UbiBlog announces Grow
Home, "a quirky, experiential climbing game" developed by Ubisoft Reflections,
and coming to Windows PCs via Steam on February 4th. Here's a
teaser trailer, and
since the blog post is quite expansive, here's word from a separate announcement
that's a little more concise: Today, Ubisoft announced Grow Home, a
quirky, experiential climbing game in development at Reflections, a Ubisoft
studio based in Newcastle, UK. Grow Home will be available for download via
Steam for Windows® PC on February 4, 2015.
In Grow Home, players are free to explore the strange, open world full of
floating islands, majestic caves and waterfalls, all set in a beautiful and
minimalist artistic style. Players take on the role of BUD (Botanical Utility
Droid), an excitable, child-like robot sent on a mission to search the galaxy
for a new species of plant that can oxygenate his home world. By growing and
directing the giant Star Plant into a towering organic sculpture, players will
reshape the planet and create a magnificent landscape that lets them climb to
new heights. The game’s unique climbing controls and abilities challenge players
to continually reach for higher ground, but one wrong move and it’s a long way
down.
“Whether it’s BUD’s charming, procedurally-generated animation, the awesome
structure of the Star Plant players create or the beautiful landscapes, there is
a peaceful, innocent vibe about Grow Home that makes the game utterly unique,”
says Pete Young, producer, Reflections, a Ubisoft studio.
Started as an experiment within the Reflections studio by a small team of eight
talented developers, Grow Home offers the opportunity to discover a singular
open-world based on two main pillars: Climbing and Exploration.
Climbing: The world of Grow Home is built for vertical exploration and the
unique climbing mechanic brings unprecedented freedom. Players control BUD’s
hands independently to grab onto any surface, scaling the giant Star Plant as it
grows and expands.
Exploration: There are no set paths in Grow Home. Players are free to explore
the many micro islands and hidden caves in this fun and beautiful open world.
Every island encountered is scattered with hidden crystals to power the players’
journey and expand their abilities. Continue here to read the full story.
The
Telltale blog announces a February 3rd release date for episode two of Game
of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series. They celebrate the news with a
new trailer. Word
is: "House Forrester is in disarray. Their liege lord and his heir are dead, and
Ironrath is occupied by Whitehill soldiers. The survival of the family depends
upon those who are left. Placed at King’s Landing, the epicenter of intrigue,
Mira Forrester must weigh her loyalty to Margaery Tyrell against the needs of
her family, while choosing how to play the political games of Tyrion Lannister.
One misstep could spell doom for Mira and her entire family. To the far north,
Gared Tuttle finds that the wall and its crows hold little love for a squire
from the Wolfswood, but finds kinship in the bastard son of Ned Stark. Gared
must prove worthy of becoming a ranger in order to carry out the mission given
him; one that is vital to the future of those he serves. To the east, Asher
Forrester, the exiled son, is called back to Westeros to aid his family, but how
can one man help when the Boltons rule the north with an iron fist? Meanwhile,
an unexpected source of hope returns to the Forresters, but Ironrath is no place
for the weak." Continue here to read the full story.

Void Destroyer is now available
on the
Humble Store and Steam,
after a
successful Kickstarter and about a year of Steam early access. This
single-developer project includes RTS and FPS gameplay, putting the player in
the role of both pilot and commander.
This new trailer
offers a look at gameplay, and here's word: The seat of a fighter, the
bridge of a cruiser and a tactical battle map are your tools of war. Void
Destroyer puts you in command and gives you ultimate freedom over the your
forces and the art of war.
If you ever wanted to directly control your forces in a real time strategy game
or be able to build ships and command to your wing-men and fleets in a space
combat simulator like you can in a RTS - this is the game for you. Void
Destroyer combines elements from space combat simulators and real time strategy
games. No longer are you limited on how to control and command. Battles are
waged on your terms, you are given the tools. How you use them is up to you.
Jump into a fighter to engage in dogfights, then switch into a frigate to take
out an enemy corvette. Build defensive platforms to augment the security of your
base. Issue commands to your attack ships to distract enemy defenders to allow
your marine frigates to board an enemy's base. Defend and oversee asteroid
mining craft to have the resources necessary to support your fleets.
By combining elements of two genres, enemies can be more brutal, fights can be
larger and you can overcome greater challenges.
Think there's not enough time? Use time dilation (slow down time) to make time
for tactics. Continue here to read the full story.
Steam now offers early
access to Breach & Clear: Deadline, the zombie-infested follow-up to the
top-down tactical action in the
original Breach & Clear. A look at the game can be found in
an early
access announcement trailer, and attendees of this weekends Penny Arcade
Expo South can play it in the Gambitious and Devolver booth. A full launch is
planned this spring, and in the meantime, here's word on early access: Breach
& Clear: Deadline drops players into urban decay as an infection is quickly
engulfing the city. As the leader of an elite tactical squad, you must find the
source of the infection and stop it before it gets out of hand. Lead your team
into a massive, complex inner-city, strategize on the fly against the hordes
you'll encounter and try to stay alive using creative combinations of what
resources you have.
Released last summer in early alpha form to select testers, developers have
implemented a plethora of player feedback into the Early Access version,
including daily leaderboards for competitive players, massive additions to the
open world areas, new enemies, and dozens of side quests allowing you to level
up, gain experience, and a variety of new weapons. Continue here to read the full story.

