Binstock, Oculus chief architect, wrote a detailed technical post outlining the
recommended system specification and the reasoning behind it, along with more
Rift details, here:

Turns out the
the beef
we had with the Diablo III anniversary buff being only on consoles
was premature, as
Blizzard
announces the PC celebration is now underway. And while the cow level may be
a lie this time around in the action/RPG series, the anniversary will allow you
to "encounter a bovine of some nature along the way."
This post from yesterday
now makes more sense: There are no homicidal heifers. There is no
invasion. And, more specifically, there is no cow level. Anyone who claims
otherwise is full of bull and simply milking this terrible prank for all that
it's worth.
That said, while the idea of some sort of "cowpocalypse" (as one terrified
farmer has taken to calling this) is udderly ridiculous, it is worth noting that
one can never be too careful. And so, after consulting with our local Horadrim
chapter, we have elected to issue an advisory.
Effective immediately, we encourage all residents of Sanctuary to steer clear of
the wilds. From dawn on May 15 to dusk on May 21, it is also recommended that
you avoid entering any strange portals that may or may not lead to alternate
planes of existence. This activity cud be potentially hazardous to your health
and, in the opinion of this humble civil servant, is a veally bad idea in
general.
In the meantime, we urge you all to stay calm and remember that cows don't kill
people. Everything ELSE in Sanctuary kills people.

on combat mechanics in the upcoming sci-fi strategy game. Word is: "Adam and

A
Blizzard post to the Diablo III forums indicate they are looking at
re-working the game's Infernal Machine events, originally intended as end-game
content for the action/RPG sequel, as they are a lot of work for little payoff at
this point. Word is: "Right now there is a disparity between the footwork
required to participate in the event and the reward for completing it, so we’re
currently looking at our options to better align the two. We’re currently aiming
to have a solution in place for the next major content patch, but of course as a
work in progress that’s subject to change." That major content patch is to come
between seasons three and four,
and
this post reiterates they expect the season to last at least three months,
and they will give two weeks notice before it concludes (more details are in
this
recent post). Finally, they
announce Diablo
III Anniversary Event Buffs from today through May 21st to celebrate the
third anniversary of the game. Oddly, these buffs are only for the console
editions. Even more oddly none of them are three yet, as the third anniversary
of the previous-gen versions will be September 2016, and the third anniversary
of the current-gen versions will be August 2017. Meanwhile, the PC edition,
which seems to be ignored by the celebration, was released exactly three years
ago today.
Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Roll7 now offer the release of Not a
Hero, a cover-based shooter boasting 2¼-D visuals. These are on display in the
game's frenetic launch trailer
and the game itself is offered through
GOG.com,
Humble Store,
and Steam.
Here's word: Not A Hero follows professional assassin-turned-amateur
campaign manager, Steve, who is charged with cleaning up the city by a
time-traveling rabbit / mayoral candidate named BunnyLord. Now Steve and his
expanding roster of dubious heroes must wield their unique skills to shoot,
slide, dive and take cover behind a political platform built on ethics,
accountability, and an inordinate amount of gunfire. Eliminate the criminal
underworld of the city’s three major districts and persuade undecided voters to
your cause, tackling the issues that matter by putting a gun in the mouth of
those issues.
Not A Hero is powered by ISO-Slant™, a new proprietary technology that allows
game developers to reach the sweet spot between 2D and 2½D perspectives with
minimal effort. Through the liberal, almost irresponsible use of ISO-Slant™, Not
A Hero developer Roll7 is able to radically alter the standard 2D pixel art
action game into an unbelievable 2¼D visual tour de force and creates a unique
new genre sure to entertain for years to come. Continue here to read the full story.

Kotaku Australia - The Subtle Demon: The Games Industry's Problem With
Ageism.
“45 is a scary age to be looking for work in any industry, I just think
it might be a little worse in this one,” says Heidi. “The phrase ‘you don’t
fit into the culture’ seems like such a cop-out to me. “These youngsters
don’t have a monopoly on good ideas, on innovation, on passion, on energy.
We’re just as bad-ass. We totally are.”
