Archived News:
Developer Slightly Mad Studios and publisher BANDAI NAMCO announce another delay
for Project CARS, saying they've shifted the racing game's release to
mid-May 2015. Here's the official statement on the setback: "Despite our
long heritage and pedigree in making critically-acclaimed racing games, Project
CARS is by far the grandest and most intricately detailed of them all. Despite
therefore the game being 99.9% complete, the remaining 0.1% attending to small
issues and bugs has been tricky to anticipate. We’re absolutely dedicated to
delivering a ground-breaking experience and by targeting mid-May fans can be
assured that’s what they’ll receive," said Ian Bell, Head of Studio at Slightly
Mad Studios . "Again, we want to thank our fans for their support and patience
on this matter. There’s a high expectancy from racing fans around the world that
Project CARS is going to be an exciting new contender in the simulation racing
space and we firmly believe gamers deserve it to be in its most complete and
polished state when they come to play it on day one. And since the gaming
community is our primary focus and has always been at the heart of the project
during development, we would like to offer some free content to all players as
compensation for this short delay and as acknowledgement of how grateful we are.
This gift, that we’re sure is going to excite fans, will be available from day
one and revealed shortly. Keep an eye on our website for more info."
A Kickstarter is now underway for Seven Dragon Saga, the upcoming RPG
from Tactical Simulations Interactive (TSI), the developer formed by developers
of the classic SSI "gold box" RPGs. Their initial goal is $450,000, but they
have not posted stretch goals at this time. They also offer a release window,
saying the game will come to Windows, OS X, and Linux next year. Here's an
announcement accompanying the launch of the campaign: The glory days of
"Gold Box" fantasy role-playing games are about to make a huge comeback, as
Tactical Simulations Interactive (TSI) has today announced a release date for
"Seven Dragon Saga" for PC, Mac and Linux. The TSI team is comprised of veteran
developers and alumni from Strategic Simulations Interactive (SSI) who worked on
fantasy RPG classics including "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance",
"AD&D Curse of the Azure Bonds" and "Wizards Crown."
Seven Dragon Saga is a classically styled RPG based upon an original pen and
paper role-playing system designed by Strategic Simulations Interactive (SSI)
alumni Keith Brors and David Shelley.
Self-funded for most of its development, Seven Dragon Saga has
launched on Kickstarter today to fund the final round of production. The
Kickstarter can
be found here. Backer rewards include special items such as DRM-free copies
of Seven Dragon Saga, Code Wheels to assist players in solving puzzles in-game,
Journals containing more info about the game world and copies of the pen 'n

The Magic Circle is an upcoming game where you play as a character in a
video game that may not be released. This imaginative and meta concept is
reflected by The Magic Circle website,
which at first appears to promote the vaporware title from within the actual
game. This does have clues that more is going on, including a not very hidden link to an Easter egg
page which includes this trailer. There's
also a video interview with the developers
on Kotaku. Thanks Nick.

This page has
instructions on how to register for an open beta test for Rustbucket Rumble
that will kick off on Steam on Monday. Here's a description of the game's
three-on-three battles: Rustbuckle Rumble is a 2D, arcade-y, team-based
shooter. Inspiration for the mechanics was taken from classic run and gun games
mixed with more modern, class-based, multiplayer shooters. It’s capture-the-flag
where the players are the flags.
Games are fast as you battle your opponents, stun them, and then return them to
your base, recycling them for parts before the other team can stop you. Your
base uses the robot parts to create a giant robot super weapon that is unleashed
to destroy the enemy’s base. Each game ends with an epic giant robot
battle.

Australia is experimenting with participating in using the
International Age Rating Coalition
to rate video games to ease the burden of classifying all the games being
released these days. The scope of games released in the territory increased a
bit after AU adopted a new new A18+
rating, but there were still refusals to classify some games for release but
it's not clear whether use of this self-reporting system will result in the
release of games previously not allowed for sale in the territory. Here's word
on the year-long trial from
Kotaku Australia: The International Age Ratings Coalition (IARC) is a
globally unified age ratings classification system and Australia is now part of
that coalition, meaning digital and mobile games can now be classifified using
this system, as opposed to going through the traditional process with the
Classification Board. Developers obtain ratings by answering a short
questionnaire about the content of their video game. The system then outputs an
age rating based on the country and that country’s specific social norms. 36
countries are now part of the IARC and Australia is the latest to join.
A trial period will begin next month, and will initially be overseen by the
Classification Board.
“After close collaboration between the IARC and my Department over many months
to ensure the tool meets Australia’s requirements, I have approved the IARC
classification tool for an initial 12-month trial period to begin next month,”
said Michael Keenan.

The
Terraria Community Forums follow up on showing off Terraria: Otherworld
at
GDC with new details about the sandbox survival sequel (thanks
VG247). The update includes
their GDC trailer
as well as details on the game's strategic side, saying this will include
elements of the tower defense genre. Here's word: Strategy Elements:
- The main objective of the game is not simply to
explore, gather, build (although the player is still free to do this – we
want to stress the fact that though this is a more structured approach, we
are absolutely trying to retain as much player freedom as possible) - but
rather to return the world to its pristine form.
- The player achieves this goal by pushing back the
Corruption until it is no more. Your primary method towards achieving this
goal will be finding/crafting and then activating Purifying Towers. These
machines of ancient design will push back anything unnatural in the world.
- Not content to simply allow the player to purify
the land, the vile force behind the world’s corruption fights back. The
resonance from the crystals in the purifying tower attracts enemies, driving
them to destroy the towers and re-corrupt the player’s hard-won terrain.
- The Purifying Towers need to be defended and even
the best players would not be able to cover and defend the entire map at
once (nor does that sound all that much fun)- so Terraria: Otherworld
introduces another strategic element: Tower Defense. Through the use of
customizable Wartowers – and any other clever defensive approaches - the
player can ward off the advances of the evil forces without having to be
physically present.
- These Wartowers can have a wide range of different
weapons and defenses but are not self-powered. They need to be built in the
vicinity of a Purifying Tower to get power from the Crystal.

bosses will fight like in bullet hell games."

In an unusually timely manner, I followed up on yesterday's talk of sheering the
Gunnar-man's winter coat, and he is set for warmer weather. It's always a shock
to see this transition, as yesterday he had a three inch layer of hair in every
direction which has now been all but shaved off. He's a compact standard poodle,
and weighs a solid 60 pounds, but if you had to guess yesterday, you'd have
probably thought he was 100 lbs, while if you were asked to guess today, you
might think he was more like 30 lbs.