Chris Roberts gave a BAFTA Masterclass presentation last night, talking with an
audience of film and games professionals about the crowdfunding success of
Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium's upcoming space combat game. The talk is
recapped in detail on Polygon, where they quote him envisioning the game's
fundraising topping out at about $100 million, almost 50% more than its
current total,
which stands at just under $70 million. But he also actually says this is not
about the money. "We're now close to $70 million, and it's likely the carry-on
will probably be over $100 by the time the game is close to public release. But
the crowdfunding isn't really about the money," Roberts explains. "Yes, the
money is nice. Yes the money enables you to do some of these things you do, but
it's really about bringing people in to create this community and have them sort
of share that experience with you as you're building it." The talk also included
an outline of release plans going forward, here are the bullet points from
a presentation slide, and a bit more of Polygon's write-up of the proceedings:
THE LAST STAGE: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
- Spring 2015
- Beta Release of FPS
- Planetside/Social beta
- Summer 2015

The beta for the Star Citizen FPS will release in Spring 2015, along with the
beta of the "planetside" product. Then, that same summer, the Arena Commander
product will be upgraded to a 2.0 version, complete with ships that allow for
multiplayer crews. Then, in the fall, the first episode of Squadron 42 will be
released. By the end of 2015 backers can expect to play the alpha of the
persistent universe, leading up to an eventual 2016 commercial launch of the
game.

Daedalic Entertainment announces AER., a third-person exploration game in
the works at Swedish developer Forgotten Key for release on Windows, Linux, OS
X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One next year.
a first batch
of screenshots showing the game's stylized graphics, and the announcement
has these initial details: AER puts players in the shoes of Auk, a pilgrim
girl, to explore an unbelievable open world beneath her feet and wings. Wings?
Yes, indeed! Auk has a rare gift: She can turn into a bird and is one of the few
people who can reach even the most remote places in her homeland of flying
islands, in search for the “Memories of the Past”. On her journey she encounters
other shape shifters, visits the ruins of the old gods and has to face dark
creatures to revive the world of AER from menacing shadows.
In a genre mix between action adventure and flight exploration, players will
join Auk on her pilgrimage. The surreal style of AER will be accompanied by
reduced but colorful low poly graphics that underline the quiet tone of the game
in a fitting way.
Digital Extremes announces
the launch of Wyrmius, a 2D side-scrolling game playable within Warframe,
the free-to-play third-person shooter.
This video shows
this off in an homage to old-school commercials. Word is: "Use Wyrm’s signature
laser rifle to blast through increasingly challenging enemies in this
Sentinel-based space shooter. To play, visit your Arsenal and Equip Wyrm. Visit
‘Appearance’ and select the ‘W’ loadout at the top of the screen. Could it be
any simpler? Yes, yes it could be but it’s not." Continue here to read the full story.
So they've settled on
DeflateGate?
Really? I'm ready to go with the "gate" suffix equaling scandal, but there were
better ways to go here. PSIGate would be awesome because it also recalls SpyGate,
but I would have just gone with BallGate, since it can also refer to the balls
it takes to do this, and the initial attempts to laugh it off.
