Steam News announces the
release of Grow Home,
the experiential climbing game from Ubisoft Reflections. Here's
a launch trailer and
word from UbiBlog: From
a seed of an idea to innovative new game, Grow Home is now available for
download. As BUD (Botanical Utility Droid) you will grab, pull, jump and climb
your way to the stars. Explore the strange open world and propel yourself to new
heights, discovering strange floating islands as you make your way to your ship.
Grow the massive Star Plant so you can reach your ship and bring this new plant
species back to your home planet. Download Grow Home now on Steam for $7.99.
Grab a gamepad and use the trigger buttons to control both of BUD’s arms
separately as you climb your way through the sky on the Star Plant. Climb onto
the branching Star Shoots and control their growth to create a new path toward
one of the many floating islands. Make sure to watch your grip on the plant;
it’s a long way down. Luckily for you, you’ve got a handy flower parachute to
help you soften your fall. You’ll also be able to access teleportation pads to
make your journey a bit easier.
Grow Home comes from a team of eight people within Ubisoft Reflections. Though
it started as an experimental tool exploring procedural animation, the team saw
a personality and charm in this little tool that inspired them to turn it into
something more. “We created the opportunity for us to experiment on a smaller
scale,” says Producer Pete Young. “We had some very challenging restraints and
our ultimate goal was to create something new and completely different.” Continue here to read the full story.

Activision announces the Xbox exclusivity for the Havoc DLC for Call of Duty:
Advanced Warfare ends in just over three weeks, which is presumably when stores
everywhere will have run through all the extra Xbox One systems the exclusive
will sell. The add-on will come to Windows, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 on
February 26th, offering new missions, new weapons, and new versions of the same
old zombies. Here's word: Havoc, first DLC pack for Call of Duty®:
Advanced Warfare (2014's top-selling console video game in the world, according
to the NPD Group and Gfk based on physical game unit sell-through), is coming to
PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 26. Packed to the brim with
content, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Havoc includes four new, epic
multiplayer maps, access to the versatile AE4 directed energy assault rifle, the
AE4 Widowmaker custom variant, plus an exciting all-new cooperative mode called
Exo Zombies.
Havoc's four new, exotic and diverse multiplayer maps are set around the globe
and are tailor-made for players to unleash their exoskeleton's abilities:
- Core: Deploy to the Gobi desert
where the ravaged ruins of a nuclear fusion plant set the stage for a
high-octane warzone. Take down enemies through the wreckage in long-range
combat or get up-close and personal in the tunnels surrounding the central
turbine. Activate decontamination drones using the map-based scorestreak to
help clean out the competition.
- Urban: Prepare yourself for brutal,
high-speed combat in Dallas Ward 3, a future mega structure, funneling
players into a close-quarters free-for-all. This modular compound's
verticality unleashes the exoskeleton's capabilities. Stay focused during
the timed event as blast doors alter the map's flow and sightlines.
- Sideshow: In the shadow of Devil's
Tower, Wyoming, this abandoned inn's open layout amplifies its creep factor.
Blast your way through the clown inn with close-quarters battles or use
long-range site-lines from the mining facilities and natural terrain. Use
the map-based scorestreak to activate the lights, music, and magic of the
clown marquee and rain down a barrage of rainbow smoke-trailed cannonballs.
- Drift: An idyllic ski resort high in
the Rocky Mountains is transformed into a festive high-altitude playground,
perfect for an all-out firefight. Make your way to the highly contested over
watch in the glass observation deck or take a ride on the carousel to
deliver 360 degrees of carnage. Players can use the map-altering timed event
to their advantage as an avalanche of snow and debris disorients players,
intensifying the battle.
Crispon Games is a new independent studio formed by former Paradox Interactive
designer Chris King and programmer Pontus Åberg, who announce development of
Galactic Inheritors, a 4X space strategy game which will launch on Steam
early access next week. There are some screenshots on the
Crispon Games website, and
here's a trailer.
"When I left Paradox Interactive, I set out to create the game I always dreamed
of making," said lead designer Chris King. "We would sit around, talking about
turning certain game ideas into actual games, but some never made it past the
idea stage. I very much enjoyed my time at Paradox and am proud of the great
games we made there. However, I deeply felt Galactic Inheritors is a game I
needed to make, and make outside the constraints of a bigger studio. I knew I
would deeply regret not taking the chance to make it happen." Here's
more: Galactic Inheritors returns to the roots of classic 4X games, taking
the genre to a bold new frontier that offers a strong science fiction mythos
grounded in reality, with deep strategy gameplay aimed at hardcore gamers.
