Assassin's Creed: Syndicate?

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate is apparently the title of the next installment in the Assassin's Creed series, reports Polygon after getting to see marketing material for the stealth/action sequel. They seem pretty convinced, but this is still unconfirmed pending next week's reveal.

Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys For All Players Coming

The Frontier forums have word that all Elite: Dangerous players will soon be able to claim Steam keys for the space combat MMORPG (thanks IncGamers). Here's how this will work:

We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future.

We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous, but we know a number of long-time players and backers like to play through Steam and we think it’s fair everyone has that option, not just new players.

Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy. It’s coming soon. From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time.

The team really has been working hard on this one, and we’re all super happy to finally have an answer for you. Thanks for bearing with us and thanks for playing, as always.

Edit: This applies to Kickstarter backers, too.

Pillars of Eternity Patch

A Kickstarter update for Pillars of Eternity has details on a new version 1.05 patch for the RPG, which Obsidian Entertainment calls "a big one" (thanks nin). Word is: "Patch 1.05 features hundreds of bug fixes, balance changes, and new UI features. There are many minor fixes that are not listed in these notes." Here are the new features they list:

  • You can now rename save games.
  • You can now change the portrait and sound set of characters from the character sheet. Click on the gear icon to open the customization window. You can only use this feature on player characters and hired (non-companion) characters.
  • New Stash sorting. You can now sort stash by item type, enchant score, and sell value.
  • Added a Latest News feature on the main menu to keep you informed on patches and Kickstarter updates.
  • Added a new color for unique items in the inventory.
Added a new hotkey for switching weapon sets on selected characters.
You can now bind extra mouse buttons to Ability hotkeys.
  • There's a new option to reset newly recruited companions to level 1 (without losing the experience). This will allow you to level up companions to your liking.

CryENGINE Linux Support Plans

The CryENGINE website has details on some changes to their EULA which include the revelation of plans for Linux support in Crytek's game engine (thanks GamingOnLinux via Ant). Here's the deal:

Let's talk about the pengui... elephant in the room If you read the above paragraph, it might not come as a major surprise to you, but we are proud to announce that we will add an Open GL implementation and support for running your EaaS games on Linux with one of our next updates. For now, Linux support will be limited to the game launcher, and the Sandbox editor will still require Microsoft Windows. And of course, Linux support will be subject to the same developer-friendly terms as on Windows: Your monthly subscription fee will allow you to sell your games for Linux in addition to Windows, with no additional fees or royalties required.

While we can't pin an exact date on this update, we wanted to give you an early heads-up so you can start planning your Linux ports today!

Project CARS Livery Pack Released; AMD Optimizations Coming

Project CARS tweets about the release of Community Livery Pack #1 for Project CARS, Slightly Mad Studios' just released racing game. Word is: "This first pack contains not only bold, creative designs and homages to iconic real-life liveries but also an accurate recreation of Deadmau5' livery for his BAC Mono..." Also, a post on the game's Steam Forums addresses concerns about performance on AMD-based systems. The post offers Slightly Mad boss Ian Bell's take on driver issues, which sound like they are being addressed, based on a follow-up tweet from AMD (thanks DSOGaming). Here's Ian's overview of the situation:

We've provided AMD with 20 keys for game testing as they work on the driver side.

But you only have to look at the lesser hardware in the consoles to see how optimised we are on AMD based chips.

What can I say but he should take better stock of what's happening in his company. We're reaching out to AMD with all of our efforts. We've provided them 20 keys as I say. They were invited to work with us for years.

Looking through company mails the last I can see they (AMD) talked to us was October of last year.

Categorically, Nvidia have not paid us a penny. They have though been very forthcoming with support and co-marketing work at their instigation.

We've had emails back and forth with them yesterday also. I reiterate that this is mainly a driver issue but we'll obviously do anything we can from our side.

  • Dark Dawn - Steam Greenlight. "Dark Dawn is a 2d Action Side scroller, in which you can explore over 10 unique locations, fight countless mutants that have enslaved mankind. Along the way you will unlock and upgrade powerful weapons and passive abilities to help you in your journey."

Op Ed

GamesIndustry.biz - A red Flag for Greenlight.
If that were true, though, why does Greenlight exist at all? What is Greenlight, after all, if not a holding pen designed to keep the vast tsunami of games - many if not most of them absolutely terrible - off the hallowed Steam service itself? If Valve truly believes in openness, in the intelligence of crowds mediated through the mechanisms of markets, then why doesn't it just let everyone release whatever they want on Steam, subject to rudimentary technical checks to make sure they're not actually distributing viruses or malware? In fact, that's Valve's stated long-term goal; an open Steam, with Greenlight gone and new games pouring onto the platform constantly, to sink or swim according to the pure will of the market.

Out of the Blue

Happy birthday WalterEgo, as it was on this day that my little brother came into the world some undetermined number of years ago. This well-wishing is emblematic of why we have email spam. I just managed to save $2.00-$5.00 on a card and forty-something cents (who keeps track?) on postage to wish him a happy birthday, and all it required was blasting thousands of other people with the message.
