Archived News:
Danish game developer Full Control has suffered considerable layoffs, and the
Space Hulk: Ascension is ceasing game development, with
Nordicgame.com reporting that the loss of an investor and lack of funding
are at the root of the move. "After releasing ten games with considerable
critical and commercial success, we’ve made the difficult decision that the
release of Space Hulk: Ascension will be our last one," explains Full Control
founder and CEO Thomas Hentschel Lund. "We simply wanted to stop when we were at
the top of our game." Thanks

The
Grimrock website announces the release of Legend of Grimrock 2 for OS
X, saying the RPG sequel is on sale everywhere for 40% off to celebrate. Here's
word: The Mac version naturally ships with the latest version of the
Grimrock engine, and we are also launching a patch today for the Windows version
of the game which improves performance and input latency, and fixes a few bugs
in the main campaign. Modders of Grimrock 2 should be happy to know that the new
modding capabilities coded during the latest
Gloegg session
in February are also included in this build. The latest version of the game
is currently 2.2.4, and you can find the full changelog below.
The game should automatically update for you if you have the game already
purchased through Steam (you may need to restart the Steam client). If you are a
customer of GOG or our store, you can either redownload the game or install the
following patch:
version
2.1.18 to 2.2.4. The patch also works with GOG installations but there is a
slight kink. When a dialog appears saying that an existing installation can not
be found and the patcher asks “Abort Installation?”, select No. You have to then
navigate to the installation location of your GOG version of Legend of Grimrock
2.

The

A GameSlice podcast (AOL no
longer required) features Valve's Gabe Newell and Erik Johnson chatting with
Geoff Keighley about various topics. Those of you who remember your parents
talking about Half-Life may be interested in the discussion of the series
that's reported
on IGN (thanks nin), where they note Gabe Newell saying "I get it," when it
comes to user frustrations at their refusal to conclude the series, adding: "I
certainly understand why people are like, 'hey, I remember this awesome
experience, and I'm starting to get worried that I'm never going to get to have
it again'." The sanguine conclusion he draws after that suggests either they
will actually remedy this situation, or that he doesn't get it at all, as he
says: "So we understand it and we feel that, and we think at the end of the day,
customers are going to be really happy with where we spent our time and how
we've turned that into entertainment for them." Whatever it is he does get about
this, his comments don't suggest we're going to get a new Half-Life game anytime
soon, though this overview suggests that if this does happen, multiplayer will
no longer be an afterthought: But we are also going to build on what we
learned, and we have learned a lot. We aren’t going to go all retro because
there are too many interesting things that have been learned. The only reason we
would go back and do like a ‘super classic’ kind of product is if a whole bunch
of people internally at Valve said they wanted to do it, and had a reasonable
explanation for why it was. But, you know, if you wanted to do another Half-Life
game and you want to ignore everything we have learned in shipping Portal 2, and
in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad
choice. So we will keep moving forward but that doesn’t necessarily always mean
what people are worried that it might mean."
The Steam
Subscriber Agreement now reflects the recent legal decision in the European
Union forcing Valve to offer a refund policy for Steam games. As of now, Steam
users in Europe have 14 days to return games (thanks
MCV). A
post on Reddit does note, however, that this is a little tricky, as it
sounds like part of the checkout process asks for prior consent to waive this
right to finalize your purchase, so it sounds like actually playing a game ends
the ability to return it. Update: According to
IncGamers, this policy actually took effect last summer, and was only
noticed now because of wording changes, which includes the addition of the
language about waiving that 14 day period. They point to
this comparison between the
new EULA and the old one to illustrate the point. Here's the policy in eye-searing capital letters:

Slitherine announces an April 16th release date for Brother against Brother:
The Drawing of the Sword, a new wargame based on the American Civil War in
development at Western Civilization Software. "It’s always a pleasure to work
with the team at Western Civilization Software, but I believe this release is
truly special," says Erik Rutins, Director of Product Development at Matrix
Games. "For Civil War computer wargame fans, I believe that the incredible
research and great gameplay included in Brother against Brother will make this
game the definitive treatment of these battles for years to come." There are
screenshots and further details on
the game's product section, and here's a bit on what to expect: In
Brother against Brother: The Drawing of the Sword, the focus is on the opening
battles of the American Civil War. Players will be able to command both sides
and relive the major encounters of 1861 and early 1862. Thanks to extensive
historical and topographical research, including in-person examinations of each
battlefield and consultations of materials previously unavailable to
game-designers, the maps and orders of battle each have been recreated at an
unprecedented scale and level of detail.
Connoisseurs of the period will immediately notice that the behavior of the
commanders and their soldiers perfectly matches the tactics of this era!
However, Brother against Brother is much more than a rigorous simulation, it
also offers several what-if scenarios for a very refreshing approach to famous
battles such as 1st Manassas or Wilson’s Creek.
Steam News announces the
release of Metamorphosis,
the fourth and final episode for Resident Evil Revelations 2, which
includes the two bonus episodes
mentioned
last night. In a bit of related news,
CapCom Unity announces the launch of
residentevil.net multiplayer
support, saying events in the survival/horror sequel will kick off next month.
Here's word: When you turn on Revs 2 today, you'll be prompted to sync
accounts (or create accounts) for residentevil.net. Once you do, you can track
all kinds of player data for both story and Raid Mode, plus use RE points to
transfer items from the site into your game!
While online events won't begin until April, you can already log in and use some
of your RE points to unlock and transfer Custom Parts!
If you're already a Capcom Unity member, you can use that account to log in and
then synch up a Gamertag / PSN ID / Steam ID.
I commented on Groundhog Day(s) that there seemed to be a dispute over whether
(weather?) shadows were actually seen, making the omen hard to interpret. Now,
well over six weeks later, the wintery weather lingers in this area, so the
shadow confusion may be because there is no option for the groundhog to predict
*more* than six additional weeks of winter. Apparently what's going on here
right now is a
byproduct of some insane windiness we've been getting in this area, as the
scattered snowflakes we're seeing today are said to be lake effect snow from Lake
Ontario, which is not exactly what is considered a local waterway around here.