Players will explore a vast and diverse galaxy as leader of a budding galactic
empire, eager to expand their influence and exterminate those that would oppose
them. Continue here to read the full story.
Daedalic Entertainment announces a release date for Dead Synchronicity:
Tomorrow Comes Today, though in spite of its title, the Kickstarted
dystopian adventure game does not come today, but rather will land on Windows, OS X, and Linux via Steam on April 10th. They offer
these
screenshots, and the following description: In Dead Synchronicity,
you play as Michael, a man with no past, who must recover his identity and
decode the two events that brought the world to the edge of collapse: the
so-called Great Wave, an inexplicable chain of natural disasters, and a pandemic
that turned humans into the “Dissolved”, infected beings whose sick bodies will
eventually dissolve into blood. However, before they die their gruesome death,
the Dissolved gain special cognitive powers. If Michael doesn’t hurry, he won’t
be able to avoid the impending moment of “dead synchronicity”, when Time itself
starts to dissolve.
Developer Brucefilm announces that Stay Dead Evolution is now available
on Steam for Windows and
OS X, offering a fighting game with literally photorealistic graphics, thanks to
its use of real-life video footage. The
game's website offers
details on this "action B movie experience along with a playable demo and a
trailer that gives the impression that this is like a series of QuickTime
Events.

A
new Kickstarter is underway, looking to raise at least $600,000 to develop
Underworld Ascendant, a new game following in the footsteps of Ultima
Underworld. This proposal comes from OtherSide Entertainment, a new developer
composed of veterans of Looking Glass Studios, developers of the original 1992
role-playing game and its 1993 sequel. There are details on the project and a
Kickstarter video with
a look at the new game and the original featuring Paul Neurath and Tim Stellmach
of OtherSide, as well as RPG legend Richard "Lord British" Garriott. If you are
interested in this, they are holding a
reddit AMA at noon EST today and will be live streaming
on Twitch at 4:00 pm EST. Here's a bit on
the plan: Far more than a dungeon crawl, Underworld Ascendant is a
next-generation sequel to the legendary fantasy RPG's Ultima Underworld & Ultima
Underworld 2. It not only modernizes the series' visuals and user interface to
take full advantage of the today's powerful PC's, it innovates in bold new ways.
Here's how:
THE UNDERWORLD AS A CHARACTER
No other game has such a vivid imagining of an underground fantasy realm as
Underworld Ascendant. The Stygian Abyss is a vast world unto itself…
- Plunder ancient temples, navigate subterranean
rivers, gaze in wonder at the masterwork of jade dwarven halls, scale
plunging ice caverns, trek through enchanted forests of giant mushrooms,
dare shadowy tombs of the undead, and much more.
- Alive with bustling underground societies:
enclaves of human renegades scavenging for survival, villages of the
mysterious shambler 'mushroom people' performing arcane rituals, dwarven
factories producing the finest arms and armor.
- Face monstrous creatures like the ripper, a
vicious, ambulatory plant whose bark is prized by The Stygian Abyss'
intelligent races; stay clear of mass migrations of ravenous rotworms; dodge
the giant spider's sticky webs it casts through the air.
- Alter the environment to your advantage. Flood an
arid plain to help the damp-loving shamblers expand their territory, gaining
their favor.Changes you make can ripple across the game's reactive,
ever-changing ecology, producing startlingly unpredictable results.
The Stygian Abyss makes the typical fantasy game's above-ground assortment of
medieval towns and wilderness seem stale by comparison.
A DYNAMIC, PLAYER-DRIVEN NARRATIVE
Get drawn into an epic story with ties to the original Ultima Underworld games.
Play as The Avatar, a human newly arrived from our earth through a mystical Rune
Gate. As a "stranger in a strange land" you will…
- Meet shrewd characters, with their own motivations
and agendas. Some may be swayed to your cause, while others may manipulate
you.
- Encounter rugged dwarf frontiersmen, fierce dark
elf renegades, and strangely alien shamblers. Each faction holds a valid
claim to The Stygian Abyss. Which side will you join? Will you unite, or
destroy?
- Entangle yourself in a tale of intrigue and
conflict as three fierce, rival factions struggle for control. Your choices
will determine the ultimate fate of The Stygian Abyss.

The
Game Developers Conference 2015 Scheduler shows a session to be presented by
Valve at next month's GDC on "The Future of High Performance Graphics," which
will include members of the Frostbite engine team, Epic Games, Oxide Games, and
Unity (thanks
PC Gamer). With Valve focused on the ability to offer games
independent of Windows, getting
better control over the graphics API seems a next logical step following the
launch of SteamOS, and the description of the session suggests that's what this
is about: Join us for the unveiling of Khronos' glNext initiative, the
upcoming cross-platform graphics API designed for modern programming techniques
and processors. glNext will be the singular choice for developers who demand
peak performance in their applications. We will present a technical breakdown of
the API, advanced techniques and live demos of real-world applications running
on glNext drivers and hardware.
Iceberg Interactive announces they will publish CERES, a tactical
space combat game from Jötunn Games they say will be released next quarter via digital
distribution as well as in a boxed retail version in some territories. The
CERES website has more details,
screenshots, and a
trailer from last year. Here's the announcement: Renowned for its prestige collection of space games, publisher Iceberg
Interactive announces it has signed yet another promising title, tactical space
combat game Ceres (PC) from Iceland-based developer Jötunn Games. The game is
set for a Q2-2015 release on digital platforms and boxed in retail stores.
In a world where humans, monsters and machine-gods fight for survival, you
play the role of a young adventurer, who just got his hands on his first
spaceship, and is determined to make a name for himself. Build up a squadron,
fight in space against pirates, warships, mythical monsters. Negotiate, trade,
loot everything you can get your hands on and ultimately find out the reasons
behind what happened to planet Earth - that is, IF you survive, for the universe
turns out to be a very hazardous place.
Iceberg Interactive CEO Erik Schreuder says: ”Over the past year, Ceres has
already garnered a strong reputation on IndieDB, and with our guidance and
sci-fi games expertise added to the mix, we are confident we will take this
indie gem to the next level and aim to exceed gamers’ expectations! If you like
sci-fi games this should definitely be on your radar for mid-2015.”
Jötunn Games CEO Tryggvi Hákonarson says: "This game has been in the works on
and off for about four years now and has changed quite a lot since its humble
beginnings as a Homeworld clone. It’s been a struggle but a fun struggle
nonetheless and receiving positive feedback from the community has been very
encouraging so far. If you’re into rather hectic space combat with lots to
micromanage, then this game is for you." Continue here to read the full story.
Publisher Phoenix Online Publishing and developer No Bull Intentions announce
the release of Supreme League of Patriots for Windows, OS X, and Linux, with the
game's three episodes available individually, or as a season pass.
This page has links to where
this can be purchased, along with
a launch trailer, and
some details. Here's word: Poking fun at pop culture, politics, reality TV
and more, Supreme League of Patriots combines classic point-and-click gameplay
with the satirical and irreverent sense of humor found in Family Guy and South
Park. Join Kyle Keever in his politically incorrect quest to win a spot on the
newest hit reality TV show, America's Got Superpowers. When a freak accident
turns Kyle's alter-ego, the Purple Patriot, into his main ego and triggers real
superpowers at the cost of his sanity (and good taste), Kyle's got a new mission
to become the hero New York deserves, and definitely not the one it wants.
Navigating a twisted world of vigilantes and villains with his cheeky and
sarcastic sidekick Mel, Kyle's got a lot to learn about the world of
superheroes! Continue here to read the full story.
Happy Groundhog Day! No wait, that's not right, is it? Anyway, I had fun as
always with our annual Groundhog Day celebration, thanks for your indulgence as
we all got in touch with our inner Ned Ryerson.
I just saw a promo where Papa John's congratulated the Patriots on winning the
Super Bowl. I looked for it online, which is the first I saw that they actually
accidentally aired the wrong ad at one point, congratulating Seahawks on
winning, which is pretty hilarious. It was a little more obscure, but I did
eventually find the proper
promo. The reason I was seeking that was to ponder how Peyton Manning feels
about running a spot congratulating Tom Brady, since Manning
owns 21 franchises in the chain. I'm imagining he's not ecstatic about that,
even if it does help sell pizzas.
